Welcome to the Fantasy Zone, folks! As leaked overnight, SEGA is resurrecting over 50 releases from its iconic 16-bit era as part of the SEGA Genesis Classics collection for the PlayStation 4. Titled differently outside of the United States, this is a console port of the meaty compilation that released on Steam recently. It includes everything from Altered Beast to Space Harrier II.
The really cool thing is that every title will come with a host of bonus features, including Mirror Mode, Rewind, and various visual filters. At the right price, this could be well worth the admission fee for retro gaming fans. The set’s due out on 29th May.
Update (16:00 GMT): SEGA's released the full list of games included in this compilation. Notable absentees include Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles for some reason:
- Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
- Alien Soldier
- Alien Storm
- Altered Beast
- Beyond Oasis
- Bio-Hazard Battle
- Bonanza Bros.
- Columns
- Columns III: Revenge of Columns
- Comix Zone
- Crack Down
- Decap Attack
- Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
- Dynamite Headdy
- ESWAT: City Under Siege
- Fatal Labyrinth
- Flicky
- Gain Ground
- Galaxy Force II
- Golden Axe
- Golden Axe II
- Golden Axe III
- Gunstar Heroes
- Kid Chameleon
- Landstalker
- Light Crusader
- Phantasy Star II
- Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
- Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium
- Ristar
- Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
- Shining Force
- Shining Force II
- Shining in the Darkness
- Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master

my childhood on a disc
SIGN ME UP!
Potentially really interested. I need to see the tile list and it has to have Sonic 3 + Knuckles!
@Feena Pretty confident this will be the full list: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/102625/
At the right price, I could definitely get on board with this.
Awesome. Great timing now that Wii Shop is closing and taking lots of Sega games down with it.
Finally, I get my face on the front page of Push Square!

(i just copy/Pasted it)
Oh man, if it is the Steam games we'll get Landstalker. So good.
Still want a few Master System games rolled in too. Need Phantasy Star 1 and Axe Battler.
Do each of these games have a trophy list or is it just one list for the collection?
@Simon_Fitzgerald Don't know yet. If they're individual then this will have like 500 Trophies!
The Switch port begging on that tweet 😂😂😂.
May pick this up sometime down the line.
Doubt I will bother myself - I am not that nostalgic and never really bothered playing the MegaDrive collection on Last Gen hardware. It was great to show my Son what gaming was once like but I out-grew these as technology improved to deliver much better games/experiences. Its great for those that are nostalgic and those that missed out the first time around to show what gaming was and how far we have come but its not for me...
@get2sammyb That'd be insane XD
Sold! It would be great to play Vectorman and Comix Zone again.
I hope it has that Sonic pinball game Loved that but still can't get into the normal Sonic games tho. I just can't get into them really. Incredible video tho
@get2sammyb @FullbringIchigo Thank you so much! If these are the games, it's SOLD! Finally a way to play sonic 3+ Knuckles + Landstalker.
Where's James Pond at?
Added in full list. Sorry @Feena, Sonic 3's not in this for some weird reason. No Sonic CD either.
Ehhh.. just a few too many of my favourites missing for me to be too interested. Still, the three SoR titles make me think i'll probably get it.
But no Ecco/Ecco Tides of Time is a problem for me (yes, I do like these games!) and Empire of Steel would have turned it into an instant buy.
@get2sammyb @Feena yeah i just saw the post on the PS Blog and it sucks
https://blog.eu.playstation.com/2018/03/14/sega-mega-drive-classics-featuring-over-50-iconic-games-hits-ps4-on-29th-may/
@get2sammyb nwoooo why Sonic 3 ;_;
No James Pond, No Ecco the Dolphin, No Sonic 3, No sale.
@Feena you should see how may people on social media are complaining about it (that and the fact there is no Switch version)
i can see SEGA adding them later on, they will probably try to charge us for them too as DLC
@FullbringIchigo dlc??? as long as I can have it...switch version would be a good fit tbh but not even Nintendo has put Snes games on it, they are as weird as always with their marketing decisions...
@Feena yeah who knows what SEGA was thinking on this one, it was a guaranteed goldmine but they still managed to mess it up
No Sonic 3 & Knuckles again, Sonic Jam on the Saturn was the last time we were able to play the game in full as intended. It must be a nightmare to port over or something.
Shining Force. One of the best games I ever played
I'm buying this for Toejam & Earl and Streets of Rage. Everything else is a bonus.
What is always missing (aside Sonic 3+K) in these compilations are the Disney titles like Castle of Illusion, Quack Shot, Alladin... And MJ'S Moonwalker. Licensing problems for sure but they were a huge part of the library.
Sega genesis the best word up son
Cool. So now I won't have to buy the three Phantasy Star games from the Wii shop. Plus, this will probably cost the same as just those three games but now I'll get 47 more games.
