Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue may have a December release date attached, but where the Mickey Mouse is Kingdom Hearts III? The game was announced what feels like an absolute eternity ago, but while we've seen some small snippets of gameplay, it's mostly remained locked up in Disneyland since being revealed.
And sadly, it doesn't sound like you should expect any more info at E3 2016 next week, as a small teaser at the end of today's Final Chapter Prologue trailer suggests that we'll learn lots more this winter. Could it put in an appearance at PlayStation Experience, per chance? More likely is D23 in November, but we'll have to wait and see.

Agggggh. This is so unacceptable.
Gather we'll still be waiting for a release date this time next year.
Is there any word on KH being the last game in the series? So many KH games.
No it's perfectly fine. Everything pointed to this. It has been my guess for months now. And 2.8 looks amazing so it should keep people busy this coming x-mas.
@rjejr Do you want it to be the last game? 3 is the end of the Xehanort saga. Aka baldy here. http://www.khwiki.com/images/thumb/8/85/Master_Xehanort_KHBBS.png/233px-Master_Xehanort_KHBBS.png
The villains of most of the other games are basically clones of him. Also he time travels. That's why he's "everywhere". Play the games or read some wiki. It's a lot but not as complicated as people make it out to be.
The whole KH series is a lesson in how to not keep fans interested. First two games release within 3 years of each other, then 12 years of spinoffs, .5's,.8's, across 7 gaming systems? How the hell did square manage this AND the FF15 debacle at the same time?
@Riririn I played KH and KH2 on PS2, I never played any of the others. KH was great, but KH2 seemed all wrong. If I thought they were promoting KH3 as an all encompassing wrap up finale I'd be likelly to play it sooner than if it was an open ended cliffhanger.
I'm still debating what to do about the FF7 remaster. I've been waiting for that game for so long, but if it's in 3 parts, and each part is 2 years a apart, I may just wait to see if they do a box set on PS5. If its only 2 parts and only 1 year apart I'll buy them both day 1.
@Napples Lol the group of people like you who whine about the non-numerical releases are the casual fans that no one cares about. Every game in the KH series (save maybe Coded) is a high-quality title with amazing story and character development. People who refuse to bother with them and just scream, "I WANT MUH MICKEY AND MUH HEARTLESS KILLIN ON MUH CONSOLE AND I WANT IT NAO" probably don't even have a clue about the story or characters which is essentially the core of KH.
@rjejr Can't speak for you on which games you like/don't like, but KH3 is a wrap-up to the story. Nomura said he may possibly make other KH games in the future, but they'll be pretty dissociated with the "Sora & Co." story-line (aka The Xehanort Saga).
@naut "but they'll be pretty dissociated with the "Sora & Co." story-line (aka The Xehanort Saga)."
Thank you very much. Guess I'll make sure I have all of he previous games played or replayed before KH3 then.
@rjejr Do at least play Birth by sleep and Dream drop distance before 3. Trust me it's needed.
@Riririn @rjejr You really need to play them all to fully understand the story. Days in incredibly important as well as CoM. The only one that you could just read a summary on is Coded. It's not so great.
@Riririn @naut Too. Many. Games. Maybe before 3 comes out I'll just watch Youtube videos of all the cut scenes. Once I figure out what order to watch them in that is.
@rjejr Meh I suppose that works. As long as you get the story. I'd go this way 1, Chain of memories, Days, 2, BBS, DDD. If anyone disagrees feel free to explain why but that's the order I recommend.
@rjejr It's not as bad as you think. And they're good games so who cares. If you want to get the story the "quick way" you could just pick up 1.5 HD Remix and 2.5 HD Remix. Buying those two packages will net you KH1, KH2, Re:CoM, and BBS — With Days and Coded being relegated to cutscene collections. Then you pick up 2.8 this Winter and you're good to go. Most KH games are usually only a little over 30 hours — So playing four of them basically amounts to like one Persona game. So it's not really a big deal at all. Plus they're amazing.
While I do think Days is 100% worth playing, some people may not be able to stomach going back to a standard DS game, so I guess there isn't that much shame in doing the HD cutscenes in 1.5 — I just love Days lol.
Also in reference to @Riririn, I'd play through them in release order. So the only change I'd make to his list is swapping the position of KH2 and Days.
Hmm I guess that can make things more fun. But many people automatically decide Roxas doesn't matter to the story. If they played Days first they'd have a completely different experience.
@Riririn "But many people automatically decide Roxas doesn't matter to the story."
That was me. As I said before, I didn't really like 2 as much as one, and I think the lead protagonist was one of the reasons why. And I liked Destiny Island and is friends. And the whole newness of it.
When the time comes I think I'll do it your way. It's just confusing keeping up w/ the .5s and the .8. It feels like these games have had remakes and remasters over the past 5 years.
@naut I hope you realize when you write it all out like that it wouldn't look simple to anybody who hasn't been following the series.
@rjejr "I didn't really like 2 as much as one, and I think the lead protagonist was one of the reasons why"
Not trying to sling accusations because maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but if you think Roxas is the lead protagonist of KH2 then you've only played KH2 for about 2 hours or less. The lead protagonist of KH2 is Sora — You only play as Roxas for the first couple hours.
