Sony’s treated the PlayStation 4 Pro a little like it’s a guilty secret sometimes, shunning the device from many of its marketing materials despite it actually being a pretty bloody cool piece of kit. It’s uploaded a new commercial today, though, showcasing titles like Gran Turismo Sport, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and God of War.
The slogan’s genius by the way: it touts “dynamic” 4K gaming, which is such clever wording. Obviously your mileage will vary depending on the game, so it can’t really call it “true” 4K gaming (even though the results are still very good). But this slogan avoids any legal issues while using a word that sounds very exciting. Smart.

How about them bundles, Sony?
@ShogunRok Yup, honestly if they do a God of War bundle I'm jumping in.
will God of War release this year ?
I dunno what you guys are talking about. Every Playstation EU YouTube video I've seen recently ends with the Pro, and a logo touting it as "The World's Most Powerful Console". Though I suppose you're right in saying this is one of the only specific ads for it.
Is that Imagine Dragons? I swear I feel like every song I hear these days is Imagine Dragons, even though most of them aren't, but they all sound like they are.
meh ad. GoW isn't even dated yet and how can anyone even tell the difference anyway watching it like that? And that "4k entertaintment" is so weak when X1 has a 4k blu-ray player and Pro doesn't. Not that Pro needs a 4k disc player, but 4k entertainment" sounds lame knowing it doesn't have it.
If the Pro can make Sony some money and make some games look better, great, but I'm not sure how an ad for the Pro works. Just put both consoles in the ad, then next to each console say "For 1080p TV's" and "For 4k TVs". Something like that. And yes, I know Pro has a lot to offer for non 4k TV owners, but it's really the 4k owners who I think would be most likely to buy.
Guess we'll see what happens w/ Scorpio and how Sony responds.
I know that this is the sort of stuff that apparently appeals to the average Western gamer, but I swear to god, if that commercial was all I knew about the PS4, I'd write it off forever.
@Ralizah What about 4k Dangonronpa?
@rjejr "Guess we'll see what happens w/ Scorpio and how Sony responds"
Obviously, we're going to see the quad decker PS4 Pro+
I was hoping more developer see crystal dynamics rise of the tomb raider as an example of ps4 pro game done right, give us the option to play in 4k with stable 30 fps, or 1080p resolution and 60 fps.
@wiiware Agreed,this needs to happen.60fps is what many (including me) want.
SONY just need to make more PS4 Pro's really because most of the time it seems to be sold out(like PS VR to) :-/
I was watching an IGN videocast just t'other day and they were talking about this very thing, one of the panel put across a pretty decent point, being "that its a little bit afraid of showing it off because it shows up the original PS4 as being not as good when you look at screenshots/video comparisons"
They've been using "Dynamic 4K gaming" in their Champions League stadium adverts most of the season and elsewhere.
Nothing new really.
'Dynamic' 4k is not clever wording at all. There is nothing Dynamic about it. Its a UHD gaming console designed to offer 'better than 1080p' resolution in a handful of games whilst using HD quality assets. In most games, excluding the 'few' that do hit native 4k, the best the renders is 2x1080p - a little better than 1440p in terms of actual pixel counts.
If the PS4 was delivering 2x540p and 720p visuals in all but a few indies, remastered games, would they call that 'dynamic' 1080p?
I guess that by the Oxford Dictionaries definition, characterized by constant change or Progress, its true that some games are more 'dynamic' than others as they are changing resolution depending on workload but many games - like Horizon shown off here, is quite static at 1920x2160p and I guess its 'progress' from the base PS4.
However a lot of the new games are still being upscaled to 4k as they are rendered at 2x900p checkerboard to give an 1800p image and then upscaled to 4k. So the XB1 has 'Dynamic 1080p' which sounds better than the PS4's 'plain' 1080p...
@BAMozzy Mate Horizon looks fantastic who cares what Oxford says. On the Pro or on the basic PS4.
If you want "4k entertainment", the Scorpio (or whatever it ends up being called) is out in a few months, avoid the Home Bargains version. But really and truly, the base model PS4 is all a gamer needs in today's climate; it's the ultimate all rounder.
@Flaming_Kaiser I know it looks great. All these games look great and look great on PS4 too. You can't deny that games like Star Wrs Battlefront looks 'great' on PS4 and that's 900p.
