The PlayStation 4 Slim launches tomorrow in Japan alongside Persona 5, meaning that regular PlayStation 4 sales have fallen off a cliff. The current-gen console managed to shift just 560 units last week, with the PlayStation 3 actually selling more than double that. All eyes are now on next Wednesday's charts, as they'll feature the Slim's opening numbers.
In terms of software, only one new entry made it into the top five, and that was Tokyo Xandu eX+ - an enhanced edition of action role-playing game Tokyo Xandu. On PS4, the upgraded re-release sold through a rather dire 15,069 copies. We need Persona 5, and we need it now.

Worst week for hardware since forever, says ZhugeEX

Going to be really interesting to see how Persona 5 and PS4 Slim goes down. Hoping for a big week, but I can't shake the feeling that it will disappoint.
Not quite as bad as this http://kotaku.com/last-week-microsoft-reportedly-sold-99-xbox-ones-in-ja-1754211746
@Worlock_ed To be fair, Microsoft may as well not sell their consoles in Japan it's that bad for them. Sony, on the other hand, needs to do better. Let's see how the Slim and Persona 5 improve things.
PS4 is doomed!
@Octane I think that may be lost on people here, but it made me chuckle.
On the bright side for Sony, even if PS4 doesn't sell well next week, they can just say people are waiting on the Pro, or the FFXV bundle. There are reasons to wait, even in a country that doesn't have Black Friday.
It will be top of the charts next week, pent up demand will see to that, it's the weeks after leading up to Pro that matter.
@get2sammyb
Any idea how or if PSVR sales will be tracked? It's still a peripheral, not a console, even if it is a $400 one. Guess we can always go by the tried and true "stock available on store shelves" metric to see if it is selling out or not.
I bet the PS4 Slim sales are going to be affected with the PS4 Pro releasing two months later.
Microsoft should just give up on Japan for now and give the Scorpio a chance but with low expectations.
I find it a little odd that they only rapped about the PS4 Slim in that commercial.
Its not that bad (the calm before the storm! )
@rjejr No idea on VR. I'm guessing it won't be listed like a console, so we'll probably have to rely on Sony for data.
@get2sammyb Thanks.
Why care about Japanese sales charts? They have a very awkward choice in hardware and software. They're kinda irrelevant to the west for the most part. The few studios over there who are relevant has been westernized to the point where they're hardly Japanese anymore.
Could this be a prelude to the rest of the World.
@Bhattiboy Doubt it, Japan has become a very handheld centric country for it's gaming now.
@get2sammyb Persona never really had high sales.
Ps4 on the other hand, some people are probably holding off for Slim or Pro.
@get2sammyb
Nah, Japan loves their Shin Megmi Tensei games. And last I checked, Persona Dancing All Night- a spin off of a spin off, sold like crazy. Even rivaled SMT IV sales on 3DS.
My guess is it's gonna hit 40-50k next week. 30 at the very worst
@Grawlog
I think we're all going to be surprised how little PS4 slim is going to turn things around. Not even Wii U ever sank this low... If it wasn't clear yet, it will be after the Slim does nothing, that Japan is done with home consoles.
"PS4 sells DOUBLE Xbox One in Japan" is more accurate
Thank God the PS4 still managed to stay about the Xbox ONE in Japan because that would of been embarrassing
According to analyst Zhuge EX, this is the worst week in hardware sales since records began. Yikes.
@Gamer83 The Wii U never had a hardware revision - you have to take that into account. Sales are clearly dropping because of the Slim, but having said that, I too don't think you'll see a massive jump in PS4 sales. I reckon it'll hop back to the 20k mark and stay there again.
