Not to be a Debbie downer, but critics aren’t exactly ecstatic about We Happy Few. Compulsion Games’ curious survival roguelike has been a long-time in the making, but now it’s finally ready for release this week – and it doesn’t look like reviewers have been taking their happy pills. While the scores are certainly not a disaster, they’re not as overly optimistic as you may have hoped. We’ll bring you our verdict soon, but in the meantime, here’s what the rest of the web is saying.
Shacknews - 8/10
The game deftly balances exploration, crafting, combat, and puzzle-solving as you move through the game in the direction of the next story-based waypoint. It moves at an appropriate pace, and there's always something new around the corner, with plenty to discover as the world feels as though it's slowly unraveling around you.
Game Revolution - 6/10
For $60 I needed to see more quality, and instead became overloaded with quantity. Despite the game’s shortcomings, I am excited for the season pass, which promises to explore more characters and take a deeper dive into the world. Hopefully we’ll also be treated to a smattering of patches to add more polish to the experience. In its launch state, however, We Happy Few pleases the eyes and ears, but much like the fictional drug it features, the Joy is great until it wears off.
Destructoid - 5/10
We Happy Few is unique. It features gorgeous environments, great music, twisted humor, and a magnetic story. It deserves praise for those aesthetics. But the game is what matters, and it is lackluster in that regard, with bad combat, mundane stealth, and endless, frivolous mechanics. By choosing the fastidious "micro-management" path, We Happy Few distracts far too much from its true potential as a dystopian gaming classic. And that's the biggest downer of all.
Eurogamer.net - No Score
After disliking We Happy Few in Early Access I was half-expecting to loathe it at launch, and there is a lot that I loathe about it: the lumpy brawling, the showers of trinkets that usually amount to nothing, the branching scenarios that only make you yearn for Dishonored's vertical mazes and chaining abilities. But for everything I dislike, there is an element of the universe and writing that grabs me by the ears.
Will you be taking a chance on We Happy Few, or spending your time on more positive plights? Smile like you mean it in the comments section below.

I will try this game someday, but not now.
It's too expensive. I like the art style and it makes me want to try the game (even though it sounds a bit rubbish) but they're charging £50 for this. No chance.
Looks like they should have released as a PS Plus game.
The Games Revolution reviewer says they are "excited for the season pass." Personally if a game NEEDS a season pass to make people excited that signals that the main game is lacking Something.
no surprises here, another Indie developer trying to stamp a AAA price on their game. Contrast was one of the 1st PS Plus games out for the PS4 i remember enjoying that game.
Looks like the PS family isn't losing too much with Compulsion Games going to Xbox.
The price tag is crazy. £55 standard, £70 deluxe.
Well, it is called We Happy Few. Seems appropriate.
It was not on my radar and seems a bit like the 'No Mans Sky' effect - an 'indie' game that's at a AAA price point and being critiqued on what expectations we have for a AAA game. Had this been at an 'indie' price-point, I am sure the scores would be more forgiving.
I was never going to buy, even at the indie price point before they decided to bump it up and 'add more' to the game. At full price though, it really doesn't seem like a game that can compete with others in that price range - you really must want it with nothing else on your 'radar' to spend £50+ on this. Considering the games that are due out in the next few months - Spider-Man, Tomb Raider, AC: Odyssey, and of course RDR2 for similar money. This looks like an indie/budget game, rather than a massive, big budget development...
A little disappointing. I pre-ordered the game and it's currently on it's way. I at least hope thst it turns out to be "good" (not great), because the premise looked promising.
Plus, nothing can be as bad as Agony. Right?
I am absolute bamboozled at the price tag for this game. I mean, I'm not averse to throwing money around willy nilly. Sometimes the morning after a night on the gin I'll go to the shop and spend £20 on crisps and I'm not even upset about it. But £50+ seems pretty hefty for this game. I figured it was a <£20 release.
Nice! Like I said two weeks ago I was interested in this but now seeing the scores and the livestream they did this week, I don't think it's good enough for 60euros, the only great thing is the art style and the interesting setting
This is one of those games that looks really interesting. It's a shame about the average scores but I'd have only picked this up when its price dropped to around £20 anyway. Hopefully some updates will fix the gameplay issues and it will be a nice game to try out in the future at more reasonable price.
@johncalmc it was originally a low price release, but after the reveal and the attention the game got they completely changed to a bigger narrative and a went for the normal triple A release price
This is such a confusing game when first announced by microsoft it looked really interesting with its art style and themes then when I saw gameplay from the beta it was a survival game which I had no interest in. I have heard it has changed since the beta but I have no idea what it has changed to. Price is very off putting stops the impulse buy purchases.
If these reviews are accurate, it feels to me like they have tried to justify the AAA price by lobbing pointless content around a well written world and story. It is a shame as I was looking forward to this game, the world seemed quite unique and I always want to see new studios do good but not at £50.
Do i sense some salt in these comments. I plan on buying this for Xbox 1 reviews be damned
This is a $20 dollar game right here. I won't spend a penny more; that price is ridiculous for what this game is.
@ShadowWarrior Yeah, yeah, cool story bro.
Boggles my mind how people can justify spending more than £40 for a new release (special editions aside) I can currently find this for £39.
Was hoping for some bioshock vibes however..wont pick this up until it's at least £20
@daveofduncan
Trophy just for u https://psnprofiles.com/trophy/8011-we-happy-few/5-shocking-biology
The basic setting of the game where people are taking their happy pills until society deteriorates and dies is interesting, so it's a shame if the final game ends up being a bit mediocre.
I mean lets be real. This game was never gonna be this expensive until Gearbox got involved.
The last time I listened to critics, I didn't play Remember Me for 5 effing years until I picked it up from Steam on sale...
Besides, it's Play Anywhere on XB1...
So, I'll be playing it for free (thanks to my friend, who pre-ordered it) on my PC
Not surprised, I played it on Xbox via the early access trial a while back and while I did like the concept, the gameplay itself got old for me really fast, which is a shame is it has a nice Bioshock feel to it when you first start playing.
Unless it's broken I'll likely still buy this
Not a shocker based on the early access versions.
Hope you kept the receipt Microsoft
Ah i'll wait for a price drop, sorry we happy few a little too rich for my blood at the mo
Meh, I was always going to wait for this game to hit bargain bin pricing anyways...
With Gearbox in the mix, what did you expect?
We Happy Few — the name says it all.
Was going to buy it but now I’m not sure.
I have only put 4 or so hours into it but l,m enjoying it so far. It’s an interesting world and story so far. Main characters are likeable and different. Definitely get the Bioshock vibe from it but l must say they priced it too expensive. I got it on PSN as it doesn’t release on disc in Australia until the 17 th.
Can anyone tell me why Eurogamer.net exists because every time I read a review to any game and they are listed most of the time it's always no score. Any way I wonder if Jim Sterling is still in this as he lent his voice to this game I believe but I think he had a falling out with the Devs and they removed him.
I need to watch some game play for this game. If i like what i see i will then wait for a big price drop. I already have a few games in backlog to play.
