Media Create has expanded upon this week’s Japanese sales charts, revealing that Marvel’s Spider-Man has actually been selling out. The game sold through over 96 per cent of its original retail shipment in the region, forcing fans to turn to the PlayStation Store to snag digital copies of the superhero exclusive.
For those of you who don’t know, the title sold over 125k units in its first week, making it the strongest launch for a Spidey title in the region. The release received the same accolade in the UK, so now we’re just waiting for Sony to reveal the global picture for the open world outing. Is anyone expecting anything other than enormous success?

Wow.... it's an awesome game
To be fair, it’s not like Japan’s been giving Sony much reason to believe in their spending power as of late.
If they only shipped 125K and have 7M consoles sales they were looking for an attach rate of only 1 in 56. That not great expectations by any count
@BarFooToo They most certainly were if you consider the attach rate most ps4 games (even exclusives) have.
@naruball I'm sure that God of War will be closing in on 1in14 at this point if not well past already. I think it shows some nerves in their home market. If so it will keep pushing Sony which is a win for all gamers
@BarFooToo I don't think I've seen a game surpass a million in the first week in Japan alone. I could be wrong though.
@BarFooToo It really doesn’t work like that.
I'm not even sure if Spiderman is popular in Japan... Personally, I'm not a superhero or comic book fan and I bought Spiderman day 1, and to quote Cosmo Kramer himself, "I'm loving every minute of it!!!"
@BarFooToo Western games dont typically sell well in Japan from what I understand, which is why it's a good rate, and why sales expectations and stock were lowas you mentioned. It is def a low rate for a game like this in US/UK.. at least a low final rate but not sure about only 10 days in.. but it's no small feat to have the game appeal to this many Japanese gamers.
@Enuo
Games are usually overpriced here compared to other regions. Until recently there hadn’t been any noteworthy discounts / sales campaigns in the Japanese PSN Store either (I.e. the best discounts would just take the price down to current US prices etc.) There is a little more effort nowadays to convince players to spend more, but for now the PS4, and especially its games don’t deserve big sales in Japan. IMO
Fantastic game. Got my platinum for it yesterday.
@blourf WOW where how do you make up this nonsense? Playstation has complete games, no to minimal microtransactions, high productionvalue. Yeah i think some people think its a free and that they are special snowflakes. And that they deserve everything for a small price you want them to go the Activision Blizzard way? Make the game cheaper and add in a mobile phone free to play economy. 🤢🤮
That's great to hear, Japan should definitely buy more great games like that, including Japanese games.
This may be my first platinum trophy in a long time and that is saying a lot cause not a lot of games grab my attention enough (or are just too damn long). Side quests add just enough variety and I think the web swinging makes moving from one collectible to another feel fun.
It's a fantastic game. Finally upgraded from my two PS3's this weekend and bought a bundle with the Spidey - game fully thinking I'd sell it straight away. WRONG! Best game I've played in years and the PS4 is fabulous too
@Flaming_Kaiser
Unlike you I have been living in Japan for over 15 years and know for a fact that players here have to pay higher prices for both Western games and Japanese games in most cases. So get of your high horse and look at the facts. Even though I can afford paying full prices for games, I still find it unfair that gamers in the West, especially in the US can enjoy a lot more and better deals on games than Japanese consumers. Making gamers here pay $80 for games that are “fully priced” at $60 in the US, even if there isn’t a mark up for Japanese translation cost, shows the stance of Sony and all other publishers you’re trying to defend. I’m not asking for free games, I expect equal treatment. Add that to your SJW juice.
@PS_Nation they do just not what yer expecting
More like a shooter w Squid Kids...
