Here’s a bit of a twist: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy actually outsold new release Splatoon 2 in the UK sales charts this week – despite the former being almost a month old. Now the comparison’s not entirely fair because Activision’s remaster is cheaper and on a console with a bigger install base, but it had looked like the ‘Coot was starting his slow descent out of the best sellers list following Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age’s success last time around.
Unsurprisingly, the latter dropped all the way down into seventh position, as Fallout 4 re-entered in ninth place. There’s not a massive amount to say about the chart otherwise: Cars 3: Driven to Win debuted in a very disappointing 34th place, suggesting that movie tie-ins are bad business these days. Otherwise, you’ll find the full top ten embedded below.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 22nd July, 2017
- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
- Splatoon 2
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Overwatch
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
- FIFA 17
- Fallout 4
- LEGO Worlds

coughs So...
Who got that right huh?
@get2sammyb @kyleforrester87 your choice of hats to eat boys. I did say, its full price in their weakest market on a system very few bought.
@BLP_Software Aw you little tart, i'll let you have that one. I'll eat a Lego hat since you gave me the choice :')
@kyleforrester87 sounds yummy.
But yeah. Dunno what the Sony fans were doing bigging up Splatoon. Everyone else saw it coming. If Splatoon 1 coulsnt hit number 1 at £35 with more potential sales, how do you think Splatoon 2 would do with less potential sales at £50?
It outdid the original at least. Basically accounts for the deluge of TV ads Ive seen.
But yeah. Cmon guys. It doesnt suit ya being nice about Nintendo. Writing was on the wall and you all called me pessimistic XD
Nintendo gets a 1st place once every other generation basically. Be interesting to see the margins on this but given it goes by value and Crash is cheaper its probably a lot more sales.
Remember guys, its their weakest market. This is a foregone conclusion. The company is on life support here
Isn't that like 1 day of sales though?
My stomach is full of hat.
@BLP_Software It was practically neck and neck looking at the leaked numbers, and the game's clearly going to be a monster in regions like Japan and (maybe even) North America.
Plus it outsold the Wii U version by a significant margin.
I'm not sure what point you're trying to prove?
@neuroticbiotic Also remember these sales charts are value based.
Crash was cheaper than Splatoon 2. But it still topped the chart for most value.
Which means to do that it had to basically double the sales of Splatoon.
Thats how bad Splatoon 2 did.
Glad crash is still selling well! love it!
Very decent results for Nintendo camp though.. Splatoon 2 is doing well which it absolutely deserves
@BLP_Software don't think the UK chart is value based.. it's raw sales number.. the leaked number put them 1k unit apart (29k vs 28k)
@Godsent They are for individual formats. And Splatoon 2 came first with Crash 2nd. But theres the thing. One cost almost double to buy. Which means most likely Crash had a large margin.
@get2sammyb Sales are value based Sammy.
Of course it outsold the Wii U version in value. One was £35! The other is £60! One makes more money by default.
As for Japan, you saw the raffles right? It wont hit its potential.
Plus, Splatoon 2 has regional matchmaking. I spend a very long time waiting for players to show up but in America apparently its instant. Even had many messages for not enough players.
For Switch fans, it was the biggest day of their summer.
For Crash Bandicoot, it was just another Monday.
Not really surprised. Splatoon 2 buyers were probably mostly fans of Splatoon on Wii U, but the game never really made a lasting impression in the UK. Expect Splatoon 2 sales to drop much faster than Crash.
You can kind of see this with Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age: it had a lot of eager fans buying it at launch, but it doesn't have the sustained appeal or large audience that Crash has, so it goes down much faster than Crash does.
Are there still people in the world that don't have gta 5??? It's impossible! There must be a millionaire that's buying copys of it all weeks! Cahse i bet there has been more copys sold than there are people in the world!
@BLP_Software like I said..it's 29k vs 28k.. yes there's a margin but not that big
@Xaritah On PS4, X1, PC, PS3 and X360 combined, GTA5 has sold around the same number as there are just PS4 systems sold in the world.
So yes, there are still people in the world that don't have GTA5.
@BLP_Software and not sure why you had long time for match making... I briefly played it at a friend's place on Sunday (personally haven't decided to buy it or not yet) and matchmaking are as instant as it gets.. like <10 seconds.
@Godsent 28000? No wonder I can never get matches. Thats actually kind of pathetic.
Japan worries me the most though.
Probably didnt help Splatoon launched on the end of the school year to the day. Most families will be off and away for 6 weeks.
