Cyberpunk 2077 is launching in April next year as a purely single-player experience. Developer CD Projekt Red has made that clear on multiple occasions, but at the same time, it certainly hasn't shied away from the fact that multiplayer components are being explored and developed behind the scenes.
However, speaking to Eurogamer, senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers says that despite ongoing development, multiplayer may never actually make it into the game. "We're not saying no multiplayer, but it doesn't mean we're saying yes either. It's still an R&D phase," explains Jonkers.
"Immersion is super important for us and we have to make sure everything fits together. The single-player experience, it all fits together. We're not just going to slap some [multiplayer] feature in and that'll be it. It's possible if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit," Jonkers continues.
It's not often that you get studios talking so openly about what's being worked on behind closed doors, but CD Projekt Red is clearly quite happy to let everyone know that Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer may still be on the cards at some point. Again, though, we'll have to wait and see whether anything actually comes of it.

Not really fussed. Would prefer that they took the resources and applied them to the main game.
Na, I just want to play as a solo solo. Well, with my good bud Jackie in tow.
Before you all comment on how amaaazzzingg CDPR are, go watch the Control trailer. Jeez.
I’m in the minority here probably, but I actually had a lot of fun with all the tacked on multiplayer modes back in the early 2010’s. Dead Space 2’s for example was a ton of fun. Or RE Mercenaries etc. All the stuff out today is kinda bland and the same I feel. I love a crazy unbalanced, no micro transaction mess of an experience lol. It’s more fun than all the ‘competitive scene’ prospects of games today.
Granted I didn’t like when the SP lacked for it, but hey Uncharted and TLOU tacked it on with great success in SP.
@Stragen8 it was a fun time in retrospect to be honest, all the weird tacked on MP modes. It was obviously part of gamings evolution (as loot boxes are right now), I didn’t really play any of them but I kind of wish I’d got involved in hindsight.
@Stragen8 My friend and I played so many tacked on MPs. We really didn't care if they weren't perfect, it was just fun to mess around lol.
I love the fact cdpr won't put mp in when it's an obvious cash cow with Loot boxes, cosmetics etc. If the game works it works... Screw the easy money.
If only other Devs took that same stance.
@Deadlyblack exactly!!
I'm not fussed about multiplayer, but could be a fun option for those that want it.
I just don’t see how MP would have a place in a game like this, could you imagine The Witcher 3 having MP? No me neither. CDPR just pour your heart and soul in making Cyberpunk 2077 as one of the best solo gaming experience as you can.
@Deadlyblack @Stragen8 Always thought Mass Effect 3 had the best tacked on multiplayer ever. Except it wasn't really tacked on, it was pretty fleshed out — but you know what I mean. I must have spent hundreds of hours playing that with friends!
Pure solo is good, if not better for me. If there is a multiplayer, I hope it won't have exclusive content, so solo players won't miss anything like some stupid multiplayer missions in AC Unity.
