The announcement arrived in the form of a short teaser on the publisher's YouTube channel, which features a brief look at footage of the reworked game in action. It looks rather lovely – the world of Ivalice still a mystifying and beautiful place. We've embedded the trailer for your viewing pleasure below.
The remaster is also subtitled The Zodiac Age, implying it may introduce the Zodiac job system and rejigged combat from the Japan exclusive International Edition.
Are you excited to return to Ivalice next year? Is this a fantasy come true for you, or is another HD remaster the final straw? Take turns to do battle in the comments section below.

And thus E3 begins...
This is pretty big news, word is that the "International Zodiac" edition was much better than the other version of the game, which was already quite good on its own.
I would love to play that at my PS4, never finished it since my ps2 died and never got a new one.
Vaan has one of those faces that I just want to punch.
Just me?
I think this is easily the worst main Final Fantasy game. Yeah, including XIII.
I might give it another go though. Just to see if time has changed my opinion of it being a crap offline MMO with a rubbish cast of characters.
Take my money please.
@johncalmc Don't read the Eurogamer article:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-06-06-the-best-final-fantasy-game-is-finally-getting-a-remaster
Super excited! This is the best modern (post IX) Final Fantasy IMHO
love this game, been waiting for this, pretty much the same same combat on mmo ff14 and i love that game.
As I mentioned on the forum, knowing what I know now about FF12 (and its lack of similarity to previous instalments) I'll be approaching this differently as I'm sure it's still a pretty good RPG. Can't wait!
Pretty excited about this news as I spent over 50 hours on this game on the ps2 but never finished it...can't remember why..so very interested in a ps4 version.
Then again there are so many new rpgs out or being released why bother with an old one..?
Final fantasy tactics and vagrant story is a way better game to remaster rather than this. To this day the only thing I remember about this game is the protagonist name is vaan.
I'm ok for more game remaster thought, there are a lot of game that I want to replay from ps1 and ps2 era with better graphics.
This is one of my all-time favourites. Ivalice is so well realised it feels like a verh complete world. I've wanted to replay it for quite a while but the PS2 original looks hideous on my television. Very pleased it's getting a remaster!
I actually made it to the final place but didn't beat it because I was finishing side quests. My house was robbed and my PS2 and memory card were stolen. I tried playing this game again, but it just wasn't good enough in my books to get through a second time. I'll probably pass.
And thus XV is delayed by another 87 years.
I'll play it for the gameplay and world. The story and characters are doodoo
Ill probably get this.i remember not loving the story first time around but perhaps my views will have changed with age. I was hoping for a vita version tbh so slightly disapointed but can imagine the battle system being a little confusing on a small screen.
Also that eurogamer article is wrong. FF 9 is clearly the best
@wiiware They're both PSone games, though. They'd have to remake them from scratch.
Great news, love this game. I enjoyed it a lot more than 10 and 13.
Oh yeas! I hear the international version had a speed up feature of some sort which I think would massively help my enjoyment of the game. Extra customisation features are a huge plus as well obviously.
First FF game I bought and I quite enjoyed it. Didn't like that Aladdin-like getup Vaan was wearing though.
Yes, yes, yes! Out of all the final fantasy games, this is my favourite. I'm so chuffed it's getting a remaster.
Is this REAL? Wuuuuuh.
@get2sammyb I didn't take your advice. I read it. This is why we can't have nice things, people.
Great, now I have the chance to play it.
@BLPs That was my first reaction as well. But then I remembered all the other games Squenix puts out every year, and with FFXV due out this year (not holding my breath for Sept 30th unless it's already done and they are just waiting for PS4K Neo to launch that same day) a remaster of 12 really shouldn't take much effort.
3 things I remember about 12
First FF game with a truly 3D open world environment. It may have even have had camera control. As such, it didn't look nearly as good as X, but it felt much more alive and interactive.
Second, most forgettable FF game story and characters I ever played, and I had played the first 10 at that point, skipped 11.
Third, best Monster Hunter type game I ever played. After putting in about 50 hours on a story I don't remember anything about, I then spent a full 100 hours after that hunting monsters for the guild. I never did get that one which seemingly only came out on Wednesday during a blizzard, but I think I got most of the rest.
Probably wouldn't play it again, but if you like monster slaying side quests it will keep you entertained for a good long while. I'm pretty sure the game had a decent fast travel system, though I have no idea what it was. Maybe the floating pyramid save points. Yellow for save, green for travel? I just know with all those slaying missions backtracking never seemed like a chore. I HATE metrodvania type back tracking, no fast travel, no play. Thankfully this had it. Probably had chocobo riding as well, but I honestly can't recall.
