The latest major PS4 firmware update is upon us, and as usual brings with it a host of brand new features to enhance your PlayStation experience. One of the main additions in PS4 firmware update 5.50 is system-wide supersampling for PS4 Pro. This feature allows your PS4 Pro-enchanced games to output to their fullest, even on TVs with a resolution less than 4K. The game will output at the maximum resolution, then your PS4 Pro will shrink the image down to fit your television, giving you a much more detailed and sharper image. If this sounds good to you, you'll want to know how to enable the feature, and that's where we come in.
How to Enable System-Wide Supersampling for PS4 Pro
Follow these steps and you'll be able to take advantage of this brand new feature.
Head to 'Sound and Screen' in the Settings Menu
Navigate to the Settings menu on your PS4 Pro and scroll down to 'Sound and Screen'. In here, you'll want to select 'Video Output Settings', which is the first option.
Select 'Supersampling Mode'
Scroll down to 'Supersampling Mode'. This takes you to another screen, which details the new feature. To enable Supersampling Mode, check the box, then hit 'OK'. That's all there is to it.

@Cpt_Price From what I understand, the option basically tricks games into thinking you have a 4K screen. So if you have a 4K screen my (slightly educated) guess would be that it wouldn't have any effect since the PS4 Pro understands it's hooked up to a 4K screen. Hopefully someone with more info can swoop in and answer this further for you.
So if I have a 4K tv, then we wouldn’t want to turn this on? Because this only for 1080p non 4K right?
@Cpt_Price sorry didn’t see this until I asked the same ? Lol
@smythelove Yeah, ignore if you've got a 4K panel.
@get2sammyb Thank you 😊
Just done it, looks a lot nicer, will need to experiment with a few games though!

You were saying last year you were looking to get a 4K tv. Did you manage to get one? If not between now and the end of April is when the majority of the current range get reduced and cleared out ready for the new refresh range. I had a LG B6 which rtings rated as the best 4K HDR gaming tv for 2016. The Oled picture is beautiful. The current B7 is rated the best for 2017. I payed £3k for mine but you can get the B7 for about £1.7k currently and I reckon over the next month you should be able to save a couple hundred more.
Edit. Don’t take my word for it here’s some good reviews of all current TVs https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-usage/video-gaming
if anyone here also has the xbox one x there is also a little trick you can play around with if you have a 4k tv and want to try the super sample mode out. basically if you have a 4k tv the super sampling mode doesnt work . it says so when you click on it. however plug the ps4 pro hdmi into the hdmi in on the xbox one x and change the output to 1080p on the ps4 pro. you will notice that it now thinks your 4k tv is only a 1080p and youll be able to turn super sampling on. the xbox one x now displays a 2160p image of a 4k image thats been downsampled to a 1080p display but the xbox one x is upscaling this new supersampled image at 2160p. looks pretty nice. tested need for speed payback in this way and i thought it looked better supersampled than it did in whatever resolution it is on the pro on a 4k tv.
@smythelove the supersampling mode doesnt even give you the option to turn it on or off if you have a 4k tv. it just says super sampling not supported
@s777eventhheaven Ok thank you good info!
i assume this doesn't override your settings choice within a game and only works if the output is more than 1080p? since i only have a HD screen, i always choose performance mode in games. not sure i'd personally notice the difference between the native 1080p image and one supersampled from higher res, so i'll probably just leave the option disabled.
This is a nice feature for when I get a PS5 and hook it to my 4k screen in the living room. My Pro then moves to my bedroom with a Full HD tv.
Futureproof! Unless I buy a better TV.
Boost mode + super sampling = fan noise! Worth it though.
@s777eventhheaven using the xbox's hdmi in adds a huge delay though. so there's really no point to it.
