Those reported Nintendo Switch stock shortages are having an impact in Japan, where the handheld hybrid console has once again been outsold by the combined efforts of the PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro. Sony's systems shifted around 29,000 units despite the ongoing lack of new software.
Speaking of which, the top five did see a new PS4 entry in the form of Portal Knights, which sold 11,498 copies. The Game of the Year Edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops III also put in an appearance at number 12, although at only 3,244 units, it's barely worth mentioning.
The wait for Dragon Quest XI continues...

Looks like PS4 is enjoying an uptick in anticipation for Dragon Quest and probably partially in response to the Monster Hunter World reveal. It's certainly any software releases that's driving it up year-over-year ATM.
I look forward to seeing 20k Switch units sold July 21st. Japan loves that weeb game on that day but theres no stock because articifial demand.
Am i doing it right? This internet thing is hard.
But really, thstll be an interesting day. Shame DQXI isnt coming to Switch
The Switch is a terrible system and hopefully people will wake up to that ASAP.
It can't run Frostbite and Third Party will be very limited. There's no optical drive, so the system is basically just a Tojan Horse for Nintendo to resell every game they've ever made thru Virtual Console.
Nintendo will eventually get it's First Party games out, but when you look at Arms & 1-2-Switch, it looks like the next generation of Nintendo game designers are no Miyamoto. I'm not convinced that Nintendo still 'has it'.
We are playing BotW, but we're doing it on the Wii U. So for me, that's not a Switch game.
Can't be too many Switch Shortages as it still sold more 'units' than any other 'single' console. I know the Combined PS4 and Pro sales beat it overall but when you look at the 'games', the Switch hasn't had many 'new' titles either - Only Arms I believe recently.
I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 library is able to outsell Switch in Japan and judging by the fact the 3DS and Vita games are still selling well, the lack of a library may be affecting Switches sales more than availability.
Interesting to see that the Pro sold around 1/3rd of the sales figures of the base PS4 (a ratio of 3:1) which is better than the 5:1 global sales - Who said the Japanese aren't interested in 4K?? LOL
Its the Japanese Broadcasters NHK, along with the BBC who have developed HLG - a form of HDR suitable for broadcasters to deliver 'live' HDR content rather than have to add 'metadata' in at the post production stage. Not great if you want to bring HDR live sports to your Audience and I bet they will be broadcasting the 2020 Olympics in 4k HLG too...
@BLP_Software I've been wondering for weeks now how many they are stockpiling for the 21st as they made that special bundle box which sold out in 18 seconds. That may be a week where the rest of the world doesn't get any.
@GamerDad66 I am sure the Switch could run 'Frostbite' - just not any of the games that EA are making with that engine. You could say that the Switch can't run the latest iteration of the IW engine in CoD because it won't be getting WW2. Frostbite may well be resource heavy and therefore whoever is developing the Fifa game for it, opted to use a 'lighter' engine to get more of the teams and features into it. It won't of course have the 'Journey' and be more inline with the PS3/XB360 versions. The Wii-U can run Frostbite so there is no reason the Switch can't. I predict it was to use a more 'streamline' engine to be able to expand the game further.
For a 'handheld' its impressive but its not that powerful in this mode. GPU wise, its less powerful than the WiiU but with more RAM and improvements to latency and efficiency, its able to match the WiiU in handheld mode. In handheld mode, its running at 40% GPU to prolong battery life. Docked, its never going to match up to the current consoles - look at the size of it. It's, at best, half the power of an XB1, half the RAM with a much lower bandwidth, Half the CPU Cores with a slower clockspeed, and I've discussed the GPU. However, like I said, its incredible to achieve all that in something so small, something 'portable' and its certainly an upgrade on the WiiU which is what you expect from a 'new' console when its replacing the older model. It may not be the 'big' leap you were hoping for in terms of hardware specs but its still an upgrade over its predecessor and the 'best' handheld gaming device too...
@GamerDad66 The only ps4 title in the top 10 is GTA V and that's not really a ps4 title because it is on the ps3?
Forgot about portal knights. Oops!
@GamerDad66 So much fail, very sad to read. Wow...
I love my PS4 but when Sony copies ideas from Switch in the future, PS fanboys will change their attitudes.
@GamerDad66 personally love my switch and think its an awesome system. I dont think its the greatest system ever but its a nice compliment to the ps4 imo. While it does have limitations when compared the other systems its also unique in ways the others cant match. Since you have dad in your username i assume you have kids so from that standpoint my kids love it and im sure yours would too.
