Final Fantasy XV is a very ambitious game - sometimes for the worse. It can feel like a title that's been pieced together using countless ideas and concepts, and not all of them work as well as they should. It's slightly mad, then, that Square Enix seemingly wants to add so much more to its latest blockbuster.
In an interview with Famitsu, translated by Nova Crystallis, director Hajime Tabata spews a whole load of stuff about the developer's post-release plans. To start with, Tabata mentions that the team is currently working on "improving the scale and comfort" of the title's latter chapters, which are much more linear than the game's earlier sandbox escapades. What this actually means could be anyone's guess, but clearly the developer isn't satisfied with what the later scenarios have to offer.
Downloadable content, meanwhile, is still very much on the cards - whether it's added via purchasable packs, the season pass, or through free content updates. Tabata says that the developer would like to add "time-limited mob hunts based on enemies from the original story", which at least sounds pretty interesting. What's more, the team is still looking into ways to add extra playable characters to Noctis' party. Again, how any of this will actually work is anyone's guess right now.
Perhaps most surprising, though, is that Tabata goes on to talk about the possibility of player-created characters. As we know, Final Fantasy XV is getting some sort of multiplayer component, and custom avatars could play a part in this. However, there's also mention of player characters appearing in the main game. Sounds crazy to us, and we're not sure anyone asked for it, but we're intrigued all the same.
What do you make of all this? Is it about time for Square Enix to stop p*ssing about and actually tell us what it plans on doing? Try not to look too bemused in the comments section below.

I suppose when you've been developing something for ten years it's hard to stop
@BrianC Feature creep seemedto be a huge problem for em. Once they mentioned wnting the Just Cause 3 engine to get full scale airships i just...ugh.
Seems like they are planning to fix some parts of the game and finish others. Dont...know if thats good
What?!
Just abandon the game and make XVI - or at least XV-II - already!
It's cool they are adding new stuff, but I dunno, I won't bother coming back for the occasional timed event. Will need to be substantial changes and new features. I do look forward to playing it through start to finish again in a couple of years though.
@Boerewors Pretty sure they have various development teams
It'll have acorns that will turn into trees over the course of the game too!
Too little too late. This is why you finish games before releasing them. Most of their most loyal fan base already completed the game. No amount of patches and DLC is going to fix the first time experience for most of the people it actually matters to, the longtime fans that waited 10 years for a game that released unfinished.
Judging by latest glitch vast world videos, Multiplayer looks fun by using them~
Well there is a video on YouTube showing someone who glitches the invisible walls in the last few chapters. This enabled him to run around the entirety of the Niffleheim map, sometimes kilometres away from the actual story locations and with traffic in some parts, suggesting these sections were intended to be open world too.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what they are adding and I would guess that Iris or Aranea would be the obvious choices for extra characters as they already have battle animations and voices, the former also appears in the car and has a chocobo. As for the other stuff well let's wait and see, I'll be playing the carnival but I'm not sure about future timed events, definitely the dlc chapters
@tabris95 Hmmm bit harsh to be honest, it's hardly too little too late as the game is very good. Yes it is frustrating that the game was not released with all this extra stuff but that doesn't mean it wasn't "complete" at the time of release. It's easy to see this kind of patching and updating as a negative but it's worth trying to see it from the other perspective too. It's cool we have technology that can deliver these kind of improvements over time.
Wow, was looking forward to playing this soon. Let me know when it's actually finished, I guess.
@kyleforrester87 I mean, additional content is always nice and appreciated, but things like character development and motivations as well as pacing for the final chapters should have been ironed out before hand. What I'm saying is you only get to experience the game for the first time once and some of what's being patched shouldn't have had to be patched.
This is why I was on the fence about getting this at launch or waiting. Maybe I should have waited, but I just had to have that Chocobo skin for the Regalia from Amazon.
