YEAH BOY!!!
I said it elsewhere too but...
If Sonic 4 had new zone names, music, mechanics and based the aesthetics on past zones while also doing original ones like White Park and draws ire and complaints, why does Sonic mania get praise for new zones and straight up using old ones? I don't...confused.
Also @get2sammyb before you say "Because Mania is a good game", remember, the complaints determine the quality, the quality doesn't determine the complaints
@BLP_Software I think because this one plays like Sonic. Sonic 4 was such a weird game; the physics never felt right. This is literally indistinguishable to the Mega Drive games, and is what they should have done years ago.
@get2sammyb Sonic 4 played like Sonic as well. Sonic Rush in fact. Same physics even for rings (Yes, I'm talking about physics and Sonic, theres a target on my head now).
But that's not the complaint I referenced. One complaint, isolated from all gameplay, is that the zones "Werent original". So work that one out.
Then again people complained Sky Sanctuary wasn't yellow enough in Generations so....
@BLP_Software I remember Sonic 4 playing like absolute crap compared to the Mega Drive games.
@get2sammyb That's a separate complaint but yes it felt different. The only thing I like about the Sonic Rush physics is it makes Super Sonic bearable, since even in Episode 2 where it has its own physics, Super Sonic specifically can still stop on a dime in mid air which means for the first time ever, platforming as Super Sonic isn't a mess.
I just like the idea that fans are praising Mania for doing something 4 did that drew ire. It just strikes me as either changing times or they forget what made them rage in the first place.
Probably the latter, because as I said, people didn't like the look of Sky Santuary for being the wrong colour and having too much plant life.
It's a shame it'e been delayed. Can not wait, 25 year nostalgia-fest!
@BLP_Software You're trying to rationalise complaints from the Sonic fanbase. It's a losing battle.
@DerMeister Hey, its a fun past time. You know me, I like to try and logic and understand everything.
If we actually get a great Sonic out of this then it really will be best year in games
@BLP_Software I know the feeling. It's why I'm in a straightjacket and type with my nose.
@BLP_Software One complaint, isolated from all gameplay, is that the zones "Werent original". So work that one out.
The levels in Sonic Mania are mashups of the beloved 2d original megadrive games. So in that respect they are original. The quality of Sonic games and the level design since Sonic CD has varied between generic, downright nonsense and unplayable. Mania will rectify that, what better way than to take inspiration from the great level design of the 90s games?
@themcnoisy aannd that's what Sonic 4 did too. Only they gave them new names and music instead of just being Green Hill..again. And Flying Battery...again.
The Sonic fanbase confuses me XD
@DerMeister Strait Jacket? Sir I just bounce around a padded room and talk to unicorns.
Are the sprite sizes the same? It looks more detailed. Perhaps more colours than what the Genesis used.
Eh, Flying Battery was my least favorite zone in 3&K, so I can't say I'm really happy about this, but I'm sure Taxman and his crew will change things to make it more enjoyable.
This will sell best on vita... I mean switch, or is one or both exclusive? Didn't see any springs but I really hated the springs sound effect back when.
I always loved that stage.
Man the music take me back to my childhood
Brilliant. I was wondering what the next classic stage would be shown off, and it looks great. Love picking out the remixed elements.
@twenty90seven Exactly the same sprite size except we now have more viewing space on a widescreen tv! Obviously the sprites can be more detailed showcased by the drop sprint.
One thing I have noticed thus far; a lot of variety in how you move around the levels with a lot of backwards movement yet my favourite levels in Sonic are the ones you can blast straight through to the end super quick. Hopefully its evened out at release.
@themcnoisy What's interesting is that one of the main criticisms I recall seeing regarding later 2D Sonics (Sonic Rush, the Sonic Advance games) was that the levels were too reliant on just holding right, and excessive speed for the sake of speed.
There's definitely a balance to be found. What they've shown so far reminds me of the level design from the 16-bit games, with multiple paths through levels and not simply a beeline to the finish. There will definitely be faster moments, though, which are always great fun to speed through!
Look like fun but i will say it why not give the sprites a complete overhaul and levels keep them the same just upgrade the graphics.
