There was a little period towards the tail of the PlayStation 3 era and the beginning of the PlayStation 4 generation where it felt like Insomniac Games had parted ways with Sony for good: Sunset Overdrive was announced as an Xbox One exclusive, the studio formed a tight relationship with Oculus, and no one seemed to want to show Ratchet & Clank's movie tie-in. Then the latter released and all of the wounds seemed to fade away.
We now know, of course, that the Burbank-based developer is working on arguably the biggest PS4 exclusive in the Japanese giant's portfolio: Spider-Man. And when you consider the enormous (and, honestly, unexpected) commercial success of Ratchet & Clank, it's probably safe to assume that its North Carolina studio is prepping a sequel. Which begs the question: what's going on with the aforementioned Sunset Overdrive franchise?
Posed that very question by Game Informer magazine, boss Ted Price had a very interesting response. "We are passionate about that franchise, and we own it, so you may see more Sunset in the future from us," he said. "No promises, and no timeline to speak of, but it is something that represents our willingness to create unexpected experiences." Is that a hint that a potential sequel could go multiplatform, perhaps?
The reality here is that Insomniac Games is probably too busy to be thinking about Sunset Overdrive sequels right now. But it's pretty clear that if it can find a publisher β and it doesn't sound like that's going to be Microsoft right now β it's willing to revisit the property, presumably on a multiformat basis. Which leaves us with one lingering query: is this a brand that you'd like to see make the jump to PS4? Make a bad joke in the comments section below.

I'd absolutely love for the first one to make its way to the PS4. I'm kind of tired of only getting sequels. Hahaha
@glassmusic I doubt that would ever happen.
I'd welcome it but I'd probably not be all over it. I've seen clips of it in action. Bit too wacky for me personally.
I'd rather have more Ratchet and Clank to be honest. Both Splatoon and Sunset Overdrive suffer from "look how cool we are, we love the 90's" in their aesthetics, and it is so annoying. Also, the world traversal and combat in Sunset just felt sluggish compared to R&C, not nearly as fun.
I'm game. I'm an Insomniac fan thanks to Spyro and Ratchet, as well as being the closest we'll get to a new Jet Set Radio, so Sunset Overdrive already had my interest. I'd love a future installment on PS4.
Sunset Overdrive, to me, is the best Xbox One exclusive. I got it Day One and it's up there as one of most fun I've had with a game. It was also my first Insomniac game and when I played Ratchet on the PS4, I could see all the similarities and instantly loved it. I hope they eventually can make a sequel...though I'll admit I'd probably get it on XB1.
I hope so. It's one of the few games I wanted on the Xbone. Port this and Rare Replay, please.
Awesome game, it's too bad it didn't get better sales. I was completely on Insomniac's side in regards to wanting to keep the IP but going with MS as the publisher as opposed to one who would've wanted a PS4 version as well as the Xbox One version was utterly stupid. Hopefully it taught Insomniac a valuable lesson, its fanbase is on PlayStation. Still, I'd much prefer Insomniac's next game after Spider-Man to be another Ratchet & Clank, however. I'd say R&C, imo, is Insomniac's best IP, though we'll see what the Spider-Man team does, maybe that set of games will top R&C, though I doubt it.
I would definitely buy the sequel I really enjoyed the original on xbox one
Insomniac audience is on playstation, I hope insomniac make a new ratchet & clank rather than sunset overdrive though.
A remake for ratchet and clank game every 2 years sound good, just the main game, not the experimental one.
Sunset Overdrive was pretty fun, kinda took me a while to get used to its style though. Played some online missions with some friends was a blast too. I won't double dip for it if it comes to PS4.
@Ralizah
I doubt Rare Replay will ever get ported to any other console. I'm still hoping a new Battletoads game will be made, or Conker.
Meh, xbox can have s.o. well be good with nioh, horizon, gow 4, nier, and all the other exlusives we are getting this year and next.
@shonenjump86 I don't expect it to happen, but it would be nice, as those are the only two Xbone games I care about playing at all.
Sunset Overdrive looks fun, but by the time Spiderman is out (2018, imo) it would be time for a new Ratchet and Clank (2020, PS5 launch game?).
They've got to strike while the irons hot. We want more Ratchet and Clank!