@GamerDad66 Assuming Mario odyssey isn't going to WiiU I dunno why anyone would bother right now unless they're dying for certain games to play mobile, may as well just stayed with a WiiU and some DS thing for mobile.
@EVIL-C And when Sony does not, will you change yours
lol, combining SKUs isn't really painting a clear picture.
Overall sales look nice for a period where there isnt much in the way of big new releases though.
When it leaked out the Wii U couldn't do Frostbite, I was a bit bummed as a Wii U owner.
When it leaked out that The Switch can't do Frostbite, I laughed out loud.
My most sincere wish is that Nintendo admit The Switch is a portable system & designed for VC on the go.
Then they could develop a 'Wii U Pro' with actual console specs, optical drive, HDD, and BC with all Wii U accessories and games.
I want Mario Galaxy 3 running at full 1080p/60 and true followups all the great Nintendo Wii U games on a real console.
The Switch is not a home console and is not a worthy successor to Nintendo's previous systems (as it is being currently marketed).
If Nintendo can't make good hardware then maybe they should just go Third Party and make games for other systems.
@GamerDad66 I don't see how you're surprised by any of this. Nintendo's third party support hasn't been super hot since the SNES, and they stopped caring about power after the Gamecube. People have only really been buying Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games for decades, and that hasn't changed very much with the Switch, at least not yet. We won't really be able to see how the third party support will ultimately turn out to be until next year.
Either way, I love my Switch. It's the best Nintendo console ever in terms of its functionality IMO, and it's getting some really great games. Certainly a much better first year lineup than the Wii U, not to mention games we're getting in the future like Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4. If you don't like Nintendo games I can understand why you don't like it, but if you do, I don't see how you could be disappointed. Were you really expecting a super powerful system or PS4 levels of third party support, especially after what happened with the Wii U?
@GamerDad66
It baffles me people are so stuck in their classifications that a hybrid has to be one or the other?
Further to this: Let me quote a Need For Speed dev (That uses Frostbite):
"Would that be a platform that Need for Speed: Payback could run on? I don't see why [not], but it's not something we're looking to at this very moment," he explained.
Source: http://www.gamezone.com/news/e3-2017-need-for-speed-payback-is-possible-on-nintendo-switch-but-there-are-no-plans-3454632
Further more, no optical drive because its faster and cheaper than mechanical parts. Its why SSDs are faster than HDDs. And its known flash media loads faster than a laser on a disc.
Further to that. Mario Galaxy 3 running at 1080/60? Dunno bout you, but I look at Mario Kart, ARMS, Splatoon 2 and I have no doubt most if not all future first party titles to hit that standpoint.
Look sunshine, I hate the Switch too. But I dont lie to myself about its factual capabilities.
And before you say "They didnt say it could run Frostbite they just said they dont see why not therefore it cant" well they havent exactly tried have they?
I'm not lying to myself about The Switch's 'capabilities', but you might be...
Why does BotW only hit 900p in dock and suffer frame rate losses compared to un-docked 720p play?
BotW is a Wii U game that was put into development almost 5 years ago, the fact that the The Switch strugges in anyway with a Last Gen Port should alarm any objective person.
The Switch games I've seem so far look (like Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart) look identical to the Wii U versions.
Shouldn't Splatoon 2 look dramatically better than the Wii U game?
It's not enough to just 'run the Frostbite engine', you have to run an actual game in the engine.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Distinction between a series and a system my boy
@GamerDad66 Because Bresth of the Wild was ported in about 10 months from a Power-PC architecture to an ARM one. Thats a huge factor right there.
And Splatoon 2 does look better. You dont know what identical means. Go look at the trees between the two. Furthermore, it does look better.
By your own admission a game looking better is based purely on specification of its hardware. Splatoon 2 runs at 1080p. Therefore by your criterion it dies in fact look better.
And have the deceny to tag me next time thanks. I did for you.
I don't tag or want to be tagged because all it does is fill-up my email with old responses.
If you say Splatoon 2 looks better, I'll take your word, but this is nothing compared to franchises that moved from PS3 to PS4.
I've always had Nintendo as my 'second system', but this time around I'm not feeling it.
They seem to be taking Apple's approach now, by forcing people to rebuy everything accessory-wise and overcharging for everything (even though it's an incremental upgrade from the Wii U).
I have a nagging suspicion that Nintendo wants to call The Switch a console just so they can charge $60 per game (verses $40 for portable games).
