Yesterday, Kotaku reported that EA Vancouver's open world Star Wars title had been cancelled by the infamous publisher. Three sources claimed this to be true, and the project, codenamed Orca, has apparently been shelved in favour of something on a smaller scale.
In response to these reports, EA has sent out a statement to some outlets regarding the matter. Here it is in full:
There’s been speculation overnight about one of our Star Wars projects. As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future Star Wars content and games. We’re fully committed to making more Star Wars games, we’re very excited about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn, and we’ll share more about our new projects when the time is right.
The publisher neither confirms or denies that the open world Star Wars game has indeed been cancelled, and instead has plainly talked around it. EA Vancouver will continue to work with the licence, it seems, but quite what they'll be working on now is anyone's guess. Perhaps we'll see a more linear Star Wars adventure after all? I'm sure it'll show up as a mobile game at some point.
fixed it for you
EA: 'We're Fully Committed to Making More Star Wars Games. Just not good ones.'
Well that's a relief
@Dubya75 EA: "We're fully committed to ruining the Star Wars franchise."
I got it.
The 'news' was that the Orca project is now a Tuna project. Good to know.
Can someone just remake Dark Forces and X-Wing vs TieFighter again... cheers
Will Disney just step in and take the licence away from these clowns just about anyone else could do more with it
ea we fully committed to cancel star wars 1313.word up son
Oh, I'm sure that statement will really settle investor's minds. Basically just confirmed the article's contents!
When people write "committed to" it's usually because they can't or won't say "will" or "going to". I do it fairly often in my job. It sounds convincing, but leaves a ton of wiggle room.
"We're as fully committed to making more Star Wars games as we are our unprecedented relationship to Nintendo and the Wii U. All future SW games will be Wii U exclusives."
Imbeciles. Bigger omnishambles than the UK Gov.
It's annoying that they cancelled it because of a "change in the market". Meaning they probably saw how much games like fortnite are making and decided we can't really load a single player game with microtransactions so screw it. They even said that they want to make games "that people will keep coming back to". What are the chances they are going to make a game focused on a single player campaign without a money making multiplayer mode now? It's unlikely to happen...
When is that 10 years up?
Although with the current direction the Star Wars franchise is headed, it might not make any difference anyway.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Whoa let's not get crazy
And no one started celebrating.
And they are all be MP focused and filled with micro-transactions.
EA using there jedi mind tricks again. "These aren't the games your looking for"
Bring SW:TOR to PS4 please, thank you.
So by "evolve into future star wars" they mean it is canceled and the assets are being re-purposed to be another kind of star wars game and "ignore that whole cancel thing, look we still have jedi fallen order from respawn guys"
Why did Star Wars have to end up in the hands of Disney and EA?
Me personally, Rogue One has been the only good thing to come out of all this. And somewhat Rebels.
I'd love CDPR to have the licence and for them to make games inspired by the Thrawn trilogy books.
So.. we need to fire the uncharted creator because it’s making a single player experience...
Crap, it doesn’t work as a MP experience...
Damage control!! Damage control!!
We are working SO HARD. But we cannot tell you anything...
EA is a joke.
What ever it is I’m sure the critics will award it 8/10 and the public will give it the real score of 5/10.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi "We're very clear about our clear belief in Star Wars' clear importance to our clear business model."
EA: 'We're Fully Committed to Making More Star Wars Games'
Disney: 'Let's step outside'
Ea should order bioware to make star wars rpg, like knight of the old republics
And I'm fully commited to not giving EA any more money.
Insert any laughing gif here
I’ll believe it when I see the goods. And the goods have to be good.
EA "Were fully committed to making star wars games (that we can sneak in MTs and LBs) just as we didn't sneak in that sentence just then.
Something to look forward to right? Good ol EA.
I played the BattleFront 2 title (only SP & a little Arcade) and thought it was pretty decent. Have I gone to the Dark Side?
So Amy Hennigs single player game got cancelled for a open world game that also got cancelled just so they can make a smaller scale game.
You cant make this stuff up.
They moved production to mobile. Calling it now.
We are fully committed to making more Star Wars games. We are altering the deal.
Do you feel you are being treated unfairly?
EA can kiss my Outer Rim.
