The final Japanese hardware and software charts of 2016 are in, and the PlayStation 4 has reclaimed its place at the top of the former. Sony's current-gen console jumped Nintendo's New 3DS LL, shifting a relatively healthy 73,421 units. That means the PS4 manged to sell through almost 1.8 million units in Japan last year. Not an amazing figure, but it's the only device to have sold more in 2016 than it did in 2015.
Sadly, the software charts weren't so kind to PlayStation. With no new releases, the only PS4 title to make it into the top five was Final Fantasy XV, which has now sold a total of 884,422 copies in the Land of the Rising Sun. Over the next couple of months, it may be able to break the one million mark.

I'm surprised that FFXV sales haven't hit a million yet, definitely January I imagine, that'd be a quarter of owners right? Pretty good.
Whenever I see that picture of the PlayStation it looks Taken as in Destiny Taken King.
x box 1 221 sold hahaha
Noctis and guys have some legs! They could be ps4's first million seller in Japan...
Unless Nintendo royally screws up the Switch I think this will be the last year PS4 is the top selling console in Japan.
@Gamer83 Nintendo screwing up royally is not unprecedented at all... this is the company that gave us Wii U and its Gamepad, possibly their worst blunder since the Virtual Boy.
N64 controller was pretty bad also. In fact, I didn't like any of Nintendo's controllers besides NES and SNES, those were basically it and after that it just went downhill in terms of controller design.
