Aw, isn't that a nice nostalgic touch? Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of An Elusive Age will provide players with a cool little bonus in the form of a free Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King costume. According to Square Enix, you'll find this outfit in your inventory when you start the game, and it'll give you a defensive boost when equipped. You'll even be able to upgrade it later on in your adventure.
If you're unfamiliar with the costume, it's what the hero from the aforementioned Dragon Quest VIII wore. Speaking of which, Dragon Quest VIII was the last mainline Dragon Quest title to release on PlayStation platforms here in the West, and that was back on the PlayStation 2, so we suppose it makes sense to have a throwback that veteran fans of the series may recognise.

that's awesome, i'll SO be using that
Yay cannot wait to play this
Anybody play this yet? It released a year ago in Japan and I know some of you like to import stuff.
I'm really on the fence. I'm finishing up NNK2 now, which I thought would hold me over on JRPG for awhile, but while it's a good game it's more a city building sim than a JRPG. It's good, but it's like watching a Saturday morning cartoon good. One with almost no voice acting. DQXI is turn based, which I'm nto a huge fan of, but I've seen them running around enough in game play vids that I think it could be a nice change of pace. I guess the real question is how;s the story? I feel like I haven't' played a really great story driven JRPG since the original XC. FFXV was bleh, XCX had no story, NNK was actually ok, though I hated the Pokemon aspect. I still haven't played XC2, waiting on the DLC.
DQVIII was a great game on PS2, still the only DQ game I've ever fully played, so I wouldn't mind a bit of that right now.
@rjejr I've seen multiple hardcore Dragon Quest fans say this has pretty much the best story of any game in the series. A bold claim but entirely possible — Square Enix seems to have really poured a lot of effort into the narrative this time around, based on what I've read.
I need it. I need it in my veins.
Awesome. Now bring the game to psn as a ps2 classic please Square
@ShogunRok Thanks. SquareEnix seems to have all their story people still working on DQ and all their graphics people still working on FF. Not that the DQ graphics are bad, but Toriyama's designs still look the same since DB in the 80s. If DQ were on Switch instead of PS4 everyone would be making fun of it and telling fans to buy real hardware.
Guess I'll go ahead and pre-order it before Amazon drops the Prime discount here too.
WOW!!! that looks amazing. Day 1 for me.
I never really liked that getup. It made the hero of VIII look like he was donning a bad fancy dress pirate outfit.
Love the classic DQVIII music, though.
Cool...but how about jessica's outfit for jade instead? 😏
Nice bonus, I already preordered the game so any other game it's gonna be a Black Friday deal since this one looks like it's going to keep me busy for a long time
Wonder why DQ IX AND X didn't release in the west? Were they good?
Nostalgia central for me, though I should go back one day and actually beat DQ8e, stopped halfway thru...
@ellsworth004 Dragon Quest 9 did release in the U.S. though...

@ShogunRok Finished up NNK2 tonight, spoilers follow. Chapter 9 - the last one - was good. Could have done without the skirmish but once I figured out to avoid the one-hit death beam I was ok. Was at level 52 when I started, finished at 56, barely made that last battle, used up all but a few resurrection health items. Took about 40 minutes and had I died I may have just broke the disc in half and called it a night. Instead it's now tightly sealed in a box ready for Amazon for $26 credit I can put towards DQXI which I pre-orered a couple of days ago.
You were right about the ending, no weird last boss out of nowhere like the first game. The curious boy makes no sense, and was completely unnecessary, and Roland's world makes no sense, but until that denouement it was good, and all the voice acting at the end was a nice touch after so much silence. I never got past 20 with the skirmishes, and level 4 in my kingdom was never happening needing 100 citizens, I'll leave that to the die-hards, but overall the game was just good enough I don't really need DQXI in 3 weeks, but I've kind of already talked myself into it at this point.
Thanks for all the feedback on the JRPG games. I'd ask sammy, but you know.
@rjejr Glad you enjoyed it. I've got high hopes that DQXI will be a cut above, too, so getting money off that's not a bad deal.