@GamerDad66 Well tough. Thats how this site works. And I dont see how tagging me fills YOUR inbox.
Of course its nothing from PS3 to PS4. Some people would say even thats a stretch given we are fast smacking our heads into the graphical ceiling. PS3 to PS4 is /maybe/ 1080p to slightly higher chance of 1080p. If Nintendo had Uncharted the changes would be visible. Art styles lend themselves to different kinds of detail be it model or texture quality to name a few.
And you must remember. PS2 was incremental to PSone. Heck we will NEVER see another jump like SD to HD again. Its all incremental as we hit that ceiling.
And you had to rebuy everything for PS4. And Xbox One. Or if you replace any hardware you more often than not need new things. Because its different hardware. PS3 controllers wont work on PS4. Wonder why even though with exception to a few buttons its the same design and layout.
And they call it a console because thats what it is. Handheld consoles and home consoles are still consoles. And you really dont grasp that something can be both can you? God forbid if you look at a hybrid car.
Plus, $60 per game. Whoopie. For a game you can play anywhere? Fine by me. If its less even better. But they are a company. Companies make money. If they dont they stop existing. YOU have a job. Would you be happy making a third less of your wages even though you can and should because everyone else does and you want to make money to live? Its the same for any company be them individuals or a business.
Nice to see both the switch and ps4 doing well. Giving a good choice on how i want to play video games in the future. Mk8 on the switch is amazing.
Although at the moment i spend all my video gaming time on the ps vita.
@GamerDad66 If power is all that matters to you in a gaming system, I would suggest building a PC. A mid-range PC can wipe the floor with a PS4, after all.
The fact that the Switch can be used as a portable doesn't make it any less of a console. It's just a console that happens to have a built-in screen.
@stevejcrow Look at the whole top 20. PS4 has the most games after 2DS and 3DS.
PS4 back catalog doing the work, like Ys 8 which was released over a month ago. Ys is considered a niche series, but the continued sales of Ys 8 show there is demand for these types of games on PS4.
@KirbyTheVampire Here's the thing about PS4: it's an excellent console. No corners cut, no dumb design decisions like Switch. Power doesn't have anything to do with it, PS4 is simply the best system currently, with the best game selection and the best features. Switch can't match either.
@GamerDad66 You can disable the email notifications from the settings.
Also, completely agreed. PS4 is a great system and the game selection is incredible. It's great value for money, unlike Switch.
@Mahe How exactly is it better designed? The Switch can be played identically to a PS4, AKA sitting on the couch with a controller, but it can also be taken on the go as a handheld, and it's arguably the best designed handheld ever, not to mention the detachable controllers for multiplayer gameplay and the kickstand and everything. So basically, it's a PS4, except better, at least from a functionality perspective. Don't tell me you wouldn't find the PS4 a way better console if it were a hybrid as well.
"PS4 is simply the best system currently, with the best game selection"
Ya don't say? I would never have guessed that a system that's been out since 2013 would have a more robust library than a system that's been out for like 5 months, lol. Besides, the first year lineup for the Switch blows the PS4's first year lineup completely out of the water.
@KirbyTheVampire "So basically, it's a PS4, except better"
Wow. So except for the games, the features, the controllers, the ease of use, the services like PS Plus... Switch is exactly like PS4! (And the even more ridiculous claim, of being "better".)
These systems are designed differently on a very fundamental level. They operate differently. As you admit, the PS4's game selection vastly outnumbers that of Nintendo's joke system. They can be used to play games, but that's about where the similarities end. PS4 and that garbage tablet are completely different systems, and all to PS4's benefit. No, I certainly wouldn't want for the PS4 to be like Nintendo's sorry excuse for a system.
@GraveLordXD Physical games aren't downloaded, they are installed from the disc. And what do you know, this reduces the wear and breakage of the optical drive. That's both of your complaints addressed by what the PS4 already does!
@Mahe "the games" Whether the games are superior or not is purely subjective. Clearly some people must like the games, considering how the Switch has consistently maintained its sales momentum.
"the features" What features are you speaking of, exactly? The PS4 has a lot of things that can be classified as features.
"the controllers" I much prefer the Pro controller to the Dualshock 4. I do find the DS4 more comfortable than the grip or split JoyCons, but I'll still take them over the DS4 any day, both for the fact that they allow you to play it on the TV and on the go, as well as the fact that you essentially have two controllers right out of the box for local multiplayer. They're definitely useable anyway, though. Besides, the Pro controller solves any issue I have with the JoyCons or the grip. In the end, whether the controllers are better or not is subjective.
