Was there an appetite for a Dragon Quest Builders sequel? Square Enix clearly thinks so, as it’s pulled out its wooden hammer and pegged a 12th July release date to Dragon Quest Builders 2 on the PlayStation 4. According to Square Enix, the game “packs in even more content and unlimited building combinations in an all-new original story with new characters, world and gameplay to satisfy long-time fans and newcomers alike”.
Of course the biggest change is the addition of four-player online co-op. This will allow “up to four friends to play together and create something truly magnificent”. Other additions include farming features, a first-person mode, and the ability to construct much larger buildings with far more variety than ever before.

I think the biggest change, at least in Japan, is that it releases the same day on the Switch, which I believe has a similar install base there to the PS4, so it will be interesting to see which version sells better.
If it has 1 story that doesn't require you to start from scratch 3 times, I might be in.
Who is publishing this version exactly?
@Knuckles-Fajita The box in the upper right says Squenix. Do you think it's not them for some reason?
I barely pay attention to who makes games, publishing is way beyond my ability to care so I have no idea.
I enjoyed the first game, so I'll get this.
I LOVE the first one. I hope this doesn't suffer from the sophomore slump.
The first one was really fun so I'm looking forward to this
@rjejr My money would be on the switch version selling more. The ability to take the first game on the move made me pick up the vita version over ps4
@rjejr Id say so given its Nintendo publishing the other version
I loved the first one cant wait to play this on the PS4.
Comes out close to Fire Emblem: Three Houses so I'll be skipping it, at least at launch. And then a few months later, there's DQXI:S and possibly DLC for the PS4 DQXI, so it might not get a look in for a while, with me or general RPG fans.
I may buy it at some point, but only if there's an option to turn off the background music this time. That severely shortened my enjoyment of the first game.
@rjejr I loved the first one but yes having to start again a few times throughout the story was very annoying.
@FinneasGH "very annoying"
I was so annoyed just reading the reviews that I didn't even play it. The fact that after all this time of not having ever played it but I still remember that shows just how annoyed I was. Will be looking at reviews of the new one, ti does look like a good game to play w/ my wife. But she's more easily annoyed than I am.
@rjejr DQB2 has been out for nearly a month at this point, there's not much to wonder about.

You can see the two versions are selling roughly the same amount.
@rjejr "I was so annoyed just reading the reviews that I didn't even play it."
That seems really dumb but OK.
@misterMike Switch has local and online coop. PS4 is online coop only.
@Happyposter Thanks for the Japanese sales link. They are really close, matching up almost perfectly w/ the hardware install bases.
As for this: "reading the reviews that I didn't even play it."
That seems really dumb but OK."
um, don't people read reviews to help them decide what games to play? What else are reviews for? Wouldn't it be dumber if I read reviews that all said the same thing - game has an annoying game mechanic - then I played it anyway knowing I wasn't going to like it?
To me, playing a game that I read all those reviews for and knew I wouldn't like it would be dumb.
@misterMike There's no splitscreen, no. Network only, so two or more systems are needed. I have a feeling the Switch wouldn't be able to handle splitscreen anyway, DQB2 can be pretty resource intensive.
@rjejr Fair enough I suppose that's what reviews are for. I don't trust the opinions of others enough to let them decide for me whether or not to try something, I'd rather regret afterwards than never experiencing something.
@Happyposter "I'd rather regret afterwards"
I regret enough stuff afterwards that I think I'm going to to like to spend any more time or money on stuff I think I'm not going to like even before I start playing it.
I do know what you mean though, I have very odd tastes - Jak and Daxter is my favorite game, I hated SM64, Starfox Adventures is in my top 5 - so I don't listen to reviewers subjective opinions on the games, but I do listen to facts, things like random encounters, no save points, 1 hit kills, first person view - there's just a whole lot of stuff I don't like and very little I do. Whether somebody else likes a game or not doesn't matter to me, I just read the reviews for the facts. Random encounters in JRPG should have gone away a decade ago. And I don't like replaying things. Ever play "The Bouncer" on PS2? It's a 20 minute long game you play 3x, once as each character. The entire game lasts an hour. Wish I would have read reviews about that before buying it.
I did read a lot of good magazine reviews about "Vagrant Story" on PS1, hated that game. I think that's the game that made me realize reviewers and I don't see things eye-to-eye.
