Fallout 4 could yet come to PlayStation VR – even if we have our misgivings about whether it would actually run on the PlayStation 4. Earlier this week, HTC described the Vive version of the apocalyptic virtual reality role-playing game as an “exclusive”, but publisher Bethesda was quick to respond, stating that it will simply launch “first” on the headset.
“We still want to support as many platforms as possible,” the firm said, hinting that PlayStation VR isn’t entirely off the cards. To its credit, HTC also clarified, explaining that it used the word “exclusive” errantly, and that it’s up to Bethesda to determine “when and where” the adaptation launches. So, is the dream back on?
We’ll have to wait and see, but in the meantime, both The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and DOOM VFR have been dated for Sony’s headset – the former of which is a timed exclusive on PS4.

Does make me wonder what it'd actually look like on PSVR. Surely it would have to be stripped back to a large degree.
@ShogunRok To be honest, I personally don't believe it's possible. I'm sure they're experimenting, but my bet is Oculus Rift will be the only other platform for it.
I re purchased it this week, loaded it up with a bunch of meaty mods applied and it still ran perfectly on a standard ps4. It may struggle on PSVR but I definitely think it's possible, it's not exactly the greatest looking game.
Having not played FO4 yet - what about the game suggests it would not possible to run on psvr when skyrim can? Not trolling, just genuinely interested. Is it because FO is a ps4 gen title?
I appreciate the skyrim engine will be the ps3 engine rather than skyrim se; but as we all know that game is vast in scope.
Questions of portability aside, I expect sales of Skyrim and doom will affect that decision. Good sales and marketing with Sony might tip it. I sold my copy of Fallout 4 in case a VR version emerged as I never really got into it but VR sounds rad.
@Rudy_Manchego doom vfr though is a brand new game
The only way I could see Fallout 4 VR coming to PlayStation is if they upgraded the controllers first and foremost, and then if they came out with the rumored lighthouse-esque roomscale tech.
Upgraded Moves I could see for this gen, but if they are indeed planning a similar approach to tracking as the Vive, then I wouldn't expect that to launch until the PS5.
At that point I would also expect a new VR headset, but I could see them integrating roomscale tracking with the PSVR 1.0 version, if they end up going with a multi camera setup instead, which I doubt. Lighthouse is the way to go.
We'll see what they're planning, but it's obvious that the Move controllers will receive an update at some point. It's just a matter of when.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi I don't think it's the power of the console as much as it is the control inputs. The Move button inputs and tracking are not ideal. It needs the precision that the Vive offers. Oculus Rift holds up pretty well too with their Touch controllers, though I personally find the Rift tracking to be more precise.
The Move just needs a refresher. They were a great tech for 2010, and it's impressive that they've held up as well as they do for VR...But they are old, and SONY could not have predicted the exact direction they'd be in 7 years later. I look forward to the redesign and VR integration, as SONY do make pretty nice controller designs, for the most part.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Never said it wasn't though I suspect assets have been reused where possible Sales though sway every decision, if Bethesda make a good enough margin on their PSVR games, it makes a port more likely.
If it came over, I think it would have to use the dualshock and not the move controllers.
@drd7of14 I play through most of fallout 4 with a baseball bat, kinda perfect for VR
Dont temp me bethesda/sony! I swear to god i will quit my job to focus on playing this.
@Rob_230 They'd need to get it up to a rock solid 60 frames, and it struggles to hold 30 as it is right now.
@drd7of14 You could play it with a DualShock 4 to be fair.
Yeah it barely runs as it now! Saying that, even with massively stripped back visuals that type of game could be awesome fun to play in VR.
@get2sammyb Quite true of course, but...That's not nearly as fun. Some games work fine with DS4, like Eve: Valkyrie/Battlezone, but when you can shoot in an FPS style or want to physically grasp objects, motion controls really stand out and assist with the immersion.
I always appreciate standard controller support though, cause as of right now it's the smoothest way to play VR games with movement on PS4. That analogue is pretty important after all.
they could just add Aim support
No. No there is not. I just played some FO4 on my base PS4. My last save loaded up was in front of the Mass Fusion building. It was chugging at like 20-22 fps at most. Now if they did Fallout 3 or New Vegas, I am sure that would run at a dual 60fps nooo problem on the PSVR.. But FO4.. not with the version creation engine that is running on it now.
@ztpayne7 I think Bethesda Game Studios would take advantage of the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the PS Aim controller. I wold be surprised if the VR rifle isn't used in Fallout.
@KleebanKliban I very much disagree. While the vr aim controller is AWESOME (and I have one), it would be far too constricting for a Fallout game. The amount of time the average person holds a 2 handed rifle-Esque weapon (rifles, rocket launchers, etc) is probably not even 50% of the time, and would make the game feel awful upon switching to melee or pistols. Bethesda has shown they support the aim controller - I just don’t think it would work well with this game.
The move controllers would work, as Skyrim has shown. I imagine the only reason they would go that route on this one is to implement the pip boy in a creative way or if they have to keep it as close to Vive as possible.
@ztpayne7 Point taken and very good points at that. Don't get me wrong, I saw the limitations immediately but they are no more an issue than the limitations of the Move Controllers (or DS4 even). With Aim one handed weapons feel weird and melee weapons would probably have to just be used with the trigger so anyone about to play as a tank wouldn't want to use the Aim, but then with Move two handed weapons would feel weird and you don't have as comfortable of directional controls, having to point your indominant hand around to walk different directions.
In Skyrim you can't walk backward while dual casting a destruction spell forward as you back step enemies, but that didn't stop Bethesda from giving us the option to use those controllers. Having to squeeze a trigger to swing a bat would be a minor inconvenience to prevent Bethesda Game Studios from taking advantage of the opportunity to utilize and familiarize themselves with the Aim controller, especially considering how much of a minority of gamers probably melee when they have sufficient ammo.
As for using one handed weapons with Aim or using two handed weapons with Move, at the end of the day gamers know there is no one size fits all option. I would be fine using a one handed gun with the Aim like I do in Doom, and I'd be fine using a two handed gun with the Move. I think the main factors gamers will consider when selecting how to play will be if they want to melee and grab items, or if they want to feel like they are shooting two handed weapons and walk around more intuitively.
At the end of the day so many gamers will want to use ranged weapons with the Aim controller and I believe Bethesda knows that. Two handed ranged weapons are the strongest weapons in the game so once you start finding better guns most gamers are probably using assault rifles, shotguns, SMG's, sniper rifles, rail guns, gauss rifles, launchers, etc. For the occasional gamer that want to run around and go ham with melee weapons, they would just use the Move controllers anyway so Aim wouldn't hurt them. Everyone would just use the controller best suited to how they were about to play.
You could be absolutely right but based on Bethesda's recent trend of getting mixed in with every platform (lately Mobile, VR and Switch) I expect them to take that same attitude toward control options. Obviously Aim would have been ridiculous in Skyrim, save the cross bow, but I think it is well beyond practical enough for Fallout and that Bethesda will do what they do and get their games out to as many gamers in as many ways as possible.
It will happen, and it will be amazing.
