The Game Awards may still be a few weeks away, but that's not the only award show in town, with the 2018 Golden Joystick Awards taking place this evening. It was a big night for PlayStation, with the likes of God of War scooping up multiple prizes and Detroit: Become Human getting some recognition for its character performances.
God of War won first place in the following categories: Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, Best Audio, and PlayStation Game of the Year, while the developer itself, Sony Santa Monica, won the award of Studio of the Year. Elsewhere, Bryan Dechart won the Best Performer trophy for his portrayal of Connor in Detroit: Become Human, Dead Cells was crowned the Best Indie Game of the year, while Monster Hunter: World took home the prize for Best Co-Operative Game. Most surprisingly, however, Fortnite won the prestigious Ultimate Game of the Year Award.

Congrats to God of War well deserved we all know it's the GOTY and also glad that Monster Hunter World won something too
It's crazy that this game only just came out this year, is winning or at least nominated for awards all over the place, and it's on sale on PSN for only $21.99, for everyone, not just PS+. And there's no paid DLC or season pass.
And the BF sales for it on disc will be about $25 everywhere.
Try to find a comparable deal on a big game on Switch, even 18 month old games.
Fortnite as GOTY? I’m done with this world.
This is so wrong. First, the game was released last year. And second, well, it’s frickin Fortnite.
@PS_Nation It'll be a popularity contest, nothing more. The real awards are this site's forum and staff picks
@AdamNovice Evil Robert will sabotage the system again!
@PS_Nation Evil Robert doesn't have Persona 5 this year
It suck, I'm already bored of fortnite
Bryan Dechart was great as Connor.
God of awards word up son
Fortnite GOTY? The world really is getting dumber. Astrobot is a far better VR game than Skyrim IMO.
Really happy to see Bryan getting recognition for his work in Detroit. Connor was a great character, and it's great to see how much Bryan enjoyed the role and is still promoting the game today via social media and streaming. Seems a really nice guy
Very happy to see this game get praise, even if the awards ceremony is itself a joke (Fortnite GOTY, go home you're drunk)
Skyrim as best PSVR game and Fortnite as game of the year?A lot of misprints in this article!
Congrats to God Of War though,it's a beast of a game and deserves nothing less.
Don't agree with any of the winners apart from Bryan Dechart.
Fortnite winning game of the year though ... shows you that multiplayer is valued much more with the gaming media than single-player gaming.
A multiplayer game winning Game of the Year is - to me - like a slot-machine winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. It's a joke.
I can understand a truly unique multiplayer game being nominated for Game of the Year, like Rocket League which offered something new and original, but Fortnite does the exact same thing 10+ other games do; it just happened to become more trendy by chance.
Well deserved awards for God of War, that game is utterly amazing from start to finish and is one of the very best games of any generation.
The winner of the "ultimate" game of the year shows you why 7 year olds shouldn't be allowed to vote and how in the UK, we got into this mess with Brexit in the first place 😜
Very well deserved! My GOTY without a doubt.
I'm due a second full playthrough very shortly
Word up Miyazaki san!
Imagine giving Fortnite your GOTY award, when a dozen of infinitely better games released in the same year
Should GOW not have won since it won the most prizes? like GOTY should be awarded to the game with the most total awards.
fortnite can ....off.
this is just like oscars, but instead of politics being the winning factor it's either popularity or bad taste. In this case both.
@playstation1995 I literally just signed up to say that, I was going to say that...
@J2theEzzo 😄 haha.word up son
"Ultimate Game of the Year - Fortnite Battle Royale"
Hahahaha. Sure, JS awards. Sure.
@rjejr One of the many reasons I prefer Sony. Ninty fans used to claim that Ninty games don't get price drops because they keep selling, unlike Sony games which are front loaded. Even if that was true during the wii/ps3 generation, it's definitely no longer the case.
@naruball Fortnite being “Ultimate Game Of The Year” doesn’t mean it’s rhe “best” game of the year. It means it’s rhe biggest. And that it has been...
@AhmadSumadi Then it makes no sense for it to be a category. It's as if the oscars introduced a "most popular" category. It's supposed to reward excellence, not commercial success.
@naruball supposed to yes. But most awards like these are based off commercial success. Many of the best games aren’t commercially successful. The two usually go hand in hand as it pertains to awards and recognition.
@jdv95 yes that would make sense. Fortnite didn't win in any other category and wouldn't deserve so either. So how can it be the best game anywhere right now. Make no frigging sense. GoW should have taken the game off the year. Not giving it to GoW is like FIFA not giving Ronaldo or Messi footballer of the year after they scored 100 goals in a season respectively.
Fortnite sucks and only popular amongst kids and Lane brains
@naruball Well the Ninty games do keep selling, b/c Zelda came out at launch in 2017 and the "Ninty Game of the Year" award went to Octopath Traveler by Squenix. That's why Zelda is still selling, Ninty hasn't released a game since Mario. I mean what are people going to buy Zelda, 1 2 Switch or Super Mario Party?
But I still think those games would sell better w/ a price drop. Maybe even the console too. Should be interesting this holiday, $199 PS4 and Spidey vs $399 Switch and Pokemon or $359 Switch and SSBU. Not expecting MS to stat announcing Xbox 1 sales numbers anytime soon.
@rjejr some Ninty games do keep selling, you' re right. Plenty of other ones, though, don't, yet their price hardly ever drops. God of War is selling better than Zelda yet it's been discounted several times.
Not very smart in my opinion. Sure, the Zelda fans will buy it, but those on the fence are less likely to, even if they have fewer games to choose from. Sony makes sure that through the lower price, it can help the franchise grow by making more gamers fans of the franchise.
Fortnite was not game of the year God Of War deserved that as well
God of War is well deserved!
Was spider-man released too late for these awards then?
