On the game's official Twitter feed, it has been announced that Yakuza 6: The Song of Life will be delayed from 20th March to 17th April. No real reason was given, but we assume the game needed that little bit of extra time to get everything polished up as much as possible.
The statement continues, announcing that there will be a demo made available on 27th February. Any progress made in this demo will be transferable to the full game, so it seems worth a download.
Here's the statement in full:
Will you be playing the Yakuza 6 demo? Are you disappointed by the delay? Try to avoid a street fight in the comments below.

As @get2sammyb pointed out to me earlier, this puts it almost toe to toe with God of War.
Boooo!
Three days before God of War and I believe Nintendo Labo is the same week. Huge blunder by Sega and the localization team. Of course I'll still be there day one but sales have never been huge for this series to begin with and I'll now be shocked if it even reaches 100K to 150K lifetime. My hopes for Kiwami 2 and any future Yakuza games have officially been shot down now.
Could this be for censorship reasons?
NOOOO WTF!
Kill me, I'm done with this life
@Kogorn733
I doubt it. Changing the more 'weird Japanese stuff' wouldn't do anything for sales and frankly there are games on the market with far worse content anyway.
I know that its now competing with god of war but march has far cry 5, devil may cry collection, and assassin's creed rogue for me so this gives my wallet a breather lol
No. No. Noooooooooooo!
Will still be a Day 1 purchase, but God of War takes precedence.
Does no one at Sega check release dates?
@Gamer83
Labo hits the exact same day as GoW.
Dumb Sega as usual. Delays are fine but you need to time it correctly. Even a week after it would be better.
I’m usually ok with delays but not so much for this. Not a good timing but still day 1 for me.
It's an obvious day 1 for me but as soon as GOW comes out I have to put this on hold...so sad!
@sinalefa
Yeah, so basically Yakuza 6 has no chance. Labo is going to be massive, God of War likely is going to be big among the PlayStation fanbase (though the last one did flop). A niche Japanese game is just going to get overshadowed. Should've really just delayed it until June right around E3 and asked Sony to play it up a bit there.
Bandai Namco and Project Aces could learn a thing or two from this, offering a demo / early preview of the game is a proper apology for a delay! and offering progress transfer is icing on the cake!
@Kidfried Agree with this. Labo might do very well, but fail to see how it could be competition to Yakuza. Completely different platforms, aimed at completely different audiences. The proximity to God of War is certainly an issue. Hopefully given the positive reaction to Yakuza 0, there is a long tail on this one. Really dont want another situation where yakuza fails to sell so Sega interpret it as not being wanted in the West.
Level 5/Namco must be delighted to have a more open run with Ni No Kuni 2 in March
@Kidfried This is the 7th game in the series and the stories are told chronologically, so in my humble opinion you should play 0 and Kiwami first
@Kidfried
I'd say if you're looking for an awesome game to jump into right now, get Yakuza 0. It's long enough that by the time you're done, 6 should be out though I would also recommend if you've never played the series to also play Kiwami before 6.
Noooo. Well that probably works alright with the school schedule.
@Gamer83
It is like Sega knows how many copies they usually sell and dont want to make any effort to grow the audience.
Havent played a Yakuza since 3 so I have a lot of options before this one.
@sinalefa
Sega is a lot like Capcom. I still like both companies, they make some of my favorite games, but the business and marketing decisions just make me shake my head or roll my eyes.
It's only another month wait. I know it'll contend with God of War, but I'll be sure to give up time with Kratos to spend it with Kiryu.
News of two big delays back-to-back. Why do I get a sinking feeling that this is going to be a trend and everything will end up crunching in together late in the year.
@Rob_230 That's a good point, I guess the Ni no Kuni delay has actually worked out pretty well.
I've always been interested in this series but never enough to buy a game, so this demo is something im really looking forward to. I'm afraid I might really enjoy it though, and buy all the games!
Maybe they rather have it up against a mainstream audience game like God of War instead of another niche audience title like no no Kuni 2.
Yakuza 6, day 1. God of War can wait, they'll get their money anyways.
I needed a break. Monster Hunter, dragon Ball, shadow of the Colossus. I'm only starting Yakuza zero. Give me some room please. I do have my eye on the .hack series next though.
Not a concern, and also ... we get a demo? that's good. I always have a tad more respect for developers who give us demos, than those who don't.
@AnimeGamerFan
I love the series too but the way Sega has handled in North America and Europe has been... Questionable at times, to say the least.
