More than one million people played Gran Turismo Sport’s demo – which has conveniently been rebranded an open beta in recent days – the moment it was made available. Sony allowed PlayStation Plus subscribers to pre-load the 43GB sampler, and there was pent-up enthusiasm within the racing game community for the teaser to turn on its servers – many even spent the weekend watching the title’s stunning Attract Mode.
Of course, the demand has flagged concerns regarding the title’s server stability; with much of the game requiring an online connection for what Polyphony Digital describes as "integrity" reasons, its servers are going to have to be as close to flawless as humanly possible. Right now, they’re pretty flaky, so it’s got little under a week to shore them up prior to release. Good luck Kaz and crew – you’re going to need it.

I am a bit worried by the technical issues (mostly the save feature being wonky), but I'm really glad that they should have some time to fix those before the official launch. Rumors were they weren't running at capacity anyways.
ALSO @get2sammyb was some kind of wizard on one of the hard braking missions. None of my times or my friends times were even close (relatively).
I don't like racing simulator but this game is fun, it's like playing rpg with all the level-up, still need to work on my (lack of) cornering skill though
I only tried the first training level and a couple of tracks, but I enjoyed it. Not typically my type of game, but I might pick this up eventually.
@wiiware The Circuit Experience mode is the single best tool I've ever used in a racing game. It will clean those cornering skills up in no time!
If this had been decently sized, I would have tried it. I wonder how many were on the same boat.
Success will be defined by sales not a Free download. From the general online reaction, it seems the lack of a proper offline career mode has upset an awful lot of people and will have a massive impact on sales.
I downloaded the demo and it's done a cracking job of convincing not to bother buying the game. I am partly thankful for it though as it's saved me £40.
What on earth possessed them to make this an Online only game with a virtually none existent offline career mode?
I've read a few articles that indicate out of approximately 60 million PS4 owners, only 26 million have an active PS plus account.
Now I'm no expert but that's an awful lot of your fans to alienate, especially when it's one of your Flagship games that a lot of people stay loyal to the Playstation brand for.
I could go on & on because I feel so strongly about it but I simply don't have the time. To say I'm disappointed is an understatment
The online component was great but there were far too many times where penalties affected the wrong person and this makes me not want to purchase the game until this is fixed
@Marios-love-child "hat on earth possessed them to make this an Online only game with a virtually none existent offline career mode?"
I don't really get this mentality. Other than a smaller track count and a much smaller car count, what is really missing from the single player? If you still want to race NPC, you can. You get credits/exp from Aracde mode this time too. You also get WAY MORE missions/training. There is far more single player content in this game than most give credit for.
@NathanUC
For me (and most others) Gran Turismo it about earning your Licences and working your way through the different cup competitions.
Starting off with a crapy slow car, earning money to tune up the car and buy better cars and fill up your garage.
This new game doesn't have any of that, the game is a shadow of it's former self
@NathanUC Exactly, GT's so called career mode was just getting licences and a few cups and that was it. But somehow people think their entitled to something different despite the fact the game is giving something different.
@Marios-love-child It's a different type of GT game, hence why it's called Sport.
@Marios-love-child You can get a REAL FIAA license (sort of) from GT Sport.... It still has the same types of license challenges only FAR MORE of them. If you liked the License tests, you should LOVE GT Sport... You're still working your way up through challenges/missions, so I still don't get this complaint.
I get the whole 'start with a slow crappy car' thing. That's the only point I can even remotely agree with you on. That part of GT will be missed.
@Marios-love-child Hopefully they port Gran Turismo 6 to PS4 then lol ... I see your beef, I feel the same way, but after trying out the beta the past few days I really enjoy "Sport". I'm being open minded to it, and as a long time fan of the Gran Turismo I'm buying the game on launch and continuing my career.
@adf86
"It's a different type of GT game, hence why it's called Sport."
Adding the word Sport shouldn't detract from the fact this is still a Gran Turismo game.
In normal day to day life if you add the word Sport onto something it usually implies that it's a better product. i.e if you go out and buy a Ford Focus but buy the Sport version instead of the Ecoboost you should be getting a better product and more for your money.
With this GT Sport version the offline side of the game is none existent in comparison to previous games so it feels like we're getting a lesser product. Not everyone has PS plus & not everyone wants to play online. For those that don't (and there are plenty) this game isn't really worth their time.
We could sit and argue our points all day buy my point is that the lack of an offline career mode has upset an awful lot of people, you only have to read a few online forums or GT Sport adverts on Facebook to see how upset everyone is with it.
As someone who doesn't particularly enjoy gaming online I just feel very frustrated by it because the main reason I bought a ps4 in the first place was for a decent GT game,
Yeah all of the license challenges and stuff are still in there. The only thing its missing really is the progression of starting with a banger and working your way up to a proper racing car, but I think that's an outdated formula nowadays.
I do understand why people are disappointed, but I think they made the right move to refresh the whole format. Especially now I've seen how it all works.
@Marios-love-child Did you try the demo because there's more to it than I think the developer itself has led people to believe? There were endurance races in the demo, for example.