DQ8 was a better FF game, my kids and I just called this FF:MH.
The gambit system. Top quality ye old English voice acting. Monster hunting. The zodiac spear. Sky pirates and Fran's voice.
Can't wait.
Awesome news! The only non-MMO Final Fantasy I never completed! Look forward to knocking it off the bucket list.
I bet people are much more excited about VII remake and/or XII remake than about XV if they have played the demo.
I'll be casting Hastega for the next 12 months. I wish they could have just shouted "Surprise, you can download it now!" at E3 2017.
Yeah!!!!
I've never played 12 so I'll probably have a bash at it!
This was the last Final Fantasy title I actually played. Great game, but they're going a little overboard with the remake thing, aren't they?
That's my favorite FF game!
@ricklongo If you ask me, now I'd ask them to remake VI or VIII and IX (the FF game with best metascore). Many people haven't played most FF games.
My favorite Final Fantasy ever (alongiside with VI), I'm very happy right now.
That said a version to VIta would be good too.
"The Zodiac Age" was the original subtitle or is it new?
@VanillaLake It's new I think.
@VanillaLake I can sympathise; I haven't played VIII either, for example. Still, it's a worrying trend in my mind. I think Square Enix has more remakes in the pipeline for the West right now than actual new announced games (there's two Final Fantasies and two Dragon Quests at the very least, and just last year they released a remastered Kingdom Hearts).
@Melucine I was mid game (and enjoying it quite a bit, except the lack luster story) when the PS3 came out and I tossed my PS2 and got a HDTV. XII on an HDTV through the (60 GB PS3) looked so ugly that I could not finish playing it. I am excited for this.
Never actually finished FF12. Got bored of it & hated Vann. Might pick up the remaster if it's reasonably priced, but I'm not itching to play it. Would much rather have a remaster/remake/port or whatever of Crisis Core on Vita/PS4.
@get2sammyb Thanks. The new subtitle probably reflects the fact that the remake (or remaster) is based on the Japanese International version...
@ricklongo You have a point but I guess they want to make the most of their amazing game history, because not always newer is better. Many people didn't have a PS before (like me) and there are those younger players that haven't played anything on PS or PS2.
Hell yes! One of the greatest FFs in my book. Will love to slay Yiazmat in HD!
Actually...
PushSquare: The remaster is also subtitled The Zodiac Age, implying it may introduce the Zodiac job system and rejigged combat from the Japan exclusive International Edition.
Eurogamer: Excitingly, it seems the Final Fantasy 12 remaster will be taking its cues from the International Edition of the game which never saw release outside of Japan, introducing tweaked combat and a new Zodiac job system.
I don't think XII was anything that impressive. I'd put it pretty low (maybe even at the bottom) on the list of FF games, but I'm still glad to see it getting remastered.
i just hope they actually announce a UK version because they have only confirmed a Japan release so far
SCRATCH THAT never mind western version was just confirmed on the official facebook page
Awesome I really liked the faster paced combat in this FF. Completed it but don't remember the story at all lol!
Just to confirm: this is coming to USA and Europe next year as well.

The one that got away! I'm actually happy about this because I never played it on the PS2.
Never really enjoyed it as much as I wanted to. It came out too late when the PS3 was already out and looked downright ugly in comparison to PS3 games. I did play it until at least halfway though, it seemed to just take itself far too seriously. I never got to find out if it got better though as my memory card got corrupted. So I'll pick this up and give it another go.
Figured this would be a good place to ask, feel free to delete if not mods.
I've always wanted to get into this series but never played a FF game. Is getting FF1 the best way to start and play through chronologically? Or is there a better order? Are the old 2D ones completely different? And are any not worth playing?
If there is only a couple that are considered "the best" I'd rather just play those, instead of burning myself out struggling through the whole series. But if they're all good and varied I'm still up for doing that. I know this (12) is one of the most popular, and I have a PS4, so should I just start here even? Have a Vita and PS3 too though so I can play all of them as far as I know.
@PorllM Difficult to say, I would avoid some ofthe older games (ff1-3 and 5) and the online games (11 and 14).
Have a go at FF6 first - if you dont like it avoid 4. Very old school but good nonetheless. FF7 is a classic, a must play - pickup the PS4 version. FF8 is my personal favourite, but without the nostalgia it probably plays slowly these days same with FF9. FF10 is a worth while purchase, the HD remaster on the VIta is awesome. You need a ps2 to play ff12, and ff13 is good but very limited.