It would be great to see Sunset Overdrive hit the PS4 (and Switch). It was a great game with a great sense of humor... well, I found it funny. Apparently not everyone did. But it's definitely one of my favorite XBOX One exclusive and more people should be able to try it.
the game is great! I got it cheap a while ago and its hilarous fun ^^ Id buy it again for PS4 just to Play it in 4k
@Star-Lord Agreed. The First Resistance was a gritty classic and the co-op on 2 was great fun. 3 sucked a bit. I always thought R4 was a no-brainer and was surprised when it didn't happen.
Wow, this is great news! Come on insomniac release the first one on PS4.
@Ralizah well Rare Replay will never happen because Microsoft OWN Rare, that would be like Uncharted being released on XB1
Sunset Overdrive though is another matter, depending on what kind of deal they had with MS of course
@FullbringIchigo Right. Like I said, fully not expecting it to happen.
If nothing else, though, I wish they would have released RR on PC. Makes me sad that I'll never get to play it because it's one of the very, very few Xbone exclusives.
Sunset Overdrive, along with Rare Replay and Raiden 5, were the only XBONE exclusives I actually enjoyed, and I would definitely liklike to sequel come over to the PS4. Though they better make the game a bit more challenging sin S.O. felt a bit easy (that, and I hope they make the story better).
Sunset Overdrive is fantastic. I bought an Xbox One for it (which I later sold) and it is amazing. I'd happily buy it again and it's a shame it didn't get the fanfare it rightfully deserves.
Two words sum up the experience for me: "PIGEON COMBO!"
Personally I wasn't all that impressed by Sunset Overdrive and wouldn't necessarily bother with a sequel regardless of which platform it released if they made one.
Its very much a R&C weaponry, meets Tony Hawks movement wrapped up in a Club 18/30's humour and acid dropping and cartoon visual style. It may sound great on paper but I found the characters weal, the story weak, the game-play grew boring quickly etc.
R&C works because it has 'charm' and doesn't try to mix to much together to create something 'different'. Resistance worked because it went for atmosphere but still stuck to pretty much 1 style - a 'serious'and dark FPS.
Sunset Overdrive has some good moments - like the respawn animations and some of the weaponry is very much over the top and fun (reminds me a bit of some of Dead Risings too) but overall the game isn't that great and certainly not as good as Resistance or R&C. I guess that's one reason why Sony didn't opt to back it despite being offered it first...
How about more Resistance instead?
Would like this, but would LOVE resistance 4. I feel there is unfinished business with that ip, and it would be a shame if the Vita game (enjoyable enough as it was) was the last we saw of the property.
First things first. Spiderman - make that as good as possible. Finally, it looks like there will be a game befitting the webslinger; been far too long since I could say that.
Then a brand new ratchet - not a remake - would be very welcome. Did insomniac indicate that into the nexus was the end of the 'future' series that started with tools of destruction? It seems like there is a strong market appetite for platformers atm, and arguably the ratchet remake came along at just the right time. They can build on this wave of interest with a new game. Yooka laylee and Crash already look set to be huge successes so I cant imagine that insomniac would want to be too far away from that pie
Its a great game, fun to play, and would love a sequel. Its a pity it didn't sell more. But regardless I would buy it on which ever platform it might release on.
Also, yes I would love a new Resistance game.
Would much rather have another Ratchet than Sunset...
Can I have a remaster of skitchin' instead
did nothing for me when I've had a crack at it so I wouldn't be interested in a sequel good to see that Insomniac still have PlayStation at heart though
I liked this game a lot when I briefly had an Xbone. I'd love to see a sequel!
Always interested but never tried it. Can't blame Insomniac for wanting the rights for their IP.
One of the more interesting Xbone exclusives, I certainly would buy a port of the first one if it ever graced the PS4.
@get2sammyb "arguably the biggest PS4 exclusive in the Japanese giant's portfolio: Spider-Man."
I think Kratos would like to argue that point with you. Maybe Joel and Ellie too.
I thought about purchasing this game, but I kind of lost interest after watching a few gameplay videos and I would get it on PS4 if it was below $30.
The only reason I still have an Xbox One is to play Rare Replay and Gears 3's multiplayer with bots. If both games were ever ported to PC, I would probably sell the Xbone in a heartbeat.
Would have to wipe the dust off first before repackaging it.
@rjejr Perhaps, but I still feel like Spider-Man is a more recognisable brand. Especially for non-gamers.
