It's safe to say that not everyone is entirely sold on Final Fantasy XV's battle system just yet - including ourselves - but the hope is that once you have access to various powerful spells and sword combos, combat will become increasingly enjoyable.
Giving us a glimpse of what battles will be like at higher levels, IGN's posted a video that shows off a load of new gameplay, and we've embedded it below. We get to see new monsters, new attacks, and a lot of flashy effects - but does it really look all that great?
Again, we're not totally convinced. From what we can tell based on the short clip, the camera still seems unruly to say the least - especially when you get close to your opponents - and we're really not sure that we like the idea of throwing magic spells like grenades. It's all a bit... Clunky.
That said, there are definitely some good points. The monster designs, for example, are fantastic, and despite our concerns, we're especially fond of the fast paced action. Of course, it's still too early to tell whether or not Final Fantasy XV's battle system will hit the mark, but after having spent hours upon hours exploring its basic workings in demos and analysing its mechanics in gameplay footage, we'll be going into the full release with some scepticism. Naturally, we're hoping that our worries are unfounded.
What are your thoughts on the game's combat? Are you eager to play it for yourself, or are you similarly unconvinced? Summon a bunch of swords in the comments section below.

From what I've played of it, Final Fantasy XV's battle system is pretty lame. It's far too pedestrian, and seems to devolve into just holding a button to block or a button to attack. Obviously the demos didn't give us all the tools, but from what I've seen and player, I'm not excited about this one.
Even after the patched demos I find the battle system to be a big hot mess. It's inexcusable for a game this long in development with the financial resources it has behind it to play so poorly.
From what I played of the demos, I feel like the combat is right on the cusp of being great. It has this reminiscent feel of Kingdom Hearts, so the simplicity at first didn't quite turn me away from it. It definitely still feels like its lacking the depth it should have for a game with 10 years dev time, resources and funding.
The demo felt more like the OP said, like Kingdom Heart's, I don't see this as a positive to me it's a huge negative I didn't even bother finishing the demo I don't really care if I get Carbuncle or not it was lame. Will still buy it though...lol.
I completed the demo on both PS4 and Xbox One (quite similar, in between). I didn't like the demo: bad frame rate (all the time), jerky controls (at least controlling the beasts) and bland combat. I really wanted to like it, but I don't. They could fix the game and delay it (...after 10 years).
I don't understand why Square Enix would take Western elements that don't improve the formula at all.
I like the warping mechanic a lot. I haven't mastered the blocking and all that but I like the premise- just need to master the execution.
I've played ff 15 demo from ff type 0 and the combat just feel slow and clunky, I'm more interested in kingdom hearts 3 and persona 5 for my rpg fix. I hope ff 15 will be a good game.
This video is weird. It makes the combat look rubbish to a degree that I struggle to believe is representative of the product. Will wait until I play it.
This game is gonna disappoint A LOT of people
I thought the episode duscae combat was pretty good. It was a little unruly, and did get repetitive, but I still enjoyed it for the most part. I hated the changes made for platinum demo and didn't really enjoy the demo too much
Having just watched the vid I have no idea what the combat is like. I didn't see a menu, so it isn't menu based, nor probably turn based, and no QTE pop ups, which makes me incredibly happy as I hate those, so I know what it isn't, but I have no idea what it is. It certainly didn't look slow or clunky to me though, looked faster than GoW, about the same as DmC or Bayonetta, so that works for me. And the original KH combat was great, so anything like that and I'm good.
Of course I also have never had any idea how combat works in Witcher 3, only that nobody ever seems to like that combat either but everybody is always raving about how great the game is. I have a feeling I'll like this more than Witcher 3, whatever either of them are, as FFXV looks like a videogame, W3 looks like a PC game, and I never like those.
In a couple years this game is going to be remembered as the greatest failure in video game history since E.T. on Atari 2600. Worse than Duke Nukem Forever.
Sure it will have flashy graphics but as far as I can tell that's all it has going for it (and the FF name).
I dont think this game will get 8s and 9s...It might look gorgeous and has a wonderful open world, if the combat is as boring and a mess as its now, its going to hurt this game so bad.
It looks absolutely shocking. I just commented on the other thread re environments and mentioned the combat as I remembered it from the demos. This looks very very bad. Shame.
The game looks amazing and have pre ordered my copy of the game but yeah, the combat I felt when I played the demo was pretty much pants and very disappointing.I love the Tales games and their combat is far more fun, thought maybe this games combat would be the same..
The combat in the video doesant look like a big improvement..
I think the combat looks very cool, its the holding down the O button for the melee attacks during the Platinum Demo that I didnt like. I still want this game but I'm more excited for Persona 5, tbh.
@CloudNine Exactly how I felt. I would add that I LOVED the battles in Duscae, which puts me in the minority but whatevs. I have a feeling/hope that it will be the most rewarding if it forces you to mix and match weapons mid-combos to optimise strikes, which will make it a lot more interesting and tactical. Yes, you'll be able to hold the button to strike continuously with the same weapon but that will not get you far.
@finalstan If they give the option to switch everything during combat it would be a good thing. Zodiark white mask on, white mask off style for Holyja. But I bet they won't.
I'm also wondering how well this new battle system will actually play. All the reviews in the world really won't give me the first hand experience I'll need to make a judgment (just as you can't really hear how a song sounds from a review), so I've decided to just put FFXV on my Christmas wish list rather than gambling the $60+ away myself.
I'll spend my money on Persona 5 - which I should be done with just in time for this present!!! 😊
it looks great to me.I don't know what you guys are talking about.great combat.I'm hype
@playstation1995 Did you play the demo?
Whoa! I haven't read an FFXV article in a while, and it's good to see that I'm not the only one who thinks the combat system is "a mess" after playing the demos. Then again, it took me a little while to like (and then LOOOOVE) FFXIII's battle system, so I'm willing to give this game a chance (or at least play the demos a few more times).
?? Really guys?? I enjoyed so much the combat system, after the mess that was XIII, it was refreshing and fast paced.
the gameplay look good to me
Looks okay. Really liked Type-0's battles, lots of fun to play. Hopefully this is on par..
I thought that mini demo thing sucked, it didn't do anything for me at all.
That video kind of reminds me of the Doom gameplay video that Polygon put up of Arthur Gies being absolutely garbage at the game.
I think I'll wait until I get my hands on the full product before judging it.
I feel like demos might not do the game's combat justice. Or at least that's what I hope.
I tried to 'get' the combat in the Platinum demo specifically the end bit with grown Noctis but i just couldn't find the depth that people were raving about.
People probably think that because the combat looks cool, it's good. It isn't, it's clunky, monotonous and the only skill that's required is trying to balance the shoddy camera. All my opinion of course.
I'm still not sold on FFXV in general. Both demos werent very good and they seem to be hiding as much plotting as possible, which gives me the feeling of another FFXIII situation.
Those combat mechanics were very wonky.
Great to see I'm not the only one who thinks the combat is trash.
@sketchturner naw this game makes ET and Duke Nukem look like a masterpieces.
