Sony’s slowly rolling out an updated version of its PlayStation VR headset – but what’s the difference between PSVR CUH-ZVR1 and PSVR CUH-ZVR2? In this article we’re going to explain how the two models compare, how you can determine which unit you’re getting, and which version of the virtual reality accessory you should buy.

PSVR CUH-ZVR1 vs CUH-ZVR2: What Are the Differences?
PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR2 is the updated version of the headset, while PSVR CUH-ZVR1 is the launch model. PSVR CUH-ZVR2 makes a few minor changes to the original headset, streamlining its cabling and integrating its stereo headphones into the headset itself. The biggest change, though, is to the Processor Unit, which allows HDR passthrough when playing on a compatible 4K television. This is one of the biggest oversights of the original PSVR, as you needed to swap out cables in order to take advantage of HDR.
PSVR CUH-ZVR1 vs CUH-ZVR2: How Can You Distinguish Between the Models?
To find out whether you’re buying a CUH-ZVR1 or CUH-ZVR2 PlayStation VR headset, simply look for the product code on the packaging. At the time of typing, bundles for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and DOOM VFR include the updated model in the United States, but things vary around the world. If you can’t find the product code, then look at the image of the headset on the boxart itself – the CUH-ZVR2 model will show the headphones integrated into the headset.
PSVR CUH-ZVR1 vs CUH-ZVR2: Which Model Should You Buy?
There’s a good chance that Sony will discount the PSVR CUH-ZVR1 model in order to clear stock, so if you’re not worried about the HDR oversight and you can get a good price, you may as well go for the launch model – the specifications, screen, and all other features are identical after all. If you happen to own a 4K television and use HDR, though, you’re going to want to plump up for PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR2, as the added convenience should really improve your experience.

I was thinking about upgrading to the newer model as I'm sick of wire swapping because of the HDR pass through problem.
Just one question. Can we still use any headphones if the new model has them integrated in to the actual headset?
@SoulChimera Yes, there's a port on the back I believe.
I didn't know the new model had earphones built into it. Assuming they're of decent enough standard, that's a nice little bonus.
@roe They're not built in, they just connect to the auxiliary port via the HMD instead of on the dangling cable.
@roe Since they're Sony earbuds, I'll assume they're at the very least decent-sounding. It would be a shame if this was the one area where Sony cheaped out on their 'immersive' VR headset.
@get2sammyb Excellent, thanks!
@ZurapiiYohane
Im a bit jelly there I hammered the game first time, love to play it first in VR, especially after how good resi 7 was.
@drd7of14 Ah right I see. Cheers for the info
@MadAussieBloke
Can you post a link to the switcher you bought
thanks for the info one of these is next on my shopping list.
@MadAussieBloke excuse my ignorance but do you think this would do the same job?

@MadAussieBloke thanks a lot, i got one today and initially it wasn't working for me. I had to turn the video resolution to my specific resolution because automatic was just giving me a blank screen.
@MadAussieBloke i really didn't think this through i kinda need one with more ports..
@MadAussieBloke yep those are my settings now .. Just wouldn't work if I had resolution on automatic
@SoulChimera I have used both original and more recently the new one.
In the original (CUH-ZVR1) the headphone would be connected via this control module built into the wire (that connects PSVR to processing unit) where you have the Power On/Off as well as Volume Up/Down and Mute On/Off.
In the new one (CUH-ZVR2) the Power On/Off as well as the Volume Up/Down and Mute On/Off controls are built right into the actual PSVR headset and the headphone also connects directly into the PSVR headset (in the back). You still have a wire going from PSVR headset to the processing unit, but it is now thinner and easier to manage in both storing away PSVR and also while using it.
It is actually a much improved design and the earphones it comes with are perfectly sized to plug into the back of it and reach your earns and not have wires getting tangled up in front of you as you play.
I've hooked up my psvr exactly how shown in the video but no video appears on the psvr input (2) when I switch to the second input on the splitter. Plus the video cuts in and out while just on port 1 so I'm guessing either the be cables out the switch are bad. Any input?
When are Sony putting toggles on there move controllers all this teleportation and pressing buttons to turn around and also even moving forward its annoying specially for Doom and Skyrim but other than that its a fantastic machine
@get2sammyb I was just looking over info on HDR - my current surround sound system doesn't have HDR pass-thru - and remembered my PSVR box doesn't have pass-thru either.
So I was all excited about HDR in that previous comment to you, and now I'm struggling figuring out how to get HDR from my PS4 Slim to my tv. So. Much. Incompatible. Technology. ugh
Think I'll wire the PSVR breakout box HDMI cable to the sound system, where it is now, and the PS4 cable to the tv, so I can get HDR, and leave a spare cable laying around to hook up the PSVR box and PS4 when need be. Which isn't very often, though I do want to play Far point and finish Astrobot. I've been sick on and off since October 2019, haven't wanted to put that headset on. What a drag it is getting old.
