Unfortunately for PlayStation 4 exclusive Nioh, it's had to go up against a new Dragon Quest game during its first week on the Japanese market, meaning that it was never going to snatch that coveted top spot. The critically acclaimed action title skewered second place, selling 75,477 copies - not a gigantic amount, but not a bad start for a new property.
Things are quiet elsewhere, with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard hanging around in fourth, while the likes of Gravity Rush 2 and Final Fantasy XV remain in the top 20. The latter edges ever closer to shifting one million copies in Japan, but at the rate it's selling, it's still going to take a long time for it finally to get there.
On the hardware side of things, the PS4 simply refuses to budge from first place, selling another 22,282 units. Once again, Sony's current-gen console is the only system that's showing growth year-on-year, which is obviously a positive sign.

Apparently Nioh sold out so I wonder if it could've beaten Dragon Quest if they had more stock?
Nioh deserves so much better than that... #NiohStillGOTYCompetitor
I bet Sony wish they made more stock of Nioh
Xbox saw a 1% sales increase week on week I see, selling one extra unit! hehe
Go NIOH! Loving this game at the moment.
How long will we be seeing GTA5 on these lists?
Will be interesting to see what happens to PS4 after Switch comes out. Even if it the Switch is out-selling it, if the PS4 can continue to show growth or at least level out and maintain 20K-25K week-after-week that would have to be considered a 'win' given the current state of home consoles in Japan.
Nioh is a masterpiece. It really deserves success an we want this to become and estabilished franchise
Looking like 4.5 million PS4s in March, and 5 million will also happen this year. PS4 is showing no signs of stopping, unlike ahem some other consoles.
@Gamer83 Here's a thought: what if Switch starts selling less than PS4 after the launch?
@Mahe
Don't see that happening.
@Gamer83 @Mahe I'd pretty much expect Switch to sell out at launch and have a very strong period following that. How long that period goes on for is anyone's guess, though.
@ShogunRok
Well, it seems like a device made for Japan, I don't think it'll ever have any problems selling there.
@ShogunRok Of course it will sell well at launch. But that's irrelevant in the grander scale. The real question is how it will do after launch demand has been met and early adopters have wasted their money on the latest Nintendo brainfart.
It's not like PS4 is nearing 4.5 million on the back of the launch almost 3 years ago. Its consistent sales week after week have brought the PS4 here and will take it further. Wii U never got that far even in Japan, and it never will. What if Switch follows Wii U?