@Godsent You havent had the not enough players messages? In matches my connection is perfect but actual finding players is slow and it often drops saying there isnt enough users.
@BLP_Software aye..tried around 2pm on Sunday it was fine.. maybe that's peak time and I was just lucky I think I'm going to wait for a month or two if I pick the game eventually. it does look appealing but I've got a few titles on ps4 to finish first
@Godsent Wow. I was playing all over the weekend. Gotta say I dint like being in their weakest market with regional matchmaking XD
Even Nintendo kids don't care about Splatoon all that much. Not being about to buy a Switch of course doesn't help at all.
Splatnoon 2 at 2, mk8 at 4 and zelda at 6. Switch is doing pretty good. Guessing some people been waiting for the big 3 to come out before buy the switch.
Great to see crash doing so well. Might mean a few more ps1 remasters on the cards.
Crash is good fun. Although I haven't played it for long. Too busy on Elite Dangerous at the moment.
Good to see Crash on top. I'm sure Splatoon 2 will do great whether it deserves so or not.
If splatoon was on PS4 I'd buy it
I'll get a Switch eventually, and when I do, Splatoon 2 is high on the priority list. Absolutely loved Splatoon on Wii U.
Splatoon looks like crap to me, not saying it's bad at all but not my cup of tea, I reckon if it had been launched on PS plus rather than the WiiU then it would have been long forgotten.
@BLP_Software It's not value based, though.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Thats the general consensus actually. You would be surprised how many people simply dont care about the series.
@get2sammyb Individual formats is. While splatoon 2 came first it was also double the price. But Crash 1 still sold more units. Which means Crash would have had to sell double what Splatoon sold to top that chart.
In raw numbers sure it may be different but I expect its closer to double Splatoon 2 than people think accounting for digital sales.
Remember, one is cheaper on a huge system and driven by nostalgia. The other started on a failure, has moved over the a moderate success at the moment, but has an issue of lacking identity and being part of a series many people just dont care about.
And to top it off, this is the UK. Nintendo is so damned in this market that its sometimes weird they try so hard.
And I dont get why youre trying to big Splatoon 2 up like you did last week. The game has a myriad of problems from time restrictions to matchmaking to online chat to honestly even in my opinion being quite meh.
You know at least Call of Duty gives a new storyline each year. This was a slight tweak of the original. Even one of the bosses is the same, maybe two if you count the final boss.
Given the stock issues in Japan and how this game is rightfully perceived not only by fans of the original but the wider gaming public who never gave a damn anyway, dont be shocked if a third entry doesnt show up for a long time. Splatoon is evidently a one and done franchise.
I dont see what you see in it to keep wanting to big it up man but more power to you. Its just not a very good game and isnt meant to be a series.
@Mahe I believe GTAV reached 80 million a while ago. So yes, it has already ''outsold'' the PS4. Wouldn't be surprised if it ended up becoming the best selling game of all time.
Do not underestimate the power of playstation.
Also crash bandicoot
Just got splatoon 2, I'll wait until my splatoon 2 edition pro controller arrive before playing it
Great to see Crash still doing well!despite the difficulty and the fact I'm c*ap at it now I am still loving it and would pick the new one up day one if they were to make one.
I thought Splatoon looked a bit pants when I first saw it too but now the more I've seen of it the more interested I am and I have a feeling as soon as my pre ordered Switch arrives with Mario Kart 8 deluxe it may very well be the next game I pick up
Kinda surprised but not massively. Nostaliga sells and Crash is at a nice price point.
I bought Crash Triolgy over the weekend. I have no interest in Splatoon, but I did buy Arms along with Crash. And of course, GTA V will never leave that list.
No surprise the game was far too expensive at £50.
@Octane Oh cool. A lot of those are probably the PC version, but as we can see from the chart here, the PS4 version is also still selling strong.
Currently watching my nephew play Crash on my PS4 after he couldn't get it on launch day as it was sold out. I'm reminded how much of a headache it gave me with the original on the ps1- something to do with the camera? Plus some of the jumps and villains are excessively unfair.
As for Splatoon 2, it's been a real joy to play it over the weekend.- a really special game.
Still glad to see Crash is doing well. I did buy Splatoon 2, mainly because I missed out on the first game. Really fun.
It's quite impressive that Splatoon 2 had higher launch sales than the original considering the difference in install base, Nintendo games tend to have long legs so it will sell well throughout the console's lifetime.
