I think the Playstation 4 console is an excellent machine now
After the initial "Wheyy!!" of the boost mode news I quickly realised it'd be of little benefit to me since I don't tend to replay my old games that much and those I do want to replay I do in part because they ran well to begin with. Other than Evil Within I can't think of a game that ran badly that I still want to play. And then, moving forward, the majority of games will have a Pro patch anyway. So for me the benefits of the boost mode, while welcome, are pretty limited.
Never been fussed about external drives, 500gb was a bit tight but 1tb on the Pro is fine for me. I've no reason to keep everything installed to be honest.
Not wanting to sound cynical, the update has some great features for a lot of people. It's just that, like folders, it's not something I care about.
The sad thing is you know with PS5 all this stuff will be missing at launch and they will spend 5 years patching it in.
Love the custom backgrounds though, was getting a bit tired of the FF7 one! At least now there's a reason to use the photo modes in games.
@Bhattiboy I thought that since day 1. It's the best console ever made, IMO.
@kyleforrester87 Hey Kyle
I agree there was allways the i'm running out of space issue with me not so much Game installs it was the updates and patches was feeding into my internet juice that resolved I am a happy chap now.
The first vote is a difficult one for me. I think that my vote would fall between 'loving it' and 'good, but nothing amazing'. The External HDD has been long overdue so its more of a relief than anything else and its not like other consoles haven't been able to offer that for a while now. Boost mode is a welcome option too and addresses one of my criticisms of the Pro at launch, that you have all that power under the hood and a lot of games still run just as 'poorly' as they did on my PS4 when they could be improved.
As for Activity Feeds, if I could permanently remove that I would!! Custom Wallpapers will NEVER be used by me, I much prefer my 'Dynamic Themes' and I couldn't care less about my Profile 'colour' - more gimmick than functional. The Notifications has taken a backwards step too.
As someone who ONLY games on my Pro, the only thing I am interested in is things that benefit me as a gamer. The External HDD support, meaning I can ALWAYS access ALL my games without having to constantly juggle them or delete 'something' just to be able to update and play a game and Boost mode that makes 'older' games better to play if/when I return to them is the only things that I like and wanted.
As for future updates, I can't think of anything specific at the moment - return to the older Notification option would be a start but nothing particular springs to mind...
I still find it mind boggling that they haven't sorted out changing your PSN ID. Not that I want to, but there's so many people out there screaming for it, they should really look into that.
I love the external HD!
I'm really enjoying the PSVR's ability to view 3D Blu Rays. I only watched a few minutes of Days of Future Past last night but I really enjoyed it. Yeah, the 24hz framerate is tough but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
I've never been able to see 3D movies the way others seem to. Same with those old Magic Eye thingies. I guess my eyes just don't work that way. Whenever I've tried to watch any 3D movie I can see what things are supposed to be 3D but I see two of them. The more things are supposed to pop out, the worse it gets--I get terrible headaches from it. With the headset I'm finally able to see 3D films the way I suppose others do.
@DrClayman I'm sure it's that they can't do it. The way their back end is set up most likely doesn't support that.
Having the external Harddrive support is what made this update the best so far for me. I don't have a Pro so boost mode wasn't a big deal for me and I am not big on customizing wallpapers and such.
Now just fix the notifications and everything will be ok with this update Sony.
I'm really enjoying the custom wallpapers. I already have an image similar to this one as my background:

Though mine looks nicer, just sayin'. Hahaha. I changed the system color to dark blue and it just looks gorgeous.
I haven't tried boost mode yet but I'll get around to it. I haven't played The Witcher 3 or Bloodborne yet so I'm really looking forward to that!
@DrClayman The only reason that makes sense for them not allowing that is to keep trolls and such from consistently changing their ID.
Gotta get an external hard drive asap! I'm so tired of having to delete games just to try a new one out. My PSVR has been collecting dust for months because I simply have no room to even download demos.
After all the great games that have been coming out past two months the external hd was a plus now I don't have to worry about deleting and reinstalling the older games I still play. The background that was great since I capture a few great pictures on horizon
Boost Mode & External Hard Drive has made this firmware worth it, the other features are very welcome too.
3D PSVR is what I wanted but liking what I have tried of boost mode too.
Just let me change my PSN ID though!!