If you are used to 1080p, these games look fantastic on a 4k screen. Its a bit like seeing HDR on a 'cheap' HDR TV - compared to years of watching SDR it looks better but then when you see it on a UHD Premium TV, its a big difference. I played a few games on XB1 - like Batman: Arkham Knight at 900p but at 1080p on PS4, its much sharper. I played the Witcher 3 recently on PS4 too which at 1080p looks a lot better than 900p on XB1 too.
These games do look fantastic but they could look so much better at full 4k with 4k assets. Its still going to deliver the 'best' visuals in a Playstation game - at least until the PS5 arrives.
@wackojacko The base PS4 is a great all rounder for those with HD TV's. Its not quite the media machine the XB1 is but certainly stronger in the gaming side. In today's climate, its debatable if its 'all' a gamer needs. Arguably the Pro is better for today's climate as it improves gaming regardless of whether you have a 1080p or 4k TV, more future proof too. The boost mode makes some games more playable and offers more games at (up to) 60fps too. Therefore for 'gamers' its a 'better' console. For more 'casual' gamers (I hate that term), the base PS4 is adequate but gamers want the best frame rates and in that case, the best console is currently the Pro.
@RedMageLanakyn The PS4 Proper.
@BAMozzy SW Battlefront is arguably the best looking game this generation (and best sounding, for that matter). Not sure if the boost mode can offer it anything, though.
@wackojacko it's not worth getting the Pro without a 4k tv. It was designed with these in mind, and you'll get a small increase in the quality but not enough to warrant the price. I'd say holding off until the Scorpio is out and then wait for Digital Foundry to do the comparisons. But for now you're right to stick with the PS4, it's definitely the best gaming console for now.
@BowTiesAreCool Boost mode may help with the frame rates. Its not locked to 60fps particularly in split screen modes. Boost mode isn't suddenly going to make it play at 1080p though as its capped to 900p. It will help in those few situations where frame rates can drop.
I was thinking more about games like Just Cause 3 though which really struggles to maintain a consistent frame-rate. Boost mode certainly helps here. Games like Project Cars also benefit from Boost mode. Depending on where the bottlenecks occur that cause a loss of performance, the boost mode can deliver 30% boost to performance. Its not just in delivering a higher average frame rate or less dynamic scaling in resolutions, but it can also help with loading times, reducing screen tear and texture pop-in too. Overall its still offers an improvement in a lot of games - albeit slight in some cases. The biggest difference can come in patched games. Often the games are better looking and/or offer a better frame rate. Some games offer a 60fps mode - games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Infamous etc so if you want the higher frame rate, then the only option is a Pro. Rise also offers a high visual 1080p version too. Games like BF1 also looks and plays better on a Pro - regardless of whether or not you have a 1080p TV. The Base PS4 version runs mostly at 900p. Yes it can go up to 1080p in less demanding scenes but also drop below 900p too. it also averages a lower frame rate as well. As time goes on, chances are we will see more and more 900p games but at least 1080p on Pro.
Point I was making though is that in a lot of cases, regardless of what TV you own, the Pro will offer a better looking and/or better performing games than the base PS4 can offer. Maybe not with ALL games ever released but with the majority - either by boost mode or by games that are Pro enabled.
It maybe not worth spending £300+ on a Pro for the boost it can offer if you already own a PS4 and a 1080p TV - especially with the current games available. However if you are considering either the PS4 or Pro, even if you just have a 1080p TV at the moment, the Pro is worth the extra over a Slim. Therefore its definitely the best gaming console right now.
@RedMageLanakyn I think they'll call it the PS4 Grand.
I love my PS4 pro and I play on a 1080p gaming moniter, it look's awsome and I have NO plan's to upgrade my TV anytime soon. I wouldn't ever consider going back to a regular or a slim, people that say you don't need a Pro if you don't have 4k don't know what they're on about, 3 of my friend's have Pro's (online friends) and none of them use the 4k even though one of them has a top of the range 4k TV. I very rarely watch advert's as I never really watch TV and when I do it's more likely be on documentary's and I fast forward the advert's because everything I watch is recorded on sky+!
@Sanquine Nah, something tells me that stationary character portraits of anime people and low-detail environments that bleed neon aren't really meant for super high definition displays.