So to summarise;
6
7
10
13
If you like them then
12
8
9
4
@PorllM Lol you'll get all kinds of responses asking which FF to start with! In fairness it's been covered here many times and everyone's got an opinion
My personal favourite is 7 but I'd say 9 is the best one to start with. Likeable characters, great music, fun story, entertaining throwbacks to previous instalments and serviceable graphics. Works great on Vita.
I never was able to finish this one. I got like 3/4 through the game and got stuck and quit. I keep trying to start back up every couple years but keep getting pulled away by newer, shinier games so maybe this will be my reason to finish it. I loved the world, it was beautiful and actually felt like a legit adventure once you got into it. The cast, even if they're not the most memorable ff cast, they definitely fit perfectly in this world. But I couldn't agree more about wanting to punch Vaan in the face. The whole "I wanna be a sky pirate!" (say it in a nasally voice) thing kinda makes him seem like a sissy but you learn to...not hate him...as much. I'm definitely ready to jump back in and go chill on the phon coast with some long legged bunny hybrids.
Ahhhh time to once again spend hours doing the Hunt Quests. My body is ready! And to anybody that played it when it came out and didnt like it, give it another chance. I hated it when i first played it. Then i played it a few years later and dont know why i hated it, its bloody brilliant!
Very nice. That means the PC version is coming too, and my collection will be complete.
@PorllM I never was into final fantasy when i was younger (i was more of a legend of legaia kinda guy) but played and enjoyed ffviii demo a few times and finally FFX was here and it was the first one i really dived into and finished and I've been a fan of the series ever since. Even have some love for the purty XIII still (also havent beat yet). Id suggest starting with X or any of the newer ones then work your way to the past. Unless you're like me then you have a place in your heart for the cruddy graphics of a time gone by, then by all means hit up the legends(VII,VIII, and IX). I've personally only played VIII (not just the demo either) but the others are on my to do list. Will probably pick up both ps1 and ps4 version of VII just so i know the difference and can understand the fanboys hate.
@SuperSilverback Exactly! From the combo level grinding, monster hunting to secret bosses, its a damn good time. My advice just get past the first 10 hours maybe even less and you'll get sucked into Ivalice for quite some time.
Thanks for the advice guys, was planning to start with 1 so I'm glad I asked. Will keep an eye out for one of the newer ones at a good price I think.
@PorllM Every person would tell you a different answer, so if you want to know what are considered by most people the best games in the series, you can see the list below (metascore ranking). You can start with FFX/X-2 remaster (PS4).

@johncalmc @get2sammyb I thought I was the only one. I hated almost everything about this game when it came out, especially it's god awful battle system
YESSS!!! Never played it, this will close the loop of FFs for me
This is HUGE news!!! By far my favourite Final Fantasy game!!!
Van was the worst part of this game. His inclusion single handedly makes this my second least favorite final fantasy (behind XIII-3).
Anyone else, besides penelo, would have made a better main character.
Cool, it really needed a rejiggered system
@PorllM Square Enix is having a little sale on their official website right now that you may want to check out. For example, $10 gets you the PS3 version of FFX+X-2 remaster, or my personal favorite FFXIII. The games are all very different with how they play (IMHO) starting with 7 and up, so definitely watch some reviews online! I personally started with 9, and I still think that the best gameplay-wise, but just go with your gut.
@rjejr
So you're saying it's more like Xenoblade Chronicles X than Monster Hunter?
Open world
Classic RPG style with leveling up
Hunting monsters, some of which only appear under specific conditions
Ya, sounds like Xenoblade X to me, without the mechs
@JaxonH It really wasn't anything like MH, no time limits or crazy camera controls, any of that, but monster hunting in general. Very much like XCX without the mechs, but XCX wasn't out 10 years ago when I played XII with my kids.
It's possible I would like FF12 now, but after 7, 8, 9 and 10 the story and color palate all seemed so meh. Hunting monsters for 100 hours was somehow fun though as I'd never done anything like that before. I still have the game and memory card but no PS2 or I'd go give it a whirl.
The only thing I remember about this game is Balthier and Fran. Best part of the game was those 2. My favorite part was when Fran went (.....) Anyone who played knows what I'm talking about.
May pick it up when its on sale. Don't really think its worth another 50-60 dollars unless more content is added, not just tweaks.
Great news!!!! Cant wait
I'm actually quite excited for this. I never quite beat the original. Part of the lack of motivation for me was that you could equip your entire team in exactly the same fashion and the characters never felt uniquely useful in battle. I truly hope this will come with the Japanese edition's job system to spice things up. Would definitely be worth a repeat visit for me.
I still remember how long it took me to find out about Quickenings in general. That was quite a revelation, hahaha.
ok I never played the game when it first came out so happy to have it coming out I am a massive rpg player and there are so many coming to the ps4