@JoeBlogs Minority maybe but certainly not alone. I wouldn't be as harsh on it as a lot of the people that bothered to write a 'negative' review but of the nearly 1200 people that wrote a review, 300 of them were also saying how boring and repetitive the game is, the constant fetch quests (go here, kill everything and bring back 'x' item). Its not just the users either as that is echoed in a lot of the reviews too.
The Telegraph - those looking for something filling and nutritious may feel short-changed by the gameβs adolescence and humdrum tasks.
Videogamer - Sunset Overdrive has some excellent ideas, but its triumphs are sadly suffocated beneath ultra-repetitive mission design and unsatisfying enemy encounters.
Digital Spy - This is not a revolution as far as open-world games go, it's more of a compendium of recognizable elements that have been twisted just enough to make them seem new and different for the uninitiated.
the Guardian - Sunset Overdrive never quite surpasses the chaotic physics of Just Cause, the coherent style of Blood Dragon or the assured sense of place of GTAV β nor does it manage to draw its story and systems toward a coherent, impactful point. The game itself does little to undermine the increasingly over-familiar, open-world establishment.
Games (TM) - It seems like it was made for an audience of gamers over a decade ago, brimming with try-hard references and cringe-worthy jokes.
Eurogamer (italy) - Sunset Overdrive is a fun shooter with a couple of interesting mechanics and a strong style, but the lack of variety is a major issue for the latest game from Insomniac.
Metro GameCentral - Shallow, simplistic, and never quite as funny as it thinks it is
Level7Nu - Unfortunately many of the missions feel like a chore, and both the city and especially the survivors are uninteresting.
X-One Magazine - ts best elements are subdued by a repetitious structure.
I could of added more but I think that gets the point across...
81 on Metacritic with a 7.7 User score. Maybe I am too old and outside the target audience...
@get2sammyb "Especially for non-gamers."
Buuuut, if they are non-gamers, why would they care about a Spiderman GAME?
Spiderman to me is one of those games people who own a PS4 might buy just to check it out, but GoW, TLoU, Uncharted, those are the games that make people choose a Sony console rather than MS or Nintendo.
@rjejr Now you're being pedantic. You know what I mean: there are people who play games that don't necessarily care about reading sites like Push Square, and Spider-Man will appeal to them.
@get2sammyb "and Spider-Man will appeal to them"
If you think so. To me super hero games, except for maybe Lego, are just the games people make fun of, not actually buy a system to play. Not saying it won't sell well.
Maybe you can do a poll - what PS4 game are people most looking forward to? Don't forget to add Dreams, even if I'm the only 1 who will pick it. Though I guess that goes against the whole "non-gamer" argument huh? Oh well, nevermind.
I looked for Spiderman games sales numbers and couldn't find one, GoW has sold over 20 million though, so I'm still not convinced Spiderman sells better than Kratos. Maybe if they release close together we'll get to find out?
@rjejr You can't compare Activision's rubbish, unmarketed Spider-Man games to a heavily marketed, first-party published one deloped by Insomniac Games.
I don't care anything about Halo, Forza, or KI. When I think about exclusives that the PS4 is poorer for not having, I think of Sunset Overdrive and wish that it would one day come to the Playstation.
I would buy this, day one.
A sequel to Fuse minus EA getting involved and a Resistance HD remaster collection would be great.
Now this is tasty news.
@get2sammyb oops, sorry, this one fell thru the cracks of my bottomless inbox but I still felt it worth addressing -

Your reply before that said:

You can't have it both ways. Yes, there are people who don't read sites like PS, no matter what color blue you use, and they are interested in Spiderman, BUT, those are the EXACT SAME PEOPLE who would NOT be able to tell the difference between an Activison Spiderman game and an Insomniac Spiderman game. So there are 2 groups of people - those who can tell the difference, ie gamers, and those who like Spideman, ie casuals. You can't take the positive from each half of your argument and try to make 1 positive whole. Gamers know the difference between devs, but casuals know Spiderman as bad super hero videogames.
I do think a Spiderman movie, no mater how bad, out performs a Kratos movie, but we're talking games, nto movies. It doesn't matter who the dev is for the casual Spiderman fan.
I got over Sunset Overdrive long ago. I feel I would like to see anything new from Insomniac Games other than that title on PS4.
@nathanSF I hated part 2, Platinumed 3 plus i loved part 1. π
@Flaming_Kaiser I played a helluva lot of R2 co-op. R1 4x split screen was great fun,