I'm intrigued. About how long does a PS4 last/ typical shelf life as I use almost daily ? I think I've had since launch so I'm praying it doesn't die but if it does should I replace with a Pro? Do I have to mess with settings to get the better frame rates graphics with Samsung 4K tv?
In work we have the new Sony a1 oled with a PS4 pro advert built in it looks too good
@PS4fan no
@BowTiesAreCool you should try comparing games side by side PS4 vanilla/slim v PS4 PRO on hdtvs. Basically battlefront 1, the witcher or final fantasy 15 etc simply look stunning and smoother. Its like getting a new pc 4 years later running on the same full hd but for a trade upgrade price of like £150 bucks! I'm lucky to buy a LG 4k 49" for £400... can't wait to upgrade to PRO!
@smythelove Anyone buying a PS4 for whatever reason, whether its their first or a replacement for a 'broken' console, really should buy a PS4 Pro - even if they have a 1080p TV. The only reason to buy a 'Slim' in my opinion, is down to a very limited budget or gaming isn't that big a deal.
For the extra cost, which in reality isn't that much - the cost of a couple of games, you get better performance across the majority of games. Of course a few are boosted a lot more with Pro enhancements but those that don't can still be improved by Boost mode. Granted its not always a 'big' boost - depending on the game. A game that runs at a locked frame rate and resolution will maybe not benefit much at all - maybe a few seconds quicker loading, maybe less screen tear or texture streaming issues at most. Depending on where the issues lie that cause frame rate drops or the need to scale resolution will depend on the gains. If its GPU based only, then the gains maybe minor - 11% which for a game that maybe running at 40fps, will only be around an extra 4-5fps. If its GPU, you may see a bigger boost but if its both, the boost can be more significant - point is though, its still offering the possibility of improving the majority of games in some way.
Pro enhanced games though can offer a much more significant improvement. It has more games than the base PS4 that run at (up to) 60fps as games like Infamous, Rise of the Tomb Raider etc offer 60fps modes. Games like Horizon look great at 1080p but simply stunning in 4k. Even a game like Titanfall 2 which runs at 1440p looked better. This was the game I started playing on my PS4 just before my Pro arrived and so was more aware of the change the Pro made. 1440p may not sound like much but its nearly double the pixel count of 1080p.
Its more future proof as well. No doubt in a few years, the only TV's likely to be around will be 4k HDR. The slim also lacks a USB and Optical output. The fact you have already have a 4K TV makes even more sense to buy a Pro. If you own VR as well, then that also increases the reasons to upgrade.
The only reason, in my opinion, not to buy a Pro, could be to wait it out for the PS5 and 'make do' with the standard PS4 if you already own one. Analysts predict the PS5 could arrive in 18months (around Nov 2018). Assuming you are someone who buys Day 1 instead of waiting for a wider range of games to play, then maybe it might be better to look at the 2nd hand market to tide you over if your PS4 does break down. Of course the Analysts could be wrong but I think Q42018 makes a lot of sense for Sony to bring out the PS5 to offer the full 4K experience - inc a 4K HDR Bluray player - as well as Game VRR capability, more RAM to offer 4k assets etc.
@BAMozzy Awesome info thanks! Quick thing no optical output for the Pro does that mean my boss all in 1 surround sound wouldn't work since it has the optical output jack?
@smythelove Actually it will work with the Pro as it has an optical out - Its the PS4 Slim that on the other hand does not and so won't work if you use Optical for sound
@BAMozzy oh ok got it. Bose I meant not boss damn autocorrect lol. Definitely would be pro if not ps5 😀
@smythelove Some headsets also use Optical as well. Some analysts think we could see a PS5 by Q4 2018 and whilst that seems close, its still likely to be 18months away at the earliest.
There is no guarantee of an Optical - it could have HDMI 2.1 and offer Atmos or DTS-X lossless sound quality - Optical is only good enough for lossy and compressed 5.1 sound or 2.1 uncompressed. You could wait and find that Optical isn't offered or maybe the PS5 won't arrive for 2.5yrs or more...
@BAMozzy interesting I use my blu tooth headphones which connects to my Samsung 4ktv. There's audio out which is the bose, tv speakers which are normal, and the middle option is the blu tooth. I'm good with the PS4 and pro if mine breaks. I like the fact I can transfer my games with my 2TB portable drive now recently upgraded w/ the Seagate per this sites recommendation.
