The conclusion to Campo Santo's walking sim in the wilderness may have divided opinion, but Firewatch has done well for itself commercially. According to the developer, Henry and Delilah's adult yarn has now sold one million copies across all formats, which is a huge success for such a small developer.
We didn't really buy into the fiction as much as other outlets, but we could certainly admire the art direction and attempts at telling a grounded story – even if it goes off-the-rails in the middle-third. Good on Campo Santo - I really liked Firewatch, although I also wasn't a huge fan of the narrative choices towards the end. However, I did like the art direction, the mood and voice acting which made me want to play to the end. It went for something different which can only be a good thing in gaming.
Glad it was a success for those guys.
Was a bit disappointed in the end with this after the story looked so exciting in the trailers preceding it. The scenery was nice to walk around in though...
Congrats to them. Seems a likely one for ps+ when the sales to start to slow. I look forward to seeing what it's all about.
I finished Everybody's Gone TTR yesterday, and I found it absolutely dire. I couldn't connect with the story at all, and there were literally no surprises.
Had it not been for the beautiful scenery, I would not have made it to the (even though I had no expectations) disappointing end.
I don't think I would mind another walking game, as long as the story was captivating.
I liked Gone Home, for instance.
Based on this, could anyone let me know if I should give Firewatch a go or not?
Thanks!
@DamienVonOslo Hmm not sure then. There is more environmental interaction in Firewatch then EGTTR and the voice acting is great. I just think that the story, particularly th ending seems to be slightly marmite - some like it and some don't. However, I think the game is like £6 in the current January sale so might be worth a shot!
Much deserved. Superb game.
@Rudy_Manchego You're right, should be worth a shot - I'll get it during the sale or even wait it out hoping for a PS Plus appearance. It's not like I haven't got a backlog from hell anyways 😁
Enjoyed it somewhat, wouldnt really recommend it to anybody. Performance on PS4 was shoddy, for a game practically without textures I think thats odd. The beginning seemed interesting from a narrative point of view, but it didn't carry that momentum to the end. Gameplay was non-existent, would've been nice to have at least some puzzles of some sort, instead of prolonging the game by making you run from one end of the map to the other, interupted only by rappeling down a steep slope. Voice-acting however was excellent and the atmosphere was nice too.
