So, Fallout 4 mods are supposed to be finally coming to PlayStation 4 this month, but as is all too often the case with Bethesda when it comes to working with Sony's consoles, things aren't quite as simple as they should be. Just recently, Bethesda released some notes on the incoming mod support, and was quick to outline some potential problems.
"PC textures are used. Memory and performance issues may occur. We are working with Sony on optimal texture exporting support in a future update," reads the first bullet point. "Sound files are currently not supported. PS4 sound format is a proprietary format. We are working with Sony on sound file processing support in a future update," reads the second. "PS4 Mod Storage limit is approximately 900 MB at present. Please do not upload mods larger than 900 MB. We are working with Sony to increase this limit," reads the third and final point.
Now, we don't know the technical ins and outs of modding - especially when it comes to bringing mods from PC to console - but what we do know is that it sounds like mods on PS4 are going to be stuck with several limitations. Mod support will go through a beta phase on PS4 very soon, which will hopefully iron out some of the issues - but let's not forget that Far Harbor had a beta on Sony's system, too, and that didn't turn out great, did it?
All things considered, we'll have to just wait and see how well mods function on PS4, but were you anticipating any of these problems? Try not to ruin your save data in the comments section below.

Please work I want to fight Macho Man deathclaws OH YEAH!
Oh surprise...Something Bethesda not working on Playstation! 😒
Will there be a mod to make it look like a PS4 game?
Love it. They're having problems on the superior system. I've got to wonder how much of this is Bethesda and how much is Sony.
@carlos82 Buuuuuurn!
@glassmusic Superior in power doesn't always mean that it is 'superior' or has the same freedom that other consoles have. Sony themselves are obviously partly to blame if they are the ones limiting Mods to 900MB when XB/PC may have more freedom. It seems that the way 'sound' works is also different on Sony's console and possibly the textures too it seems from this.
The Mods themselves are created by the PC community using a PC mod suite with the 'best' or most popular ons coming to console. The way they are created maybe different from the way the PS4 operates which may make porting these a bit a more difficult - especially as I said these are community made and not created by Bethesda themselves
Mods are a nice idea but I just think they work better on PC games where its easier to develop and more organic
Don't they disable trophies? If so I won't be using any.
@Splat As far as I know, yeah they do.
I just want mods to fix the little things Bethesda can't be bothered with. Like ballistic weave on one type of fedora but not another, or green shirt and combat boots but not flannel shirt and jeans. I also want ammo crafting like in New Vegas.
@BAMozzy But shouldn't they iron out these issues BEFORE launching mod support on PS4? What was the reason for the delay of mods on PS4 in the first place?
Oh well, pretty funny. I do hope we get the Baby Nuke mod and the green landscape mod.
@3Above It wasn't delayed it was just timed exclusivitie
Throthgar mod please
To be honest i never thought mods would come to the PS4. Maybe a few small mods,but not to the extent the xbone would get. Complete cancellation on PS4 i thought very possible with the reason that the mods could not be made to work well on PS4.
Game Shark and Code Breakers for PS4 would be nice.
@3Above The 'delay' was because Mods will come to Xbox first as stated at last years MS E3 briefing. When Mods were first announced, they were only announced for Xbox (in terms of consoles). After E3, they said they hoped to bring mods to PS4 afterwards but couldn't promise because of Sonys current structure/rule set - in other words they have had more freedom and support from MS to bring Mods to console than they have from Sony.
Bethesda seem to have so many problems with Sony consoles. Much more than anyone else. Maybe its because they are more high profile but im done with their RPG games. Apparently a leader in the genre until the Witcher 3 utterly blew it out of the water and Fallout 4 and its latest patch was released buggy, poorly optimised and lets be honest here, frankly dated.
Its a huge game ofcourse but it barely looks and plays any better than Oblivion which was released 10 years ago. What have they been doing in that time?
What's the thought process behind the 900MB limit? There is certainly no technical reason for it or one imposed by Sony, since it would be no different to downloading free DLC for games, or user created tracks for Trials for example.
I love Bethesda games but they have awful developers that doesn't know how to properly optimized their games. It doesn't help much that they run on an awful engine as well though. If Bethesda had better developers and a better engine, then Fallout 4 could easily run at 60 fps without any issues. I think it's a bit sad that reviewers refuse to criticize the technical issues and reduce the scores of Bethesda games, because Bethesda won't change anything if they constantly get away with it.
Om more up set that they wont be any more dlcs for season pass holders.....
@Devotion Thats why I am so surprised people talk about Bethesda games in Playstation top 20......
@BAMozzy. YeaH I remember. You would think that with that extra time they mide have got the sound working though. Cant even use the lightsaber mod
@Flaming_Kaiser
Because it has a strong fanbase. If they released a game that was almost broke and ran at 20 fps they would still get 9/10 reviews and sell a lot. I think that Skyrim on PS3 is a good example.
At this point you're really not allowed to complain anymore. If you own a playstation system, and you've played an open world bethesda game on it, and you STILL bought fallout 4, you set yourself up for failure.
Sorry to be a git but this was obviously always going to be the case to anyone that's used mods on the PC versions of FO3+ and TES.
@Napples Last gen was at least excuseable due to Cell architecture.. But the problem persisted to PS4 (which is much similar to PC) is really unforgivable on Bethesda...
