There’s honestly never been a better time to purchase PlayStation VR, as more and more promising titles continue to pad out the release schedule. And over in North America, Sony’s decided to make the headset more affordable for the time being, with the headset going as low as $199.99 starting Sunday, 18th February through Saturday, 3rd March.
This is the latest PSVR headset model with HDR passthrough, and you can find out more about the PSVR CUH-ZVR1 vs CUH-ZVR2 differences through the link. Alternatively, the platform holder’s knocking $100 off the DOOM VFR and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR bundles respectively – the latter of which comes with a PlayStation Camera and two PlayStation Move controllers.
There’s more information on the PlayStation Blog, but we’d seriously recommend taking advantage of this if you’re in the market for a virtual reality headset. Sprint Vector’s literally just released and taken Push Square Towers by storm, while the likes of Moss and Bravo Team are right on the horizon. It’s a perfect time to jump in.

A nice price but still not jumping in with out trying first. Since I have no way of doing that I'm going to have to pass.
I wonder what I would get for a trade in of my psvr unit. The hdr passthrough would be nice.
Well, that Skyrim bundle looks tempting...
I am not from USA so nothing for me here but it was on 50% sale for black friday at my local store, shame my wallet wasn't ready for such a big purchase at that time.
Good price, although it'd be more tempting if it actually came with the camera you need to do anything in VR.
Tempting for sure but I'm still not 100% sold on VR.
I hate you Sony. Stop tempting me!
Gotta hand it to them, they are really supporting VR.
Still not buying into VR.
Are you POSITIVE it's the new headset for $199? Because over on the always-useless Blog, it's not so clear. Even when you click their "more info" button, it's just three images of the old Xmas bundles. And the $199 has GT Sport with it still....and that had the old model.
No way would I get into PSVR at this point. It's still in the testing things out phase and I don't want to deal with that. Plus, I hate motion controls. I'd prefer to just use my regular controller for everything but that's not the direction the games seem to be going.
@Ralizah yeah, the $199 is so misleading, unless, for some reason, you have a camera already. At least the Skyrim bundle has everything you need (including a seven year old game!)
I'm going to look into this deal, at only $199, I'm definitely in.
I already have Move controllers from the PS3 and a PS4 camera.
I also got a PS4 Pro last month during a killer GameStop promotion.
I'm a 3D fan too and I like the idea of the headset as a backup 3D display.
My son asked me just the other day if we were ever getting the PSVR, and I was like..well maybe.
Our first game will be Rush of Blood, since we already own it from Plus.
My only concern at this moment, is whether the non-bundle $199 unit is the newer HDR compatible one (?).
@Splat Its boss. I would recommend going to egx or a demo unit somewhere and trying it out.
@Yowza If the testing things out phase means amazing games like statik and Destruction ball who cares? If your not living on the edge you are taking up too much space.
@EVIL-C why not its flipping great? If you havent tried it go and do it!
Good to see some people tempted towards buying a set. I know vr has gone off the boil lately and for good reason, the good and proper vr experiences are expensive and pretty cumbersome right now. But that doesnt mean these experiences are rubbish. On the contrary, its f!#'ing outstanding!
I can't convince myself it's worth getting into but a decent price drop here in the UK and I'd be sorely tempted
Updated with some Amazon links for the discounted bundles.
Europe?
I'm interested in getting VR to try it and promptly sell it if I don't like it (since I can't f***n find one to try it -.-)! Hope I like it and keep it though
Wow that is very cheap. Lucky USA. I got mine day one for £350 - which is around $490 on todays exchange, so that sounds like a fantastic deal.
I'm getting my tax refund this month so if Sony could just bring the price of the PS4 to $200 again, that would be great.
@get2sammyb Nice update. The $199 GT Sport is sparse in the US, I tried Target, Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop, had to settle for B&H Camera - see link below.
@Yowza "yeah, the $199 is so misleading, unless, for some reason, you have a camera already."
Camera comes w/ the GT Sport bundle I ordered this afternoon for $199.99. I'm almost 100% it IS the old headset though. And no Move controllers or headphones.

@Gamer83 " Tempting for sure but I'm still not 100% sold on VR."
I was going to ask you which games to get, so at least you're spared my harassment.
@sinalefa "Stop tempting me!"
They got me, can ya believe it? Ordered the GT Sport bundle this morning. Jax sort of advised me against it, but it was too late. (and yeah, I posted on here, again, I think sammy only updated the article cause I kept annoying him on twitter, poor guy)
@Ralizah "Good price, although it'd be more tempting if it actually came with the camera you need to do anything in VR."
All 3 bundles, GT Sport, Doom, Skyrim, come w/ the PS4 camera.
@rjejr
You may want to try RE VII in VR. I didn't play the game to completion using it but I did get a chance to demo it a bit. Still, one game is not enough to drop $199.
Maybe for the Rick and Morty vr game I would buy this but other than that, no thanks.
200 is still too much for an accessory you only going to use seldom.
I bought my PS4 camera a couple years back. It was totally worth the purchase to play the free Ninja bot games. Now I am ready to get more use out of it and ready to pick up that $199 PSVR set.
@Sammy- Can you post a link directly to that $199 model
@Gamer83 Resident Evil VII is terrifying in VR; I lasted all of 15 minutes, and nothing happened for the first 10. It really is a great demo of the power of VR, though. It's incredibly immersive.
