Last week, we wrote about the reappearance of ELEX, an open world role-playing title that's coming to PlayStation 4 in October. Its cinematic trailer made an interesting case, and now, you can get a glimpse of the game in action thanks to its new gameplay video.
We don't like judging titles by their trailers, but the release is looking a bit rough in places isn't it? Sometimes it looks fine, other times it looks especially b-tier. A game doesn't have to be AAA to be good of course, but we're getting a distinct whiff of Bound by Flame and The Technomancer from this - ambitious RPGs that just didn't have the budget or the elegance to stand against the heavy hitters of the genre.
How do you think ELEX looks? Could it be a surprise hit? Get exploring in the comments section below.

Thq Nordic presents: Breathing.
Looks exactly like what I would expect from the developers of Risen.
The whiff you mentioned is strong, I think the overall look though is good, more impressive visuals than Fallout 4 for instance.
Certainly looks 'rough' in the movement and performance area and not as polished as alternative open world games (ME:A the exception). It has more in-coming with the Technomancer - something that looks like it could have potential but something seems quite off at the moment...
This smells like a cult classic.
But developers have to stop putting stupid stuff like pole dancers in their game.
@sketchturner do you mind, it took me several hours of stretching and dozens of takes to get my snake-hips rolling seductively for that clip!!!😉

Game could be good, but that gameplay trailer isn't too inspiring...
It's not the budget it's Piranha Bytes. Every game they make looks like this. I hate to say it but there animators are garbage.
Needs some polishing but looks promising. Definitely looks like a game I could really get into but I would like to see more.
Open world walking simulator? JK, still looks a bit boring TBH, getting Fallout vibes though.
Hard to tell from just the trailer. Hopefully not to sparse.
That trailer felt like it took longer than a minute to watch, but also like there was 10 seconds worth of content in it.
@BAMozzy - Yep. Every time I see anything on Elex I think of The Technomancer.
A 6 out 10 kinda game.
I would loved to be proven wrong tho.
@Splat Me too...
The concept of this certainly ticks a number of boxes and I would love a game in this setting to rival the Witcher 3, Fallout 4 etc. I know ME:A had a lot of criticism - but at least the combat felt good. Regardless of what you thought about the changes, the actual 'combat' that they set out to deliver at least worked as intended.
walking through empty environments for 90% of the trailer was pretty off putting but at the end when there was action it looked pretty cool. I especially liked that bit with the flame thrower at night. I really like that night was very dark. Gave it a horror vibe. Hmm dont know what to think. Just have to wait and see
Someday THQ Nordic will get it right...
Not Today...
@BAMozzy I agree. I really enjoyed the combat ME:A and think it's the best of the series.
I know people love the first game as do I but the combat in that game has not aged well at all.
@Mr_Alejo THQ Nordic is just the publisher, they don't actually develop/make games.
Bound by Flame so disappointing that was thought it was a nice action RPG then played it was horrible! combat terrible! hope this is better