Shining Force 1 and 2 on Ps4?Sold!oh I get a few other games with that?Awesome
Shame about Sonic 3 & Knuckles.. BUT Gunstar Heroes, all the Streets of Rage games, Shinobi, Biohazard Battle. This is a for sure pre-order
Awesome, I hope there are some extra hidden goodies. Such as arcade games and Japanese version of these games.
I wish they could make a deal without EA to include their games. As it is, this is more or less the same as the PS3 collection, isn’t it?
Same as steam version wonder if you get the 3d bedroom and console like the steam version had it's rather clever pick a game of the 3d wooden shelf and the cart inserts in to console and it turns itself on
A lot of classics missing here, probably due to licensing issues. No krustys fun house, lion king, aladdin, castle of illusion, jurassic park, spider man, micro machines, chuck rock, james pond, cool spot etc. Just the same games that were on the ps3 collection. Great games, just over utilised
While it would be more expensive, I would rather cherry-pick some games, instead of buying all of them.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi coz it's tear inducingly difficult. Literally, I remember getting battered by the last boss when I was 8 on Tides of Time (I went through hell getting there and I don't think I've ever been as good at video games as I was then) and I went out by bedroom and just collapsed in a heap of tears halfway down the stairs. Seriously emotionally damaging stuff.
Just a few more than the PS3 version, which included Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
I am equally happy and disappointed with this list having owned the collection on both 360 and the trimmed down vita version;
Landstalker
Dynamite Headdy
Gunstar Heroes
Amazing. Makes me want to rebuy this new and improved collection.
But no Sonic 3, Hang On, Outrun, sports games, proper 2d shoot em ups or 32x games is really frustrating. Snes mini has a few fx chip games and it would be a nice bonus to play knuckles chaotix or the 32x virtua fighter rather than the awful megadrive version.
The Genesis Collection was my first platinum trophy on PS3.
This would still have to be fairly cheap for me to be interested though. Raspberry Pi (or even cell phone) and all.....
I'd love a proper Vita or Switch version of this.
I already have the Genesis collection on Steam, though, so I'm going to pass on this.
I get why some aren't her but I wish it had the following-
Aladdin
Lion king
Cool Spot
Road Rash 1,2 & 3
Jungle Strike
Global Gladiators
Mega Bomberman
Castle of illusion
James Pond Robocod
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Like I say I get SEGA don't own the rights to all these but that's my Mega Drive wishlist.
Maybe I'll get this. There's some new stuff I'd be interested in that wasn't on the PS3 collection.
Sonic 3 is available on so many other formats, so it's not that big a loss.
Haunting ft. Polterguy needs another revival!
@kyleforrester87 Ecco the Dolphin used to wind me up as a kid, I always wondered why make an underwater game but make you play as something that has to breathe air, wasn't a bad game though.
Some other games is like to see on these are all the Disney games such as Aladdin, Castle/World of Illusion, then games like Home Alone, Ghostbusters, Sonic 3 and Knuckles obviously, Warsong and perhaps some Master System Sonic games and Alex Kidd in Miracle World
@get2sammyb as i never had sega console before, are you considering a review list for these games, or reviews for the paramount ones?
@JoeBlogs It's not available for direct download in NA. I think you can transfer it via PS3, but I don't have one of those, so unfortunately I'm out of luck.
@Ronnie1969 We'll review it as a compilation, doubt we'll do them all individually, though.
Can we have a new law passed which states that after 20 years or so of inactivity all licensed games can be re-released as part of a compilation by the original platform holder? Nobody really loses out as by and large those licenses have been passed to people who had nothing to do with the original games anyway
@Ronnie1969 why not just Google reviews for the original games? They won't be any different on this compilation
This seems like it’s bit worse than the PS43 Sonic Genesis Collectuons. I expect more games than that, which is a lot of games.
@kyleforrester87
Agreed, needs a shooting and driving game or two.
Meh, pretty much own most of my favorites across PC, Sony, and Nintendo platforms so that's a skip. Would be more interested in taking these on-the-go.
I'm probably in the minority, but I'd like to see Castlevania: Bloodlines re-released in a collection like this. Of course, Konami probably doesn't give a crap about old-school fans like me.
@kyleforrester87 Ecco is included... along with Ecco Jr and Tides of Time.
@starhops I don't see it on the list?
@kyleforrester87 In Sammy's post (#3) is the link to the Steam list and it's supposed to be the same. But maybe I missed an updated version?
@starhops yeah I think that comment was posted, and then later at 4pm the main article was updated (if you re-read it you'll see) and then the final list is below it, again in the main article. Unless I'm going mad. You made me look for Ecco for about 5 minutes though
@kyleforrester87 Well, poop. Sorry about that. I was excited to get dolphin tortured again. This is missing too many for me to grab up unless it was cheap.
