Why is Rockstar the only publisher porting its PS2 Classics to the PlayStation 4? Clearly there’s money to be made with this initiative, and Sony should be trying much harder to encourage more companies to hop aboard.
For now, though, we’re going to have to make do with Rockstar’s wares: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition have all been rated for release on the PS4.
The news comes courtesy of American ratings board the ESRB, so it all looks legit to us. Each of these games will be updated with Trophy support and integration with the PS4’s operating system. Would you buy any of them?

We need original Red Dead on PS4!
Okay well I thought maybe it'd be new Max Payne, but I really enjoyed replaying MP1 via the PS2 classic release last year and I'm a big fan of the second game too, I loved playing that on my PC late at night headphones on back in the day. I'd get it again on PS4 for sure.
Max Payne 3 60fps remaster pls...?
No interest somehow i just dont like GTA.
@Forde999
Could not agree more with this. No better way to crank up interest in the sequel.
@Forde999 Yeah, Red Dead Revolver's out now.
gta vice city and gta liberty city best games ever
"Why is Rockstar the only publisher doing PS2 classics?"
Well, Capcom seems to be willing to do HD remasters, which is fair enough I suppose. SEGA has no idea but seemingly enjoys full on remakes like Kiwami, Konami....Konami...
And to be fair, lead by example. I can think of many first party titles that should be there. But aren't.
To quote Jim Ryan: "Why would anyone want to play that?"
Well Jim, its because those games were fun and the PS2 has one of the most diverse libraries of games ever released. Plus, you guys started the precedent for this backwards compatibility stuff by releasing a system, the PS2, that was hugely successful and had that feature.
At this point it has to be obvious to publishers the world over, looking at Virtual Console, looking at retro consoles, looking at the fact Rockstar is bothering at all, that there is money in older games.
Hell, Capcom knows!
I hope rockstar releases gta series on #nintendoswitch i bet it will sell faster on switch than ps4
Would be awesome if Rockstar patched Vice City on PS4 so the camera can be moved while walking/running. I completely forgot about this and it made me lost interest (if I'm not mistake same applies to 3). Games were awesome back then but it would benefit A LOT from such a simple feature!!
@get2sammyb Yeah meant Red Dead Redemption.
@Kyroki Yep Red Dead Redemption
Sweet, Vice City Stories. I presume these will look a little better being upscaled on PS4?
@ApostateMage Yeah, they'll be upscaled, so obviously still very much PS2 games — but a bit cleaner.
Would love shadow hearts to be remastered but the company that made them no longer exist
I know they're PS3 games but I'd love RDR and GTA IV.
Can't wait to run over pedestrians while driving Phil Collins again. Memories.
TABLE TENNIS
Did you not get my facebook messages Rockstar?
Take my money!!!!
(Drunk and haven't read the story properly)
Might give vice city stories another try. I havent picked it up on vita because it is the psp version (so controls are mapped with only one analogue stick in mind, which is a nightmare for camera). I had it on ps2, but think I was a little bored of gta at the time so didnt get too far on it..
pleased with this news
This sounds great, but, and a big but, how well will those 2 gta games look and play in their PS4 versions.
Overall i like Liberty City Stories more than gta3. There are motorcycles, camera like San Andreas, better aiming, better story, and fun replayable stuff like Avenging Angels.
Vice City Stories also has the better camera and an interesting story but i prefer Vice City.
Not Interested.
Already bought and played these games enough times*
Not interested in rebuying the same thing over and over.
( * well twice once on the ps2 and once on the psp when i saw them cheap )
Man MC3: DE brings back so many memories for me , I played the heck out that game 7th-8th grade 😊
It seems like yesterday I was playing the newly released gta vice city stories on my psp, how time flies.
@BLP_Software and then Sony followed with the fat PS3 which played ps2 & ps1 discs!! The fact that PS4 can't even run ps2 & ps1 discs at the very least bugs the hell outta me!! Terrible
I'll always be down for any gta entries!!!
Finally some more PS2 games. I wish they would release more of these every month
@johnny30 Yeeessss! Loved the Shadow Hearts games
@SuperSilverback same! there were amazing , dark gothic vibe. no rpg has come close, love shadow hearts 1 and 2, 3 wasn't the same. even went back and played the sort of prequel to shadow hearts 1 koudelka
@tonyp1987 based on what reason?
@johnny30 Really that sucks they had great games.
@johnny30 Koudelka one of my favorite PS1 games it was fantastic would buy a remaster at any price.
@GlynCR my theory is since the switch is selling like hotcakes and rockstar prints money everytime they make a game is more reason they should release a game for nintendo switch plus if they deside to release gta v on switch they arent losing money since they made more than the game cost plus they can use the ps3/xbox 360 version but with the extra content from the ps4/xbone/pc version (the animal transformation and etc...)
@tonyp1987 but why would it sell better on Switch than PS4?
@GlynCR because the pick up and play anytime, anywhere opition not tied to a tv.
@tonyp1987 that doesn't mean it'll sell better necessarily
@GlynCR true plus rockstar can push the switch sells even further with a portable/console version of gta v or a gta c9collection
My bottom line will be price point. I still have my old consoles and the games. I am willing to pay for trophies and improvements to a point on PS4. So i see it as a very positive move.