@RidingMower I can't seem to find the $199.99 at many places. Try @rjejr's link — that appears to still be in stock.
@Sammy- Thank you, and rjejr for that link. That price and the knockout League game is actually the last straw to make me cave in and purchase one... Well played Sammy, well played indeed
@Gamer83 "one game is not enough to drop $199."
No one is't, It's funny though, I dont' really want to play any games w/ that headset on. I can't imainge spending 150 hours playing Zelda or Horizon or a JRPG like that. I just want all of the short 15 minute experiences. And right now there are a couple dozen of those. And we got 3 games w/ PS+ and there are about 20 tech demos. For my kids and I that was enough to do it. For me, I'd never get it at any price, too much work, but I like being the cool dad.
@rjejr
If they put a bunch of actually good sports-mini game collections on PSVR, I might be more tempted at $200. A three-point contest, Slam Dunk, some events from the NHL All-Star skills competition, Home Run Derby... I'd be down for that stuff in VR.
@Gamer83 Sports Collection seems like something they should have had at launch. Would be cool letting you bat against known pitchers like Randy Johnson or Noah Syndygard, seeing how fast a 100mph fastball looks in real life. Well fake real life, but you know what I mean. I know one MLB The Show game had home run derby w/ Move a few years back. Trying to dribble past a life sized VR LeBron would be interesting. They'd just need to let you enter your height when you when started. In my head it would be very difficult to mimic the movements of ice hockey in PSVR, maybe HTC Vive or one of those that's made for movement. I wouldn't mind just standing still and hitting a few penalty slapshots at Lundquist though. I played a lot of street hockey on foot as a teen, never really could ice or roller skate.
On the bright side, while VR may not be bigly catching on, I think the potential is still there for it to stick around and we shoul;d see better games in the future. Move may have fell off a cliff, and Wonderbook was a bad joke, but Sony has had PS cameras since at least PS2 Eye, and Wii may be a distant memory but my kid only plays ARMS w/ full motion. And whatever Nintendo Labo is. So I personally think PSVR sticks around, and we get PSVR 2 near or at the PS5 launch. Higher resolution would be nice. And a whole lot less wires and no secondary box, just simple plug & play.
I still really don't like FPS games, so PSVR gaming isn't for me, but I do like the experience, and a sports compilation sounds like something a lot of people could get into. Playing as a QB getting sacked by LT, throw in some surround sound bone breaking sounds. I bet a lot of people flinch and cringe and scream.
@rjejr
If they got you then the price is right. Did you try it somewhere? Still havent had the chance.
@sinalefa I tried it at PS Experience a couple of summers ago. I was kind of blown away. I was expecting that 3D stuff I had been doing on my iPod Touch and smartphones but it really isn't comparable to that. This isn't about gaming w/ graphics and frames per sec, it's all about tricking your brain into thinking you are in a different place. It really is the true definition of "virtual reality", you are stepping into a virtual world. Now once I had to move the illusion was ruined but for about 5 minutes it was all an out loud "wow" and "holy cow". I don't really plan on ever gaming in their, I just like the experience of being in a virtual world. I'm all about roller coaster and spaceship rides.
As to why now, I wrote a long explanation to Jax over at NL. I've posted on here 3x, I'm sure to get in trouble eventually, might as well be now.
Yeah, I'm kinda already regretting my purchase. But sometimes I get caught up in the moment and the zeitgeist and it just feels right.
Playing the Vive last night, we have company coming next weekend to show it off too, my son's friend, who is also big into video games, is spending the night Thursday, we have several VR games from PS+, we have 2 Move controllers (charging 'em now) from PS3, and my kid has been bugging me since we got a PS4 for the camera for Playroom. So $217 for the headset, camera and GT Sport, which will be traded into GS by Friday for $20 to cover the tax.
It was just one of those things where circumstances converged. So a little regret now, some fun for a few months, then more regret later. My son wants Skyrim, he's into all of that motion stuff, he's really enjoying ARMS, so maybe it will get some long term use. Not a lot, not on a regular basis, but enough.
Having just dropped my cable bill from $150 to $50 will also come up as I explain all that to the Mrs. 😆
So not "destiny", but synchronicity.
OK, here's my weekend VR sale story...
Went out looking for VR bundles and checked model #s and such.
To everyone's disappointment, the new 2.0 HDR model will run you $299+.
But then I came across a returned (10% off) GT bundle at Walmart.
Everything was minty inside, someone just looked thru it and took it back.
Final price was $179 +tax with new camera and a seal copy of GT PS4.
Took it home to do the setup and sadly the breakout box really is 1.4 HDMI.
No HDR or WCG pass-thru, which is super disappointing in 2018.
I had a faint hope some of the GT bundles might have newer HDMI chips.
It's bizarre to me that Sony put better HDMI chips in launch PS4s in 2013.
Anyway, the VR experience is definitely a hoot and a blast of fresh air.
There's a 3D Centipede-style mini-game in the VR Playroom that sold me.
Monsters are rushing at you and tower over you, its pretty amazing.
Based on one night, my 10-year-old son absolutely loves VR.
But objectively, the visor graphics are a noticeable step down from PS4.
And if you've played 4K games on the Pro, it's an even bigger step down.
This is an odd moment for Sony, they are pushing two different angles.
TV graphics are getting more & more amazing and VR is fairly low Rez.
But VR gives you that 'you are there' feeling that even 4K can't provide.