@get2sammyb
If that's the case then that's great, I may well pick it up at some point I'll probably wait to read a few reviews once the game has been released properly before committing myself though.
Unfortunately all the demo did was make me cancel my pre-order
I did one lap with all electronic assists on. Then spend half an hour trying to find the settings to turn it off. Then the game crashed on me 3 times in a row and I didnt have any more time.
Im not buying this for full retail I know that much.
@Flurpsel Yeah there's a weird bug in the beta that caused it keep crashing for some people. Really weird as it only seemed to affect certain people.
@Marios-love-child A few angry people online doesn't exactly make up the entire game's demographic though. They are more knocking the game for what it isn't rather then what it actually is.
Dunno why some are angry from what i saw the demo was amazing.
@adf86
a few is being generous, try the vast majority
You say people are knocking it for what it isn't rather than what it is.
This is Gran Turismo for heavens sake, it's Sony's Flagship Racing Sim, we're not talking about some generic racing game from an unknown indie developer, the absolute bare minimum people should be able to expect is a decent offline mode to play around with. People expect better than this.
If you went to Mcdonalds to buy a cheese burger but Mcdonalds didn't bother to put any Cheese on it, would you accept that? I very much doubt you would, you'd be back at the counter complaining that one of the major ingredients is missing. I know its a Silly comparison but a Cheese Burger without the Cheese is just a burger. Gran Turismo without it's fully fleshed single player mode isn't Gran Turismo
I don't mean to be argumentative but I just feel so strongly about it
@get2sammyb happened every time I pressed the options button from the main menu.
@Marios-love-child It does have single player, there's challenges, endurance races, time trials and local MP, it's just some are judging it before they play it. And angry commenters online isn't the majority. The majority are those that will see the AD's and think "that looks awesome" and will buy it.
@adf86
I think we'll just have to agree to disagree
@Marios-love-child I agree Respect.
I've had 3 or 4 system errors when playing but I really like the gameplay and it looks great. Looking forward to the full title
I love the demo. Can anyone tell me, when does it end?
I enjoyed it but I am a GT nut. I liked browsing other people's photos and liveries, there were some crackers, most of them Japanese.
@Mart1ndo_ Today, I think.
I enjoyed the demo very much... At first I wasn't even going to be bothered with the game, due to the lack of the typical SP we've gotten with GT games, but even after playing Project Cars 2... GT is still getting my money. Gameplay is king in my book, and GT never lets me down. The driving feels smooth and perfect. I can still do offline races if I want and they still matter... I am officially pumped for this game and they have my pre-order.
I really enjoyed it, it's put the game firmly on my radar. My fave bit was accelerating to 60 mph and managing to stop in under 10 seconds. Then I got a replay with rousing music like I'd killed the dragon and been crowned emperor! Awesome!!
Yeah, I've caught a "no connection" problem yesterday and...
...and this frankly put a damper on my otherwise positive impression. All I could do offline is browse settings and other menus??? Even simple single races were completely grayed out! I'm used to seeing this stuff in F2Ps and heavily online-bent games like Overwatch (although I think even Overwatch has some kind of warmup rooms, no?), but a racing simply with no trace of offline single player... Somebody tell me it's just the demo's quirk. ¿:^o
Like I said, though, a neat experience otherwise. Plus - in spite of all the Nintendo fans' laments about "no analogue triggers on Switch, no simulators" - this game offers a control option to use X and Square with a straight face. That's how I've been driving all the time (L2/R2 are mapped to Vita's touchscreen - how's THAT for analogue triggers' alternative? XD), and it proves to be absolutely playable.
Any game which requires an internet connection to play a good portion of it is definitely one to leave until a week or two after launch if you want to be sure of a good connected experience.
@Marios-love-child I like the part with the cheeseburger. Solid comparison
Looking forward to getting my Collector's Edition in the mail
It was boring. I played mainly for the graphics and even that was a let down. The car models are phenomenal, but everything else I felt was a step down from Drive Club.
@1eyedlink
I thought it was a pretty decent way to analyse things and put things in to perspective lol
Eagerly awaiting the review!
Took by surprise, are you kidding? It's freackin Gran Turismo, one of the biggest series on PS.
@Marios-love-child Exactly! This is why i wont be getting it until later down the line once it is really cheap.
They need to hire some people that can model nature assets. The game looks beautiful until a tree or some grass appears. It's night and day levels of quality between the cars and nature. Cars, PS4 levels. Nature, PS3 (at best) levels. Strange.
I know it's not about trees and grass etc. But it pulls you out visually, when you see such a huge difference in quality.
I am so very torn on whether to buy this game. I just don't like online racing, I have only ever experienced either ridiculously skilful players I stand no chance of competing with or, at the other end of the spectrum, players who ram you off the road.
Without a proper single player campaign my interest is much reduced, I don't care for the mission type structure, I want a career as per previous titles.
Having said all that, it is such a great looking game and I love how GT titles play.....perhaps I'll wait till it's a little cheaper.
@SoulChimera
I don't think they are noticeable in motion, sometimes in replays they can stand out a little but overall, I think they have to prioritise where they spend their available processing power.
