SEGA's still very much looking into those Shenmue remasters that we're all screaming for on the PlayStation 4, so its stance hasn't changed since… Well, it last gave lip service to fans a few months ago. "The issue is that it is a big game," a SEGA Europe representative told MCV, clearly forgetting that there are actually two Shenmue games. "It is a project from many years ago."
The spokesperson added: "If we are to do it, we'd want to do a fantastic conversion to the current platforms, and there are a lot of licences in the game, which were cleared many years ago, so we will need to renegotiate those contracts. We are looking into it. We haven't given it a green light, but it has our full attention."
Development on Shenmue III, meanwhile, continues in earnest. To be honest, even though we haven't gotten any meaningful updates on the threequel in over a year, writing that previous sentence still manages to make this author smile. As for those Shenmue remasters, expect SEGA to be putting out the exact same statement several decades from now.

I think I can help you with why they keep saying "Looking at it" @get2sammyb. Just gotta translate what he said.
Lots of licenses to renegotiate and pay for, several brands may not see it worthwhile or exist now, lots of redoing graphics and VA and the such.
Oh and the little thing in that doing it the first time nearly killed them financially but we wont count that.
This will cost them loads, and that is money they may not be sure on because as you and I have admitted before, this is high quality, yet niche title stuff here. Maybe after Shenmue 3 the attention is there to get the series up to date and ready to lead into 3, but its also a maybe, and all that money and remembering what happened initially will be a worry.
If it was me, realistically, I would say no. Just flat out say it, and wait to see what the realistic, not kickstarter based demand for the 3rd title is. See the pre-orders and downloads, and if does well, redo the first two leading into the 4th, since they've already said 3 isn't the end.
Can't wait to play the first two Shenmue games in 2025!
No sense in anyone holding their breath for these remasters, to be honest. It makes more sense to make the investment in the original releases of the games and their respective systems.
"I see."
Just writes itself, don't it?
I would like to see Shenmue 1 & 2 remastered, but I understand if it can't happen now, or ever.
Honestly, a 1&2 remaster would probably be more shocking for me than a Shenmue 3, since it would take a lot of money that they'd probably rather invest in Shenmue 4.

Hmm... I can't help but think it might actually happen before number 3 releases, or even alongside it. The Kickstarter has been a huge success so they have actual numbers as to how many people would be interested.
There was a trail of small clues leading up to the announcement of number 3, and I think there's a similar thing happening here. Sega is talking about this a lot more than they ever used to, and in a more transparent fashion to boot.
If not, they'll look and see how Shenmue 3 does. If it's successful, you can bet you're arse they'll do it.
Now how about the streets of rage remaster! Come on Sega catch up.
It wouldn't surprise me if Sony actually finance the remasters, much like the Lucasarts games. After all they already have a keen interest in Shenmue 3.
@Churchy cross platform and PC they could probably sell a couple of million, full price for the bundle would be lovely
Yeah, keep looking. I will keep looking for a working Dreamcast and a working Xbox so I can finally beat 1 and play 2. Tatsunoko vs Capcom was also a localization and licensing nightmare for a niche game and Capcom did it.
With my dislike of remasters, the only one I care about is the one that wont be done. Now Sony will say Crash is impossible or something.
@themcnoisy Yes! As long as they keep the music exactly how it is, especially stage 5 in SoR 1 with the tough as nails Blaze Clones at the end. What a game.
@ApostateMage there's a technique to beat them in one player. Walk backwards and down away from them. One blaze clone will always jump back after reaching 3/4 of the screen the other clone will continue to walk towards you and you just press B and C to do the reverse hit - keep doing that until the first clones beat. If they move position from a badly timed attack move forward to half the screen then back in to position. A bit cheesy but it works. the second one is loads easier on her own. I prefer streets of rage 2, hard mode 1 life only run.
@themcnoisy I'd like a streets of rage remaster and reboot, just greedy.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi The remakes already been made by fans and taken offline by Sega which makes it all the worse. Really good version, loads of modes and remixed tunes. No idea why they didnt sign that game up or the key people behind it and release it.
Sega will get on with it right after some forklift work, checking some drawers, looking for some sailors and playing some old SEGA games.