Also the ".5's" and such are only confusing if you pretend they are lol. The games have been remade into HD releases, that's what I'm trying to tell you. The collections are called "1.5" and "2.5" respectively. All they are are HD collection packs. One has one half of the games, the other has the other half of the games. Very simple. So all you need to do is buy two disks and you instantly have every game in series thus far. Not complicated whatsoever.
@Napples I understand what you mean very well. The first time I realized that I had to pay $240 to play the next KH, I moved on from the franchise. Since the entire series seems to have migrated to PS3 and PS4, I may give it another try.
@naut That's funny about Roxas, that's the same thing my wife keeps telling me. Really, the only thing I remember about that game is having to kill 1,000 bad guys in a valley. I think that was about halfway thru. I do think I finished it though, just can't remember. Well I do remember, but I'm not sure if I'm remembering 1 or 2.
And if 1.5 and 2.5 have ALL the games, what's on 2.8? And did 1.5 and 2.5 release on both PS3 and PS4 in different versions, at the same time or different times? I've been following them but not at all closely, only in passing. And I remember 1 game was on DS, but them maybe re-released on 3DS, but I might have imagined that last part. I really hate when series switch consoles, I still haven't played Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon on 3DS and I really liked LM on Gamecube.
@rjejr 1.5 and 2.5 are PS3 only.
2.8 has:
1. An HD remake of the latest game in the series (Dream Drop Distance) — The only game missing from 1.5 and 2.5.
2. A small prequel game to KH3 called Birth By Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage.
3. An hour long movie called "Back Cover" which takes place hundreds of years before the original game.
Also, side note. 3DS is pretty darn inexpensive and has a wonderful library. No excuse there, really.
DDD didn't make it to 2.5 because it was still new-ish at the time and they wanted to wait and release it on the PS4 along with the new story bits that explains stuff and hypes KH3. You can find both 1.5 and 2.5 for around 10-20 Euros each. Or like less than 20 bucks in you're in the US. They were worth replaying imo. Plus you get new bosses and stuff that were exclusive to Japan.
@naut also 0.2 is meant to be the size of a KH2 world
@SKC_Diamond Yeah pretty short.
@naut "3DS is pretty darn inexpensive"
3DS is the same price now as it was 5 years ago after the original price drop. If I wanted to pay $169 for it I would have done so then. The 3DS XL is 4 years old and that's been $199 since launch. They did get the 2DS right - launch at $129, $99 a year later, then $79 a year later. Had they been doing that w/ the XL I'd own one.
No 1.5 and 2.5 on PS4? Guess I'll wait for the bundle, which would be awkwardly numbered KH 4.0. And 2.8 is ONLY on PS4? What kind of crack are they smoking over there? And you wonder why I get upset @get2sammyb
@rjejr The current system in the lineup is the New 3DS XL which, yes, is $200 but has much better hardware than the original 3DS had. Like you just pointed out, you can get a 2DS for like $80 (w/ game!) so just go ahead and do that if you don't care about latest and greatest. Don't see what the issue is.
1.5 and 2.5 were both in development before the PS4 launched, and they released within like a year of the PS4's launch. Makes sense that they weren't in development for PS3. Plus, releasing them on PS3 made them very accessible since the PS3 has an incredibly large user-base at this point. The reason 2.8 is only on PS4 is because the new prequel episode I mentioned is running on the KH3 engine — So obviously there can't be a PS3 version. No one's smoking crack — again — you're just blowing it out of proportion because this series is slightly more complicated than your typical RPG series.
@naut "this series is slightly more complicated"
Only slightly? PS2, Ds, PSP, 3DS, PS3 and PS4 for the oringal games plus an oddly numbered mishmash of bundles. . I'd hate to see your idea of a very complicated series.
And I don't want a 2DS. The whole point behind the 3DS is games in 3D, and it only plays them in 2D, so what's the point? I'm over 6, my eyes aren't in fear of the 3D effect. And yes, the "New" systems have upgraded hardware, but the same price 4 or 5 years later still seems a bit much. And the upgrades aren't really doing all that much either. I'm waiting for NX now.
@rjejr Your overblowing it again lol. It's an "either/or" thing. You can play every game in the series with either:
1. A PS3 and a PS4 (two systems). Or--
2. A PS2, DS, PSP, and 3DS. All pretty dang common for most gamers except the PSP.
Also, as a huge Nintendo-fan I can tell you that the 3D is basically worthless. I have a New 3DS XL and I keep the 3D turned off constantly. It's cool sometimes but usually it just makes the game looks fuzzy and strains the eyes. If you were buying a N3DSXL you'd be buying it for the faster speeds and bigger screens — Not the 3D. Also, you're going to skip out on the whole entire 3DS library for the NX? Yokay lol. I'm starting to understand what kind of gamer I'm dealing with here.
If you already have a PS3 there absolutely NO single reason not to get the two packs. If you don't. Well... Not sure what to do then. Nobody even knows if they'll ever come out on the PS4.
@naut You're dealing w/ a gamer who's still waiting to hook up one of these to his Wii U, but since that looks unlikely I'm holding out hope for an NX version. I'm a TV gamer, not a handheld gamer.
Gee...I wonder if they'd do that. I mean nobody knows what the NX is. And the Wii U is out of the question. The PS4 is more likely to get the other game packs. But then again they've already sold a ton of PS3 copies of the games already. Both have gotten essentials releases. Maybe through some sort of miracle they'll release a triple pack once 2.8 is out. Lets hope.