I don't know why some people are saying the opinion is that Nintendo fans aren't too fussed about Splatoon, the original sold over five million copies and is widely considered as one of highlights of the last few years of Nintendo games, also proving to Nintendo that they need to create new IP and not just rest on their big hitters (something they seem to have taken on board if ARMS is anything to go by).
It's great to see Crash doing so amazingly well, i thought it would do ok but not be as big a success as it has been, awesome to see
Been playing both over the weekend, great games! I don't really understand the Splatoon hate on here, to be honest. My advice: just get what games you want, play them, and enjoy your life
How in the world has GTA been in the top10 for the past 2 years like this. This is getting ridiculous.
Seeing how bad Wii U sold particularly in the UK, Splatoon is like a new IP for a lot of people there.
I am having a lot of fun with it.
@Toadie Splatoon had a really slow start back then, so selling more than it did on launch week isn't exactly impressive.
@Mahe I think it is considering the small install base of the Switch in the UK so far.
I'd say early signs point to the Switch having a good attach rate but first party games selling well is a given, i'm more interested to see how the bigger third party games do, i'd love to see them do well but it would be going against years of trends to the contrary.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
I'm more of a Gears of War guy when it comes to third person shooters, Splatoon didn't seem like my kind of game at all but I gave 2 a chance and it's actually really damn good. It probably would go more overlooked on PS4 but that's just because the PS4 has an insanely awesome lineup. Even Horizon, for all the attention it's received, hasn't gotten the attention it truly deserves.
It will keep on selling forever though because Nintendo games got legs and there aren't "big" third party games coming out on the Switch so it's not like they will be sharing the user base's attention with stuff like Destiny, Assassin's Creed and Battlefront in the coming months.
@BLP_Software I hear what you're saying about this being their weakest market but the reality is that the Switch has been sold out for quite some time. Even the recent extra stock went immediately so Splatoon may have had a shot if they could have simply had some consoles available for people to buy.
As for the game itself I'm not the biggest fan of online shooters (Destiny aside) but this is great fun, the only thing its missing is local multiplayer which is odd considering the platform its on.
@Toadie Switch is also starved for games. Splatoon 2 is the first "big" exclusive for the system (MK8 and Zelda aren't exclusive), after a long drought in game releases. Switch early adopters simply don't have anything else to buy.
Week ending July 22nd, so it's accounting for 1 to (maybe) 2 days of physical Splatoon2 sales. 3 NS games in top 10 is what actually surprises me.
So we're getting Crash Team Racing right? Because n. sane trilogy is tracking really well there. I still wish the hit boxes were better, but can't deny this is still a great release.
@BraveFencerZan CTR remaster/sequel should be a no-brainer after this.
Been playing Splatoon 2 all morning and I'm pretty rusty or maybe I just need to wait till all the good players move past me. 😁
I'll pick up Crash in a sale at some point.
@Mahe Yeah i agree that a lack of other titles to choose from would definitely have helped it, i wouldn't say its starved of games though, i bought mine on launch day and haven't run out of games to play on it, i've got ten retail titles and countless more download games, the e-shop has been surprisingly strong with some cracking games released so far.
With at least one big game released every month now until xmas at least the Switch could well end up having one of the strongest first year line-ups we've seen in a long, long time.
@Toadie Do you own a PS4? A 2DS? A Wii U? If you have had any other systems, and are looking for new games, then there's literally almost nothing on Switch. Splatoon 2 is one of the few Switch exclusives in existence.
@Mahe I buy every console so yes, i own all of these, but why are you only focusing on exclusives ? Just because a game isn't exclusive doesn't mean it's not worth getting, ignoring the fact that Zelda and Mario Kart are better on Switch there's still plenty of games to get for it.
Just looking through your comments on here and Nintendo Life i can see just how much you dislike the Switch but your bias is strange seeing as the PS4 had next to no worthwhile exclusives for well over its first year, the complete opposite of the Switch's first year line-up so i don't really know why you hate it so much but praise the PS4.
@Toadie But here's the thing: PS4 had and has better versions of the games. Because of the hardware design, Switch doesn't.
For example, MK8 is better on Wii U for me. Shantae HGH is best on PS4. Rayman Legends is best on PS4 (and long since played). And so on. There is no game where the Switch version is the best, optimal way of playing any game for me. I like having the "best" versions of games, and Switch doesn't have those.
Also, when it comes to exclusives, PS4 and 2DS have so many games that are either "console exclusive" (PS4) or "handheld exclusive" (2DS). That is a great thing. All that variety is great. And that's yet another thing Switch doesn't have.
