In case you missed them, Square Enix released some Final Fantasy VII Remake screenshots last month, and the presence of an ATB gauge got people especially excited. Why? Well, such a thing suggests that the battle system is somewhat turn based much like the original, but according to director Tetsuya Nomura, that isn't the case.
"Battles are not command-based, they're action-based," Nomura clarifies in an interview with Famitsu. He doesn't go into any detail, but the fact that he had to point that out speaks for itself. Hopefully we'll get more insight into how combat actually works in the near future.
Nomura also mentions the supposed cover system, which was shown off in another picture. "Regarding cover actions, there are places where they can be done on the map, but they are not required. Because it's seamless, I showed that there can be actions in response to various scenes," he explains. It sounds a bit like the cover in Final Fantasy XV, we suppose.

I prefer turn based, but if they manage to keep all those commands, summons etc and controling all the characters then I don't mind a lot.
I'm not angry. I'm just disappointed.
Sneak peak at the new theme song
I pretty much assumed it wasnt turn based from the gameplay trailer......
Good, turn-based is sooooo dated, in my opinion.
Fair enough, either battle system can be good or bad. As long as its good i dont care.
I'm disappointed. The battles in FFXV were easy if you just held attack and occasionally pressed a teammate command. I always preferred turn based, it has a lot more strategy to it.
My interest tanked when they announced the removal of turn-based originally. Turn-based and real time are apples and oranges, they're not really comparable. I like one, I don't like the other. It's a dealbreaker for me. It's a real shame, as I think that the majority of the nostalgia gamers for this particular game are likely to feel like something important is missing with the loss of the ATB. But hey, it'll still sell like crazy, so there's that for Square-Enix. Just won't sell to me.
The user interface looked exactly like Kingdom Hearts so this is not a huge surprise... I liked XV'S combat but I feel this will be an entirely different thing.
@Xaessya 😂 😂 😂
I would have thought they were going to have the option for a wait mode like FFXV. That's disappointing.
Let's pray that Square Enix haven't used the same battle engine as Final Fantasy XV. That had an awful, clumsy battle system. Keeping my thumb on an attack button isn't my idea of challenging strategy. I finished the game on the first play-through on the hardest difficulty dying only once (and that was by accident).
The original Final Fantasy VII... now there was a battle system! I do think a turn-based battle system is essential to the genre, as all live battle systems since FFXIII have taken something away from the series (in my opinion).
Please, don't be another button-basher! I'd buy Tekken if that's what I wanted!
If I wanna play turn based Final Fantasy VII, I'll just play the original. If it's similar to Kingdom Hearts or XV in terms of combat I'll be fine with it.
I didn't like the battle system in Kingdom Hearts. I think what (the original) fans were expecting was a similar game with today's console capabilities, bringing what could only be imagined in the 90's into reality.
I understand that the video game industry is evolving to accommodate several generations, but this is Final Fantasy, not Dynasty Warriors. It all feels very diluted.
not bothered really, let's be honest if you want to play FFVII with turn based battles then you can just play the original FFVII
times have changed and so has Final Fantasy, i want them to move forward not backwards (P.S i do still love turn based battle systems but i would rather the Remake be new and different and not just the same game with a fresh skin)
I'm ok with that. I tend to play games at night, and 20+ years of turn-based RPGs has worn on me, making them wonderful sleeping lullabys. Maybe I just need a less comfy chair....
I disagree with the whole concept of 'just play the original if you want a turn-based version of the game'. The idea is to remake the game with key elements, such as the story line, the materia system, breeding chocobos, etc. and I would have thought that the battle system was pretty integral. Otherwise, don't bother with a remake at all.
Too many open world hack and slash games at the moment. The only recent game that I believe to have had a decent live action battle system was the Witcher 3. That said, I'll have to reserve judgement until we have more information about it.
Didn't they say from the start the combat system will be more akin to FFXV than FFVII or did I just dream/assume that? To be honest, despite loving FFVII, I am really not hyped for this remake as I feel they can only soil the game's name and not improve upon it. I'd be happy to be proven wrong however.
I'll watch the game play trailers nearer the time. If it's FFVII with the FFVX engine, I'll be giving it a wide berth. I agree with Dichotomy; I was hyped until I saw that it was live combat.
No way am I getting this on release anymore after FFXV, that game was fun while I played it but on reflection afterward's it wasn't good enough, I expected to be playing it for age's. This even more so now with live combat sound's like a FFXV version of FFXII (which I loved) and that's a big no no for me. I'l wait and see but there is NO hype from me for this game anymore, not just because of the live combat I already new about that, it's simply down to FFXV the combat in that sucked, you couldn't lose it was harder to die than it was to stay alive.
It will most probably be like the battle system in FFXV which is a shame for me personally because I didn't like what I played in the demos.
I like both
I always expected a FF15-esque combat system, unfortunately. Don't really understand why an ATB gauge would be there if it's all action combat, though.
Still getting the first volume at launch. I love the original too much to miss this.
Whilst this is disappointing it's not entirely unexpected, FFXV's battle system was fun if a bit unrefined on occasion and if this is a refinement of that then this should be good. I just hope they do the summons correctly and fix the magic so that you don't kill yourself all the time, most importantly there better be a cross dressing section or I won't be happy
I've been expecting something along the lines of Crisis Core as it is, just with more characters. World of Final Fantasy is my ATB fix for now, but hope springs eternal that FFXVI might return to something like Paradigm Shift which remains my favourite battle system in the flagship titles.
