Recent sales data would suggest that Street Fighter V hasn't been performing well at all over the last few months, but Capcom's still marching on with its downloadable content plans. The game's initial batch of additional characters ended with Urien, and now the Japanese publisher has teased what's coming next.
Announced during the title's latest pro tournament, veteran fighter Akuma will be joining the fray at some point. We don't have a specific release date just yet, but he'll be playable at next month's PlayStation Experience, which suggests that he's not too far away.
Akuma sure gets around, doesn't he? In case you don't already know, the grim looking martial artist also features in the latest build of Tekken 7, which is heading to PlayStation 4 next year. Can you handle all this Akuma? Unleash hell in the comments section below.

He's one of the most popular characters so I can see him doing the game some good in terms of mass appeal. And showing up at the very end of season one is very Akuma-like! Btw yesterday RedBull Grounds tournament was viewed by 40K people...not too shabby! Looking forward to PS Experience for the grand finals.
p.s. Based on the kanji on his gi I think it's safe to assume he will come in the Shin-Akuma flavour this time around.
@Feena Street Fighter V is in a bit of a weird position. Like you say, the tournaments pull in loads of viewers online - it really is a great fighting game to watch - but sales have fallen off a cliff. Last I read, it's stuck around the 1.4 million mark and just won't budge.
Fortunately its community still seems strong - but I think Capcom really has to try a different approach. Clearly, the 'game as a service' model hasn't worked all that well, although I don't doubt that it'll be making good money off all the DLC.
@ShogunRok totally agree. Very curious about how they will approach "season 2"
Like Rise of the Tomb Raider do you think why sales aren't great is because of exclusivity? Or could it be because of the lack of content and iffy launch?
@PlaytendoGuy both + fighting games are becoming sadly niche again.
@PlaytendoGuy It's a bit of both like @Feena says, but at the same time, Capcom has really, really dropped the ball with Street Fighter V. It's an amazing example of a great game that's been butchered by completely stupid decisions.
Ever since it launched, there's been a very negative air surrounding it, initially due to its lack of content. Then, there were relatively huge DLC delays, and the story mode wasn't added until months down the line. It doesn't help that Capcom has always been incredibly poor in relaying what's happening with the game. Case in point, Capcom still hasn't uploaded an official Akuma trailer to YouTube. The whole thing is embarrassing, to say the least.
When a game has that sort of negativity surrounding it, only the hardcore will be able to see through it. That's the main reason why sales have stopped. More casual players were put off buying it months ago, and Capcom has done very little to try and rekindle their interest since.
Akuma obviously will not be included in the Season Pass... Right?
I really like SF5 but I don't know some characters seem difficult for me to play as. For some reason I fond hard to get better in this game. And now, with the new Blazblue, my time with it will be limited.
I won't be surprised if they released him around when Tekken 7 hits PS4/Xbox One. I didn't really use Akuma much back on Street Fighter 4, but still a nice addition.
Hooray! Don't know why he wasn't in it at first.
@Speedy67 he's a bit of a diva...almost always skips first incarnation of
a game XD
By the time it has a full roster, we'll have paid more for character DLC than the core game.
@JaxonH I really can't understand where you guys are coming from when you say stuff like this. You don't have to pay actual money to get the new characters and it's not difficult at all to get the kind of fight money it takes. I have no season pass and got all characters + 500k money still stored and I am no pro player at all...It feels pretty much like unlocking new characters to me! And every character you unlock will give you other ways to make fight money (his prologue, his trials and survival mode) so If you don't want to play the game to get the new content you can also pay real money.
It's also important to remember that you don't have to get EVERYTHING, just choose what you really want and purchase to with your game credit...
@Feena
Well the first thing you have to understand is that I've been frustrated with this game from day one with all the issues dealing with single player.
The 6 character pass was $30, and if more characters are on the way I can only imagine the total cost I'm going to have paid for the full lineup, a lineup which has come standard in previous entries, and even rival fighters like KoF XIV have provided day one lineups more robust than SFV after all its' DLC combined.
I'm aware that you can technically unlock everything without paying but they heavily weighted this to the side of paying. I don't play online. Been a fan of Street Fighter since the early nineties and I've always played the offline single player modes, nothing more. I have yet to amount the cash to even buy one character much less all of them.
And as if that wasn't enough, the story mode was so boring that I couldn't even finish it and that was supposed to be the main appeal to me.
I know you may not understand where I'm coming from, but that is why I (and presumably others) say these kinds of things. $30 for 6 extra characters, and even then the lineup isn't half as big as it should have been out of the box... it's frustrating. And while I did pay because I want those characters and I'm never going to spend enough time to unlock them all, it's definitely frustrating to see more paid DLC after the fact.
And it's not that I was expecting them to suddenly just dump free characters on us after those six were done, but it's just the compilation of everything up into this point has been a frustrating experience and then realizing that I'm going to have to pay even more money and continue to invest more money to get the lineup I feel should have been there from the get-go is enough to get me to vent when I read about it.
@JaxonH Hey, I am not saying the handling of the game has been perfect, far from it. But in a world of 8$ Mai or 12$+ amiboos that don't even unlock the characters, SFV ways to get content for free if you play the game seems pretty sweet to me. And most of those ways do not imply playing online at all. Also roster in SFV: very diverse, with all play styles covered...and just enough characters to really learn your match ups and then build from there.
p.s. The story mode actually gave me the feels - seeing the characters and storylines from the games of my childhood and onward coming together to culminate in the SF3 era-story...
@Feena I wonder if he will be the final boss in arcade mode. Shin Akuma would fit the bill.
SFV is worth now, it was a good game from the beginning, but now is great!
@adf86 I was thinking the same... And they are gonna release the Dictator Thailand stage soon so it all adds up. Btw the new Rashid stage releasing tomorrow is insane, on a plane flying over Dubai...
@Feena I was going to say that a stage is available soon. I usually don't like massive rosters in fighting games if they lead to clones (which I felt USFIV had) but Akuma is different, especially if he's more like Oni.
@adf86 yes USF4 was a bit too pestered with clones imho, and I hope SFV season 2 won't be "attack of the clones": if they spin Akuma the right way (air fireball, warp etc) it won't feel like Ryu at all. Ken has already become a very different entity. I also believe the Eisbahn conspiracy theory. He's coming XD
@Feena I had no idea what you were on about with Eisbahn last night till I looked it up lol