"ease of use" Okay, this absolutely isn't subjective like most of the other things you listed. The Switch is infinitely easier to use than the PS4. Not only is it a hybrid, so you can play the games anywhere, but you can leave the games suspended in sleep mode so that you're right back in the game almost instantly. No need to navigate the start menu in games or anything. You just pause the game, turn the system off (sleep mode is what it goes into by default when you press the Power button), and then when you're ready to play again, you turn it on, click on the game in the UI, and boom. You're back in the game in a span of like 5 seconds. Not to mention how fast the UI is, and that there's not constant updates like there is on the PS4. Even when the system does occasionally update, it takes like 30 seconds.
"PS Plus" I'm not denying that PS Plus is a good service, but let's wait until the Switch's subscription service comes out before we compare them.
"As you admit, the PS4's game selection vastly outnumbers that of Nintendo's joke system" Why do you say that as if it means anything? Any system that has been out since 2013 will have a bigger library than a system that has been out for 5 months. It would be completely ludicrous if it didn't.
"PS4 and that garbage tablet are completely different systems, and all to PS4's benefit" They're absolutely different. Which system is better comes down to the individual, though. I don't really feel like someone who presumably doesn't own both a Switch and a PS4 like you should be comparing them. I would never judge a system's controllers, games, or ease of use when I've had zero experience with that system.
"No, I certainly wouldn't want for the PS4 to be like Nintendo's sorry excuse for a system" So if you could press a button and have the PS4 be playable on your TV and on the go, you wouldn't do it? Really? I have a feeling you're not being entirely honest.
@GraveLordXD there is one advantage of a physical copy - not having to wait for the game to download on servers that aren't exactly reliable.
@KirbyTheVampire "So if you could press a button and have the PS4 be playable on your TV and on the go, you wouldn't do it?"
It doesn't work like that. Nintendo made Switch a hybrid for that purpose and it's a garbage system because of it. So no, anything that turns PS4 into garbage like Switch, no, I wouldn't want it.
Having PS4 and 2DS is infinitely better than a compromised hybrid like Switch. With PS4 and 2DS, you get the best of both worlds, a great home console and a great handheld, without compromises, and the massive game catalogs of both of those devices.
PS3 still in the charts!❤️
@Mahe I can see why the lack of power would cause issues for PlayStation, considering a lot of games that come out for the system rely quite a bit on visuals and whatnot for them to sell. That was probably half the reason a lot of people bought Horizon.
I think the hybrid nature works great for Nintendo because gameplay takes precedence above everything else, and you don't need huge amounts of power for that. The games they have been producing look great anyway, like Splatoon 2, ARMS, and Zelda.
@KirbyTheVampire It's still not about the power. It's about the games, the features and the user experience. Having a standalone console with great games and interface is always better than having a jack of all trades hybrid that does none of it well.
@Mahe Whether the games or the user experience are good or not comes down to your opinion. I have thoroughly enjoyed my PS4, but if I had to choose between the two, I would choose the Switch, and so would many others. Many others would choose the PS4, though. It all comes down to opinion. Saying that a certain system has better games is completely wrong.
Granted, the Switch doesn't have things like Netflix, but who doesn't have at least one device to watch Netflix on nowadays? Reggie hinted that apps like Netflix and YouTube are coming eventually, anyway.
@KirbyTheVampire Switch is lacking so many things that PS4 and even 2DS have. Games first and foremost. Sure, maybe you really like playing ARMS or something, but the fact is, Switch has very few games now, and barely any exclusives. In that situation it's obvious that PS4 and 2DS will have so many more games that appeal to different people.
And guess what? Opinion thrives on quantity. So when you say that better games are a matter of opinion, the quantity of games means that there will be a vast majority of gamers for who PS4 and 2DS have better games. And the opposite, it's easy to say that Switch has poor games, because the quantity just isn't there. That's the comparison you invite.
You know what else? 60 million gamers have chosen a PS4 already, 66 million have chosen 2DS or 3DS. At current estimates, Switch will never reach those numbers. Your definition of "many" is faulty, because it's highly unlikely that many people will choose a Switch over PS4 or 2DS.
@Mahe It has few games now, but once it's been out for around 4 years like the PS4, it'll be a different story. I don't think the Switch has as much value as the PS4 does at the moment, but as time goes on they'll become much more comparable, especially since first years are always a bit slow for consoles.