Gutted, I bought a PS4 and pre-booked FF7 purely for this remake, if I can't enjoy the battle system it will ruin a lot of the game, so the extra padded out story better be something awesome, and the new battle system had better be something really special...
@NoxAeturnus My sentiments exactly, but I've now bought a PS4 and pre-ordered...
Is CyberConnect2 not apart of the remake? If so the combat will be mental and solid AF if Naurto Ninja Storm is anything to go by
If it is like the battle system in FF15 then I'll be okay. Only they need to improve the magic/elementa for this one as it played a big part in the original. Didn't really use magic in FF15 and didn't really die.
The turnbased / action argument has raged for years.
If there's no strategy then both become boring. If strategy is important they can both be great. One is not better than the other, for every bayonetta fan a disgaea fans around the corner. Persona fans - next door someone's sat on Mario. FIFA getting hammered by my kids, I'm buying a player on footy manager. Its all about strategy.
I'm all about the turn based so this remake is now off my purchase list.
Still playing through the original FFVII, Bravely Second ,Pokemon S&M and 3 Fire Emblems, so I've got my turn based fix sorted for a good wee while. 😂
Just finished the original FFVII (again) on Steam to whet my appetite for this one. As I keep saying, I am dubious with this battle system. It's like FFXV cotton-pads the next generation of video gamers. Awful battle system! I also hope that we can rotate between characters.
Just a thought... perhaps the ATB in the remake is a sort of 'timer', in the sense that you play as one character until the ATB runs out and then it defaults to the next character? That would make sense and this would keep the strategy element within the game.
Food for thought.
"It's all about turn-based... 'bout turn-based,
No live fights."
Por que mierda me borraron el comentario?
Battle system in Final Fantasy XV is bad, make a Game Over is impossible. turn based is not only from past, nowadays a lot of games are using this system and are great, like Persona. Fans want Remake FF7 no FF15 with Cloud.
The more I hear and see of this game the more disappointed I become.
I would have just loved an updated look to FFVII.
I thought this was already comfirmed. It's this fact that kills the game for me, I'll just return to the original instead thanks.
@samwisemeek I'm sorry, but these remakes aren't purely for fan service. They're, in large part, meant to also draw in new fans, who'll give the series a chance just because of the reputation that FFVII has in the gaming industry, who are on the younger side and who don't have a shred of nostalgia for FFVII (or older games), and thus won't give the old one a try. As such, while of course there's differing opinions regarding this in all walks of gamer life, I think most contemporary gamers prefer active combat to turn-based combat.
I personally don't mind either one of these types of combat, and if it's like Kingdom Hearts, then it'll still be good, because KH employs a system that's kind of a cross between the two, in that you still fight through commands and have different summons and spells etc that you scroll to, but with just the added layer of being able to position yourself.
But tl;dr: the game is meant to bring in new fans as much as appease old ones, and this is MOSTLY on the shoulders of its story, characters, atmosphere, music; its presentation, in other words. I'm sure they did some sort of research into the sales figures of old Final Fantasies and recent trends in whether gamers more widely prefer active or turn-based combat. Also, as somebody who played FFVII myself as a young'un, I appreciate the story and the atmosphere and the exploration more than the combat which, let's be honest, turned really dull at some point, with all the trash mobs constantly interrupting the flow of exploration. Only bigger (and story) fights were enjoyable later on.
@Fraught I agree to an extent; yes, draw in new fans but the point really is that the battle system (in my opinion) of the series generally is weaning towards live action hack-n-slash. I get that it's a 'remake', not a 'makeover', but for me, this is changing something so fundamental that it's a complete turn-off.
I suppose it's very similar to what happened with the Resident Evil series; the series shifted from 'survival-horror puzzle-solving' to 'arcade-action button-masher'. Fortunately Capcom saw the error of their ways and salvaged the series with REVII, but from an interesting FP mode, a different dynamic but the elements of the earlier series back in place.
Being 'the same but different' is fine, but taking away the very basics that made the genre popular in the first place could be a detriment to existing fans, but there will always be someone who likes it, but time will tell. I'm okay with the game being episodic due to the scale of the game.
Well, switching between characters (i.e. Cloud and Barret) have been confirmed, as well as material being used as a 'skill':

FFVII is my favourite game but people need to stop pretending that, outside of some boss battles, combat was any more complex than hammering X to repeatedly select "Attack".
Button-bashing was common-place for farming, but everything else was pretty much tactical. I've just finished the game again about three weeks ago and I pretty much used magical attacks rather than attack commands.
@NoxAeturnus Same here i'll never buy another final fantasy game as long as their not turn based, They took one of the best things the game had to offer and ruined it in hopes it would make them more profitable.
@FullbringIchigo Keeping the X button pressed is the way forward?
A ....."REMAKE" should only be to enhance the graphics and load times of a game. Not change the way you play the game. Most FF fans, like 99% of us, enjoy turn based combat because its AWESOME. Whoever decided to change one of the most iconic RPG's battle system should be dragged into the street and be beaten with a pool noodle....lol.
Seriously though...I will not be buying the FFVII remake because....well....let's face it....its not really a remake now since ONE of most important parts to an RPG has been totally changed.
P.S. someone please tell the FF folks to bring back turn based combat in future FF titles.
