Now that Persona 5 has been out for a good few months, we thought it was about time to ask the ultimate question: is it the best Persona game? Atlus' latest entry in the role-playing series was met with universal critical acclaim and it's safe to say that gamers went absolutely nuts for it. It quickly became the best selling title in the franchise's history.
Persona 5 has been an undeniable success story, then, but again, now that many of you have had the time to think about it, is it really the 10/10 Game of All Time that many have described it as? Does it better the likes of Persona 3, or Persona 4? What about the first two Persona games, which originally launched all the way back on the PSone?
For the sake of keeping things simple, we'll be lumping each game's enhanced editions in with their parent titles in our poll, and we won't be including spin-offs. Vote for which Persona game you think is best, and then share your reasoning in the comments section below.
What is the best Persona game? (84 votes)
- Revelations: Persona
- Persona 2: Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment
- Persona 3/FES/Portable

Persona 5 is the best visually and mechanically but I felt it dragged on a little too long with the story
In the graphics/gameplay department? Yep. The UI is the best in the entire MegaTen franchise, with all the style that they have going on. Really glad they put some classic MegaTen elements in the game too. I didn't like the generic shadows and the card shuffle hing in the last 2.
In the story department? P2 takes the cake for that. And P3 after. The story was overall pretty nice as I played it, but there aren't as many memorable parts as 2 and 3. One thing I also don't like about 4 and 5 is they put character development for the main cast behind social links/confidants. 2 and 3 did it well by having the playable cast always dealing with their personal issues as part of the main story, and have even more stuff for social links in 3. For 4 and 5 they kind of just have their badass moment in their respective dungeons, and just kind of there afterwards, so if you didn't have the required stats to continue their social link/confidant then uhh sorry, gonna have to drop another 100 hours for a second playthrough.
Overall it's a solid Persona game, just not the best imo. P2 takes that title for me.
I love Persona 5. It's my most played Persona title with over 200 hours, but it's not...
Persona 3.
I'll never forget that cast. Yukari, Mitsuro, Junpei, Akihiko, Aigis...
It was the darkest JRPG I've ever played. I don't think there ever will be anything like that again.
On a gameplay and design level, it's unquestionably the best game in the series. Almost every weird flaw in previous games is gone here (Persona 1/2 with their horrible, dated U.I. and, in the case of 2, an intolerable demon negotiation system; Persona 3/FES with its inability to directly control your characters; P3P with its visual novel-esque set-up that mars the set-up; Persona 4 and Golden with their lousy Persona acquisition mini-games), and it incorporates some great elements from mainline SMT that were missing in recent installments (guns and demon negotiation, in particular). The social link system is even more useful now. The dungeons went from being boring, featureless hallways to massive, intricately designed dungeons with well-integrated themes (Persona 4 made a half-step in this direction with themed hallways).
Story and character-wise? It's probably my favorite. The potent combination of themes relating to social oppression, vigilantism, cyber-terrorism, and the ways in which the media can be used as a tool to further the designs of the powerful and influential really do a good job of tapping into the chaotic zeitgeist of the modern world. And this all ties into amazing character development for the central cast of characters.
This is iteration done right. Easily one of the best console JRPGs I've ever experienced.
As I said in the P5 thread, I can't really compare P5 to the others, as I haven't played 3 or 4 since I was in high school, and I haven't played 1 or 2 period. On it's own, it's still a very well made RPG. It has it's issues (Lack of subtlety, strict free time), but they didn't ruin my enjoyment of the game much, and I think it's stellar. I'll have to replay 3 and 4 before saying "best game" though.
If I had to guess what everyone thought the best game is, it'd likely be P4. Though older fans would probably give P2 the nod as well. I've especially heard a lot of love for Eternal Punishment.
I think one thing that will hold P5 out of the best in series race is that we still have a "base" version of P5, while the other games have had an enhanced rerelease in some capacity (1 and 2 had PSP remakes, 3 had FES as well as a PSP version, and 4 had Golden). It would probably be safer to wait until 5 gets one. It'll take a while, but I think we all know it will happen.
Game play - Persona 5
Story / plot - Persona 4 Golden
Characters - too close to call
Both great games, hard to choose.
5 has the best gameplay but 4 has a much better story and better music. Both are fantastic games and some of the best rpgs I've played
I've only played P4 and P5 and loved them both. Don't make me choose between them because I...... okay, P4G was a little better.
@Tsurii Nah P3 is amazing, but I'm questioning the sanity of all those voting for P2...
Great story- probably the best in the series, but gameplay wise...
Persona 3 was the best character wise/story. Would love a remake with persons 5 engine . The story in 5 was a bit messy and the way characters introduced wasn't the best. Outing persona 3 /portable ans persona 3 fez in the category is poor
This is tough. I spent so long loving Persona 4 Golden, having already played it on PS2 years previous, and it being the sole reason I bought a Vita, and so it's hard for something else to take its place. But Persona 5 really was a treat. It upped the ante in terms of style and gameplay and that ridiculous disco dungeon tune, and I think I've got to say it's the best Persona yet.
Persona 4 Golden was my first true JRPG experience so it holds a special place in my heart since that's my favorite genre now. I love everything about it, but Persona 5 was just better to me. It took a while for that to sink in because I never thought anything would top P4G but then I realized something finally did. P 3,4, and 5 are all incredibl, but P5 was the best
Easily P5. The others are still great RPGs, but P5 got every single aspect right for me.
Only played Persona 5 but I can't imagine the others topping it! Someone above mentioned something about the cast from P3 but that's exactly how I feel about this one. I mean, I'm interested in a dancing game because I love the cast that much hahaha.
@Comrade44 debt collectors say anything to get in your house.
I would say P4G is better than P5 because Morgana doesnt constantly tell you to go asleep.
Tbf I havent finished 5 yet just passed the beach anime clip, so cant really judge.
Persona 5 was my first and is one of the best games I've played in years, I loved every aspect of it so I don't see the others topping it. Hopefully I'll play them one day and find out.
I haven't managed to get more than 30 hours through 4 and 5 - they are way overrated in my opinion, but that's just me
Probably but I'm still on the first dungeon. I think Yakuza 0 came out around the same time...
I am gonna be that guy: havent played a single Persona game, unless Arena counts.
I still bought the SE of 5 and hope to play it someday. I also bought Q and will get one of the new rhythm ones.
It loads fast, great action, story, easy to understand and fun combat. It has a great art style. There is actual adult like themes and language. One of the best games of this and last gen PS3, 4, 360, XB1, Wii. A pure gem!
What about the Arena games and the Dancing All Night game? They should've been included in the poll.
Persona 4 Golden is my greatest game of all time. Persona 5 is outstanding, in artstyle, gameplay and music. But story was handled better in P4G. Persona 5's story was great too.
It is and it is not. If you compare every single aspect of the game it will undoubtedly be the winner but something like Persona 3 was way more daring and fresh in its time. I found P5 kinda formulaic, tame and brand-aware in comparison.
@Bliquid OMG somebody who gets it. Couldn't agree more.
5 is the best hands down.
3 and 4 are on the same level but with the fourth entry being more polished.
2 is a nice old school weird rpg.
1 isn't good, is dated and was never great since the start.