And it might not reach those numbers, but that doesn't means the system and the games are automatically worse. A lot of games that come out for the PS4 undoubtedly have more widespread appeal than most of Nintendo's IPs with the exception of things like Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, and Mario Kart, (and maybe Splatoon, depending on how well Splatoon 2 does) but that doesn't make them inherently worse. Nintendo is actually one of the best companies out there when it comes down to consistently making high quality games.
Again, you keep making blanket statements like "PS4 is better value". It does have a wider variety of games, and PlayStation does generally sell better than Nintendo consoles, but only individuals can determine for themselves which is the better bang for their buck.
@KirbyTheVampire Wii U has been out for over 4 years, and it never really picked up. The game catalog is really poor compared to PS4 and 2DS. Why would Switch do any better?
So, PS4 has better games, better features, better hardware, better controllers, better user interface and experience... even a better price! Why mince words with this when PS4 is so far better than the troubled Switch?
The PS4 and 2DS are great now. They don't need promises of "in 4 years it will have games!" Great hardware, great games, right here, right now. That's the game, Switch loses.
@Mahe I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on a lot of those points, lol. Good debating with you, though.
@GamerDad66
The PS4 has easily been my favorite console this gen but the jump from PS3 to PS4 was hardly anything major. Hell some remasters struggle to run 1080p 60 fps consistently and most of the newer games can't do that at all. The Switch may not be a powerhouse but the PS4 is embarrassingly underpowered as well. At least with Nintendo's system there's an excuse for it given the handheld nature. Sony and MS basically admitted they screwed up by releasing these useless mid-gen 'upgrades' that aren't even worth their prices.
@Gamer83 The difference in graphical processing power might not be huge, but it's the differences in everything else that count. Most importantly, the PS4 game selection is very different to the early years of the PS3. Everything about the PS4 is just much better designed than it was with PS3, and it's still the most powerful console of the generation, so you can't really fault it with that either.
@Mahe
It's a better designed machine than PS3, no arguing that, still underpowered.
@Mahe Do you remember how many games were available for the PS4 and 3/2DS when they came out? The 3DS was heavily criticized for lack of games. The PS4 (and Xbox One) had so many last gen ports in it's first year as well. That is not true any more. And why? The systems have been out for years (PS4 2013, 3DS 2011). The Switch has been out less than half a year. If Sony released the PS5, without backward compatibility, in March, do you think the system would have the same volume of titles as the PS4 has today?
@Trikeboy Yeah 3DS had a bad start, but they really turned it around with 2DS. Plus it had BC with the awesome DS library.
PS4 started getting some worthwhile titles right from the start and it built up its catalog fast.
But we're not living in the past, we are right here. And right now, PS4 and 2DS have stellar game selections and the upcoming game lists are fantastic too (unlike Switch), so with PS4 and 2DS you get a great back catalog and all the upcoming games. It's a great time for games if you have either or both of those systems.
@Mahe PS4 launched with 24 games, of which only 4 were new titles. The rest were PS3 ports and dual releases. You cannot compare a console under 6 months old with a console that is 4 YEARS old.
@Trikeboy Sure I can, because that's what people do. That's the situation that Nintendo put themselves in. They launched Switch mid-gen because they mishandled Wii U so badly, and that's going to reflect poorly on Switch too.
When PS4 launched, it was the start of a new generation. The other options were Wii U (dud), Xbone (haha no), and the previous generation (getting pretty old at 7 - 8 years).
Now the situation is completely different. PS4 has been out only 3 years and a half, and it's in its absolute prime right now, doing superb. It's going to get a load of games for the upcoming years, and it's a console design masterpiece. It's Nintendo's own fault for putting Switch in this situation.
Mid what gen? Playstation's gen? Why should any company decide to base their hardware release date on the competitors release date? That is moronic. If the PS5 releases in 2019, that will be two years into the Switch lifecycle and the Switch will have more games available than the PS5.
Also, a design masterpiece? What are you smoking? There were numerous issues with the console at launch. Perhaps you have forgotten them. Screen flickering, disk eject issues, audio and video problems etc. What about using HDR and VR on the Pro? Did you enjoy the 4.50 update? The Xbox One is just as well designed as the PS4, if Microsoft didn't cripple it at the E3 reveal it would be doing better. But since you are fanboying, I can see why you think so.
@Trikeboy Ok that's enough if you can't resort to having a debate without insulting other users you are going to have to go somewhere else, I am afraid.
