This probably won't mean a huge deal to many of you, but for some, this news will no doubt come as a relief. We admittedly know very little about Final Fantasy VII Remake - there are still countless elements that haven't been explained or shown - but it at least seems like you won't be forced to control Cloud at all times.
In an interview with Famitsu - as translated by Gematsu - comments from director Tetsuya Nomura suggest that you can switch between party members. When talking about the first boss fight against the Guard Scorpion, Nomura says "Rather than just ending it at that scaffold, we've made wide use of the space and developed a battle that takes advantage of the map's characteristics where you'll fight while switching between Cloud and Barret."
"For example, when there's an enemy in a position that can't be reached by Cloud's sword, it's more effective to switch to Barret. It's becoming strategic in that way, as well," he continues. Recently, Nomura clarified that the Remake would be "action-based" rather than turn based, so it sounds like switching between heroes during battle may be the best way to emerge victorious, depending on the situation.

Sorry for the off-topic but have you not started Horizon @ShogunRok? What gives? It's right up your alley.
Sounds good to me that positioning will make a difference so switching is not only viable but necessary sometimes. What I am worried about is what the other AI-controlled characters would be doing in the meantime? I hope some kind of gambit system will be introduced to manage their AI that you can actually tweak.
That's good! But my main concern with the battles is how it will handle all the options that the original gave, summons, commands, spells etc.
I wish we could of done this in FF15
@Splat I'm too busy with... other... games!
Pretty sure it would be an option, but it's nice we got more info pretty quickly.
We are in the age where you have to make announcements that you can play as other characters in the party and that there will be a single player campaign.
Tactics? hahaha, purple materia; LONG RANGE and you don't need switch.
@Melucine You mean all those other options that you generally used to just ignore as you hammered X to attack over and over and over and over again? Or did you start every battle by casting wall and reflect on your team, a bit of regen and haste to buff them, then stop on the enemies before using steal on them all, poison to weaken them, manipulate to get them attacking one another and deathblow to finish? No? No, you just hammered X to attack then used Cure all from the menu afterwards like the rest of us didn't you
OMG you just said Switch!
@kyleforrester87 I mean all the options that were part of the game to help you fight higher level enemies.
@Melucine lol I do get what you mean but I'm doing a FF7 play through at the moment and I'm generally spamming attack/cure and Knights of the Round. I think they can easily implement elemental attacks (fire/ice/bolt) and some white magic + summons, along with your command and support materia (which would essentially act like perks that would always be active in the background, you'd manage this outside of combat) into a real time combat system. Couple that with the potential to freeze the combat to select certain specialist skills (steal/manipulate/mime or whatever) and you're laughing.
I think it can work just fine.
@kyleforrester87 I didn't not say that they can't do it, Kingdom hearts did it years ago. I am just curious to see how.
@Melucine Yup, will be interesting to see. Personally I expect them to scale it back somewhat, but that's not a big deal to me as so many abilities went unused anyway.
I just wanted a full remake of final fantasy 7. No changes other than new shiny graphics. The game was perfect as is. But im sure they will do a great job with this.
Well this means the whole section with Tifa/Cid will be playable at least. I liked that section because it showed how attached you'd become to Cloud and it was weird without him for a while.
Sounds interesting. The original in HD is there on PSN for those who want to play it, I am OK with modern elements, just hope they get them right
Character switching sounds lovely.
@finalstan my thoughts exactly
@Pinkman Tot be fair i love FF7 but this new gameplay sounds great. FF7 just the same is pointless for me. Then they would have tot add new content for me to buy it again. Summons with new story parts.
but you can't Final Fantasy VII on Switch
Yawn. Square is a victim of their own success.
