Call of Duty: WWII has been announced by Activision, which would be a surprise if it hadn't already leaked months ago. Rather than actually showcase the title, the publisher has instead plumped up for a countdown clock on the franchise's official website. All will be revealed proper at 18:00 BST on 26th April.
The game's being developed by Sledgehammer Games this time around, who previously worked on the well-received Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The developer's been teasing a return to the franchise's roots, which seems welcome after the good-but-a-bit-derivative sci-fi thrills of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

@TrueAssassin86x Because it's what the fans have been asking for.
Just wait to for them to cock it all up with an alternate ww2. Jet packs and transforming robot tanks for all!!
@Tasuki @TrueAssassin86x Call of Duty has a three year development cycle now. They were working on this long before Battlefield 1 was announced.
I am so glad COD is going back to WWII especially after all that bunny hopping & sci-fi crap, i wonder if it'll have its own Zombies Mode like Sledgehammer did last time or something new?
@get2sammyb Yeah I know. That's why I said it had nothing to do with BF1. It was more then likely a plan by Activision. They probably told each studio Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer games that they next 3 (after Ghosts) were going to be futuristic shooters with advanced movement and let them come up with their games. AW, BO3, and IW since at that time Sci-fi shooters were the rage with Titanfall, Destiny and Halo 5 coming out that time.
If any game had an influence on CoD, I would say Titan Fall since it was created by ex IW employees. Once Activision saw them moving into the advanced movement and sci-fi element it probably scared them and they thought that alot of their CoD player base would go to them out of loyalty to the developers. I don't blame them as TF was hailed as the CoD killer for a time.
However that plan backfired by Activision and as you said with the development cycle of CoD games being every 3 years it's hard to just scrap everything and start over.
I can't believe that I may be interested in COD this year lol. It will still feel like COD though because of the whole eSports scene and we know that DLC and eSports come first for Activision. Still keeping my eye on this...Maybe.
I've played Call of Duty since PS2 days and bought every one since. I've yet to play Infinite Warfare mainly because what they've done with MWR has wound me up too much.
So lets see how much it really goes 'back to it's roots' I want more than a time period.
@Tasuki Personally I would take their studios and do three CoDs in complete different settings. Sledgehammer get WW2, Treyarch get contemporary settings and Infinity Ward get far future sci fi. It would make each Cod more distinct.
@Tasuki Sorry, was responding to the other guy really.
So they played out WW2 years ago, tried some modern games, then played out futuristic, and now back to WW2. I'd love to see an honest effort made at another modern shooter, i'm done with WW2.
nice.cod world at war is the best call of duty ever.
Call of what?
Never heard of it, mate...😋
Never been as good since modern warfare 2
@RedMageLanakyn You do realize that CoD has had more post WWII games then WWII games right? Only 4 WWII compared to 9 Post.
@get2sammyb No worries man.
@adf86: That would be so awesome, that way everyone is happy.
@Tasuki I wasn't really counting them, I just know that after COD3 and MOH, it was time to stop. And just because they "only made 4" it doesn't mean they need to go back and do it again. Do you really want to see hot pink skins on old weapons? Because that's where we're headed.
WW2 hype hype hype!
I would like them to go to theatres or battle that are rarely or never touched.
@RedMageLanakyn They don't necessarily NEED to go back to WW2, but then they don't exactly NEED to go back to futuristic or modern again either. It just makes sense to go back to WW2 because it's been almost 10 years since the last game.
@get2sammyb According to Amazon it seems PS4 owners are getting content 30 days early again.
Well we all knew this series was creatively bankrupt anyway.
This could go either way for me. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it, as moving away from modern/futuristic settings may be just what Call of Duty needs. I hope they take some risks with this game, by which I mean give us a story that isn't just explosion after explosion, and for goodness sake, change up the multiplayer.
@adf86 That's no surprise, they said with IW that it was a multi year deal.
Look deeply on his eyes... I can see the word: GIVE ME MONEY
Come on! Just stop publishing call of duty for one year
P.s: is that the real name of game? WWII? What? Huh?
If the single player story is good like battlefield 1, I'm in. I enjoyed sledgehammer games previous work, I do hope the game last more than battlefield 1 single player though, 7-8 hour seems right.
Why don't devs ever tackle Vietnam? Is it because it was a terrible result for the US and they'd prefer to forget about it?!
actually there are 9 CoD games set in WW2 (well 8, and an expansion).
Call of Duty
Call of Duty : United Offensive
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 3
Call of Duty : World At War
Call of Duty : Finest Hour
Call of Duty : Big Red One
Call of Duty : Roads To Victory
Call of Duty : Final Fronts
returning to WW2 is a massive step backwards imo.
@dodoo - sledgehammer had a game in development based in vietnam, but it was cancelled when infinity ward had the mass exodus during development of MW3, and sledgehammer (and raven) were drafted in to help them finish it.
@leucocyte Ah ok thanks for the info. Shame they didn't get to finish it. Would make a welcome change of setting/era etc. I imagine it being a bit like playing the film Platoon! (maybe with slightly better language though!)