I like it a lot. Earth Defence Force ran flawlessly at 60fps as I played, and screen tearing has disappeared in Lords of the Fallen. I see many improvements and I couldn't be happier.
I don't have a Ps4 Pro or an external hard drive to really dig into the big features. And I'm too busy playing Nier Automata to try out anything else. So I don't have many thoughts on it at the moment. I don't even know why I commented really.
Wasn't particularly fussed about external HD support to begin with, my PS4 has 2tb internally with loads of space left. As for boost mode, I only have games which are already pro-enhanced installed on my PS4 pro, so it's not really useful at the moment. The only thing about the update that has impacted me is the new notifications section which is absolutely awful.
i'd like to see cross saves between my consoles..so if i play titanfall 2 on my ps4 pro i can finish on that console and seemlessly carry on on my second console without having to manually upload then down load...i can only log in to one at a time so surely i can't cheat or do anything untoward..be nice to pick up and play wherever i am from where i left off..
I can think of one thing, they really need to organize better the Library "app". I mean, if I want to download a game I bought, I need to scroll through every single thing I "bought" from PSN, why not sort things into games, DLCs, themes, apps, etc? =)
That said, I really enjoy the external HDD support, since I went full digital this gen, well done, Sony!
I've been playing Just Cause 3, and I've barely noticed any slowdown! So this update gets an A+ in my book! I also tried Sniper Elite 3, and it seems to hold the 60 fps mark more consistently.
@renankj I'm really starting to regret not going full digital because Disc games still install like 50 GB of data on your HDD anyway. And I have to swap discs out all the time.
please bring old notification back including separate tabs like download, invite, upload. i don't like new notificaiton are mix together
Just downloaded, I installed cod advanced warefare last week to test on as I remember muliplayer being a choppy nightmare. It played flawlessly and I was so much better got a 22/2 first game. With a machine gun running around. So seems to work well for me, think I'm going to try drive club or battlefield 4 next. Then I guess back to the new games
I'm happy with the new update. Funny thing is, as much as I was anticipating HDD support and boost mode, I'm really liking the custom wallpapers.
Also I'm getting used to the new notification menu the more I mess with it.
It took entirely too long (being generous) to get external harddrive support but it's here and now I'm a happy camper. I think this is probably the best PS4 update thus far. Not sure I'll use the second most important feature, boost mode, as I'm still on a standard 1080p tv so there isn't much point to a PS4 Pro, but that's cool for those who can take advantage. I might fuss around with other stuff. The only 'complaint' is that the notification system is now meh but that's about as minor a detail as there is so it's not a big deal.
External HDD support is a good thing but not something I personally need as I already have a 2tb drive. Boost mode again is good but should've been a Pro launch feature.
The thing Sony have done majorly wrong though is to dumb down the notification menu. It was perfect before & now it just doesn't make sense. Why, Sony?
The one feature I'm STILL waiting on though is the ability to disable the 'players you may know' section on the friends list. Why not put it at the bottom where it's unobtrusive?
On the whole, besides boost mode & external HDD support, it's ANOTHER pointless update!
Why oh why did they ruin the notifications?!
Good update apart from that. Hopefully they'll change it back.
I guess I'd like this update more if I had a Pro for boost mode...
Great update! I was never one to use photo mode in games, but now I will. Boost mode is awesome because I have alot of older games I need to play. External HDD support is a very welcome addition, my pro is already full. To those who say "other consoles already have these features" I say well too bad the other consoles suck...
Great update with external hdd as my favorite feature. The notification is a mess though, the old one is better. I just want to see all of my download in one tab without going to sub menu like in the new notification tab.
Loving the custom Wallpapers. I can finally use my great Witcher 3 sunset shots. External HD is nice, but I have a 2t HD in my system so won't be a problem for awhile.
I like the way they have made it really simple to upload game saves to the cloud now if you're not on the primary console. Now it's just an option on the game screen rather than going thought the console settings
It's a good update, a little late and I hate the "tell people what you are thinking" addition but that's a personal thing between me and FB shudder I hate that site, but overall a good update.
i think it's great, apart from the Notifications list, why sony changed that is beyond me because it was fine as it was
Custom wallpapers. Geralt's holiday snaps are all over my profile and I'm loving it.
They need to revert the notifications part, and I would also like to have game playing time ala Nintendo 3DS, and aslo would like to have the possibility to use wallpaper from USB stick.
