Ah, the PlayStation 3. The last-gen machine launched over a decade ago in Japan, and even after the PlayStation 4 hit the market, it was still shifting units. Over the last couple of years, however, things have slowed dramatically; once the PS4 hit its stride in the East, PS3 sales fell off a cliff. With that in mind, it perhaps comes as no surprise to hear that Sony is finally killing the old console off.
The company has announced that shipments of the 500GB standard model - the only model still being produced in Japan - will soon come to an end. Rest in peace.

Goodbye my good friend.... (in japan!)
TEN YEAR PLAN.
The irony that you see a Super Slim PS3 and while it lost it's George Foreman usefulness, it's still a very efficient bludgeoning weapon because it may be called Super Slim, but that's only true when compared to what came before it. Its still a big ass brick.
The PS3 had a good run. I enjoy my Slim one (And my gf still has her OG one, god knows how she afforded that at launch) and while the hardware is capable, I guess my only complaint is the PSN Store crashes for some unholy reason and the quality of a lot of third party offerings could've been up to snuff.
But that aside its my Sonic and R&C machine....just like my PS4 is a R&C machine....which means my PS5 will be....I don't know but I lose a franchise or two each generation.
We all knew this day would come.
Rest in Peace Giant Enemy Crab.
Personally, at the moment I'm foregoing the new releases and concentrating on enjoying running through the Naruto Ultimate Storm Trilogy.I just got after originally thinking it was just a one on one beat em up setup. Real nice way to review the story before the anime concludes. Aside from that, I still feel it has a lot of life left in it. I keep a lot of my music and all my band and personal music recordings on it as it seems more personable than storing them on a pc. I still think it's a better console than the ps4.
It took a while to kill off the PS2 as well if I remember right.
I've enjoyed PS3 very much. While I did sit out the highs and lows (aside from getting the $600 model years ago and it barely last a year), the games are so good to play.
So many good times in the past with my PS3. I remember walking into the Gamez store (before the town had a Gamestop) and buying the phat PS3 with Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet in the summer of 2008. Still have that copy of MGS4 (Littlebigplanet was traded in for the GoTY edition, still have that).
While waiting for the PS4 Pro to be released this past fall and having my original PS4 have disc drive problems, I decided to play and plat Okami HD on the PS3. Good times.
Still alive here, in my house.
sometimes go back playing Dragon's Dogma, old Tales of series, Vanquish or Ninokuni
Born before the Wiiu and killed off after it. Something something quote about no parent outliving their child, blah blah.
I still remember buying ps3 after the $300 slim come out with metal gear solid 4 and valkyria chronicles as my first & second game, after that little big planet and infamous, good times
Well, my PS3 is still strong for my family...tons of movies downloaded (84 total), lots of tv episodes (too many to count) and a ton of game downloads from the store that's PS1, PS2, PS3 and indie (over 300 to count). Many trophies (which sadly, it takes forever to sync) and many retail games too (we gathered over 200 retail). Sad to see it end, but it's had its run! We still play Buzz on it once in a while (and of course Sing Star and Hot Shots Golf), and still own Wonderbook, Rock Band accessories, Move Accessories, the camera, DJ Hero Turntables and Guitar Hero Guitars...never going to get rid of it, but have started to dig into the retail games a little to get some stuff on PS4...other than that, it was a great system! Shame I traded in the original heavy model (it was pretty), but glad for the second model and definitely glad for the 2TB internal I installed into it. Underrated system that had amazing games, great NEW franchises and a ton of greatness!!! Plus...we had Kevin Butler do some commercials for us!!!
While i find it hard to still play my fat 80 but its still very much alive. As is my slim PS2 i dont play. PS4 gets all my love today. Learning this I may look for a new slim to buy and hold on to. I never liked all this BC stuff to me playing on the original console is very much a part of great old games!!
Maybe now we'll finally get PS3 backwards compatibility with PS4 instead of that streaming crap. Seriously though the PS4 not having backwards compatibility with any PS3 game is a huge oversight in my opinion.
@AlwaysGreener PS4 will never be backwards compatible with PS3. PS3 used a cell and PS4 doesn't.
After the start it had, I wouldn't have predicted a run until 2017.
@Tasuki Oh yeah, I forgot the PS3's complex Cell Processing. Though very impressive for it's generation, it's achilles heel was it's complicating programming. It's a shame that'll never be backwards compatible, since it had a pretty good library, but there's no sense crying over spilled milk, it had a good run and that's all that counts, thank you for responding, cheers.