I get that people like add-ons, but at what point do people decide they should stop buying games at release, b/c not only will they be half price 3 months later, they might actually be working correctly 3 months later? They aren't talking about add-on stories like Last of Us, but fixing parts of the game they admit they screwed up. Even a game like Witcher 3 which won all those awards redid their menu system to make the game better a year later. Now a year may be a long time to wait, some people have to have it day 1 regardless, but I think at some point Day 1 sales are going to diminish as people wait for the game to be both fixed and completed. Obviously yearly and online games are excluded, but for single player experiences, what's the rush?
@tabris95 I agree, but the game wasn't bad, so the devs deserve some slack. Undoubtedly it will be better through updates but when these updates are incorporating fan feedback it's unrealistic to expect it to have been released that way originally. I'll just consider the final version "The Directors Cut" or something lol.
(Kinda related, the original Advent Children was okay but the version with additional scenes added is so much better. It's amazing what 15-20 minutes more exposition can do!)
sooo...what they're saying is: the game was nowhere near to being finished when they released it?
@kyleforrester87 absolutely this on both counts. The advent children dvd release made little sense to me. The blu-ray release meanwhile saw key scenes moved and added and the film is so much better for it.
And on your first point, totally agree. I get the frustration of some, its completely understandable, but ultimately the game is brilliant in spite of its flaws. Granted im still in the early chapters despite over thirty hours of play (thats how much I have enjoyed the questing) so perhaps more frustration will come as I get through the story, but so far I love it. Certainly not as good (from a story perspective) as the classics, but still a towering achievement. Im sure I will come back for a NG plus if the additions are worthwhile.
@Rob_230 Yeah.. I mean if the game was released in a genuinely poor state it would be a different story. Glad you enjoyed the special edition of AC aswell, those extra scenes and adjustments made a big difference!
@ZurapiiYohane64 completely forgot dissidea arcade. Imagine that will be coming to PS4 this year. Still not sure what I think about that seriea. Have the two psp games, but really not sure if I liked them. Lacked abit of depth from memory
Not starting this one anytime soon then.
the crazy thing is that the game in its current state (even if it has a few rough edges) is insanely packed with stuff to do...even when you get the platinum trophy, you're still very far from completing the game's true challenges.
I think they really want to extend the life of the title on the shelves and make you feel glad that you purchased it...I am ok with thus (especially since they are talking about free updates as well as dlc), don't really understand what is bad about getting more content later on if the game is meaty to begin with.
Like the game is great enough already! I'm hyped for comrades!
I cant wait i guess ill come back for a second play though when they release the updates
It just goes to show that a lot of content was left on the cutting room floor due to time constraints and instead of making a new game with all that cut content they're going to patch it right back into the main game.
How is this a bad thing?
@ShogunRok please help me understand~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@tabris95 maybe for you but i'm a long time fan and found the game a lot of fun, still am in fact
i had no problem with the story, even though some things did need to be explained better like just what Promto really is or why Ravus Nox Fleuret wanted to help you but all in all i had am still having a blast with the game
@Bliquid
I'd do the same if I were them, but they already ruled out the possibility of making it a 2 or 3 parter. They might regret that decision now, but I see them sticking to that plan. Although another "Versus" wouldn't be exactly like a "-2" I guess
I wish I had more freedom to drive the car, I want to go off road with it dammit.
@manu0 No, what they are saying is that based on fan feedback, and on their own observations since release, there are additional features they would like to add to the game. Some of these may have been features that they wanted to go in the final release, but like all games, movies, etc..., what one wants, and what is realistically possible given the time frame and the budget, do not always see eye to eye, and things get cut. I do agree with @tabris95 though. You only get one chance at a first impression. I enjoy the game, and minus an odd plot hole, and appreciate that they are adding more things to it, but I already played through it and likely won't again.
The game was great, i enjoyed playing it and it definitely made more sense watching the kings Glaive first then playing the game after which some ppl didn't do causing confusion but overall i loved it!
Them dungeons though, oh lord them dungeons!
