Digital Foundry is back with yet another graphical comparison video, this time taking a look at Persona 5 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. It's safe to say that the vast majority of players will have bought the game on Sony's latest home console, but it's still interesting to see how the last-gen version shapes up - especially since Persona 5 was primarily made for the PS3 in the first place.
Those of you who have played Persona 5 will know how smoothly it runs on PS4. Although the title opts for 30 frames per second instead of 60, it rarely, if ever, drops a frame. The PS3 version, meanwhile, manages to stick close enough to its target, but it does see some very slight dips here and there. Of course, the PS4 version also has a higher resolution at 1080p.
At first glance there's not much difference at all between the two versions, and that's really to be expected of a game that was developed with the PS3 in mind. However, the last-gen edition does run into some pretty noticeable screen tearing on a regular basis, and its load times are a little longer across the board.

Bummer it's not a higher resolution on Pro. I know this has been batted around so I can't even remember if it's something that they actually promised or not, but wasn't the mandate for ALL new PS4 games to have Pro benefits? Or was that just something people misinterpreted? The game looks fine, but if they ironed out those jaggies with a 4k mode it'd look deh-eh-eh-ecent.
@kyleforrester87 It's because Persona 5 launched in Japan before the PS4 Pro, so they can get away with it.
@kyleforrester87 I also think that it was all first party games were mandated, but I may be wrong.
I'm a PS4 player, but one area where I am impressed with persona 5 is the load times. The whole game is very snappy.
It is a shame it doesn't support 4k, but honestly it looks fantasic on my 4k set even at 1080p30 so I'm not too worried. The fast loading times are a godsend with this kind of game though.
@ShogunRok Ah, makes sense then. There are still games releasing, mind you, such as Yooka-Laylee, but I suppose @ztpayne7 is right regarding it being a first party requirement. Guess it can't be expected of even the indie devs after all.
@kyleforrester87 Indie dev or AAA, they should be fully supporting it now - expecially when, in most of the common engines, there is simply a switch to enable support and the devs just have to choose to bump the framerate, resolution or distribute for performance.
the Yooka-Laylee team are lazy - they didn't bother giving it support and should have been called out by Sony for this - just look at Artfix Mundi games (hidden object games) - they come to the PS4 every few weeks and they have full Pro support for higher resolutions so a game that raised over $3m should have come with support as well.
In this games case though - any game that is supposedly released in any region before the pro doens't require a patch - A few of the koei games for example which were out in Japan then here after the pro release, never got patched - neither did Yakuza Zero.
Bought the ps4 version since I already sold my ps3 about 2 year ago.
PS4 version but still own a PS3, well i keep all my games & consoles there is just no way on earth i would sell anything i own. Its like Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5-2.5 Final Remix a hell of a lot faster loading times, especially over the PS3 counterparts.
Didn't buy it at all.
Dont plan too either, untill I pick it up used.
I got enough to play on the ps3 and 4.
So I popped in my P5 disc earlier, so it would install for tonight, and there was no installation or updates.....
Does the game run fully off the disc? I can't remember a single game in recent memory that didn't install to the hard drive.
I had to buy my game off the PSN as it had sold out in every single game shop in my area. Was loads more expensive online, but well worth it. It's my 1st Persona game and I'm loving it!
Mighty PS3 still getting AAA releases after 11 years, man. What an amazing piece of gear, not even some cars last that long sometimes!
Japan is slower to migrate to new hardware than other parts of the world so you will see many PS3 developed games ported to the PS4 a few years in to launch such as tales, atelier series, etc while in the USA for example we are at the point where we expect PS4 made games and are disappointed by a PS3 port. I remember how the PSP lived on in Japan what seems like forever after it was over with and replaced by the Vita.
@CheekyMonkey Persona 5 runs on a custom engine developed by Atlus themselves so it wouldn't be as simple as toggling a switch to change resolution they'd have to code a 4k mode themselves also the game's in-game logic is tied to the fps being 30 any higher and the games animations speed up and all sort of stuff will break