There were 2 500GB super slims for $150 at Walmart last December and i regret not buying one. I week later both were gone.
I played the 360 more, but I still had some good times with the PS3. It will always be my Yakuza and Uncharted machine.
(In my best Adam Jensen voice) Yeah rip.
Rip PS3, I had many good times with you.
Still have my PS3 as a media player and occasional minecraft platform for my daughter, what a great machine had many hundreds of hours of fun, still "borrow" it from time to time to play old classics like Red Dead redemption but my PS4 is the one getting all my love now
I never had a PS3, was a 360 person (when gaming had kind of dropped to a secondary interest to me) but I was always impressed about how its fortunes got turned around later in its life. By the end, I was very jealous of the library and was one of the key reasons I went PS4. It had a very interesting lifespan.
Well it won't be completely dead to me until they switch the servers off.
The wife and I both have one, great for free multiplayer GTA V, Farcry 4, Dead Island, etc
@JoeBlogs
I can't remember the last game that I was actually bothered about on plus for ps3. At this point I'm downloading them more because I'm an incurable hoarder rather than building my collection in a meaningful way!
@JoeBlogs It was honestly a big part of my decision to move to PS4 (and the same for a fair few friends), as well as how Sony launched the PS4. So for me, I've loved getting into games like TLOU and UC Collection.
I would love to add a PS3 to my collection but my wife would kill me. ALready got waaay too many systems in the house now.
Production had to end someday.
The real problem comes when they stop online functionality and we can't download patches, dlc and games themselves. Hopefully that never comes.
PS1 - 1994-2005
PS2 - 2000-2013
PS3 - 2006-2017
PS4 - 2013-20??
Actually following that pattern would suggest that PS5 comes out in 2018, as a few have predicted.
The PS3 turned out to be a brilliant games console in the end. Sad to see it go. But some things on it were dreadful like the PS Store is (still) dreadfully SLOW :-/ + downloading things is a massive PAIN on it to still :-/ But at the end of the day it had some brilliant games for it which is why I will always trust SONY to deliver each Gen
I have three PS3, so I guess I'm set. One is still in in the box.
Was only $150 at Target on markdown (Destiny bundle) about 6 months ago.
I use my main PS3 as a movie player, so I'm worried about laser going out.
The PS3 was a terrible console I'm glad Sony learnt from their mistakes as we got a far better system all round in the PS4.
The PS3 was an amazing console, We got a really crappy console to replace it.
Phew! For a moment I thought they pulled the plug for PSN support on the PS3 in Japan My whole game backlog briefly flashed before my eyes...
@Imagremlin I might grab a cheapie, EB Games are loaded with super cheap second hand games.
@GBMatthew A lot of my favourite games where on the PS3 so it was a great console for me. Valkyria Chronicles, Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain, The Last of Us, Uncharted and so many more.
I've got two of em atm hopefully in 10 years time I can sell em and retire. 😎
Shadow of Colossus. That's the game I will miss playing when my ps3 conks out... Oh well, that's what PS Now is for...
@Flaming_Kaiser Good for you but I still think that it was the worst console Sony has made and woeful in operation and execution.
@RedMageLanakyn The Wii was discontinued earlier than the PS2
@Rudy_Manchego remind her that if she can have 75 pairs of shoes in the closet then you should be able to own a PS3! Smuggle it in bro. I smuggle them in when she ain't home and hook them up and she doesn't know the difference. I also remind her when she's in the mood for a good movie that the game systems provide a lot more new releases than a Netflix or amazon!
Still got my launch day 60G fat PS3 which of course plays ps2 and ps1 discs and have a truckload of downloaded games on it as well. Too bad the hard drive wasn't larger...
@joey302 Ha - I'm afraid she is too canny for that. It turns out that she listens to me when I talk gaming and notices if something appears on the shelf. Plus, she isn't a very material person, never buys lots of shoes. Plus, I just got the Switch and she was delighted!
@Rudy_Manchego ah see the difference seems to be is your wife is into gaming...my wife is not. She hasn't played a game since Snes Tetris! Lol if I showed her my Sega Saturn and told her it was the PS4 lol I'd get away with it!!
@joey302 Ha ha- maybe you got the better deal. My wife doesn't play much but seems to pay attention to what I buy. Darn it.
I wasn't a big PlayStation fan until I got a PlayStation 3 back in 2007. Only cost me 600euro! Madness I know. I've had a slim since and believe it or not I've a brand new 500gb super slim unopened packed away in case I ever need it. I picked it up miraculously for 115euro recently.
That's how much I love the ps3. Legendary console.
