Square Enix has revealed the Western box art for Final Fantasy VII Remake, and it's rather good looking. Perhaps as you'd expect, it features Cloud, buster sword on back, staring up at Shinra's headquarters.
Those of you with a sharp memory have probably already realised that it's a remake of the original Final Fantasy VII PlayStation cover that was used in North America.
And yes, 'Final Fantasy VII Remake' does seem to be the game's finalised title. Over the last few months, there's been speculation about whether it would actually be called something like 'Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part 1', or even 'Final Fantasy VII: Midgar', given that the story is going to be told across multiple instalments. But here we are with the official box art, and it's still just Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Anyway, what do you think? Twirl your buster sword with ease in the comments section below.

i would have preferred the old UK style of a plain while with logo but this one is damn nice
Ah yeah I think I still have the old plain white FF7 case.
This is pretty awesome though. I can't wait. The name is definitely misleading mind. If I didn't know already I'd think it was the whole game.
Oh my god, it's so nostalgic! Brilliant move.
Looks super good.
On a side note, I'm hoping to finally finish the original FF7 tonight. Exciting.
@FullbringIchigo it could still be a reversable cover.
Lets hope.
THIS. IS. PERFECT! 😍
So....consumers gonna be miffed when SquareEnix turns around with FFVII Remake (But its the rest of it) Edition later since this says....nothing about it being episodic. The game is just gonna end at the end of Midgar and like....thats it? Thats what this name implies.
And that wont go well.
This game is turning out to look so so good I cannot wait
Pegi 16...is that the same as Mature in the states? 7 had some very mature themes. And one in particular scene that was void of blood that would have made the OG release Mature imo. If so thats great news. 7 always had that very dark dark comedy vibe to it
AH IT LOOKS EXACTLY HOW I DREAMED IT WOULD! I can't believe this is finally happening.
I love it, it looks great. But it's also misleading, it should say its also episodic and not the full remake.
It's weird that it doesn't say "part 1" or something like that. Imagine buying this game thinking you're buying a full remake of the game.
@Nyne11Tyme nope, M would equal to 18 in Europe
Yes the cover art is good, it’s even better than the steelcase version
@Octane I don’t know if it’s heart warming or just worrying that by now we can see from miles away what is going to be the next flavor of the week/month gaming controversy 🙌🏻
I mean, I’ll be surprised if there is no backlash around this game being part 1 but not telling.
Oh look at that the original had the entire game included. "3 discs", back when third party gave you your money's worth.
Yeah but they didn't put a 'Part 1' anywhere in the cover so Jason Schreier says we need to get butthurt about it.
So if the first game is just called Final Fantasy Remake..what are the second and third episodes going to be called when they are released in 2028?
Looks great but really dissapointing that summoning materia is used as a preorder bonus.... 😩
@Octane But according to them it isn't "part 1", it's a "full game".
Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame didn't have part numbers but they don't really work alone. Neither did Star Wars when it released, now number 4, or really number 5 if you count Rogue One, which people should, it's epic, and the first half of Star Wars, and FFX didn't have a 1 before FFX-2, and FFXIII didn't have a 1 either, and I don't think part 2 had a part 2 either, part 3 may have been part 3 though.
So I think they're wrong, but precedents abound.
God of War was worse for not having a "Part 1" in the title, it obviously was with that dream ending. Come to think of it neither did the original God of War. Or DmC.
This still should have, but they have plenty of "But what about game/film" to point at. And really, people should know with this one. Though anybody picking it up on a whim b/c of the cover should try to return it then sue when the store wont' take it back.
Next one probably doesn't have a name yet since they don't know how many there will be. If it's only two games they could call the next one "FF7R: The Rest of It". 🤣 More likely 3 games, the 3rd of which never releases, and the call the next one "FF7R: Enter Sephiroth" or some such.
But I'm still expecting the PS5 4K version to be called "FF7 Remake Remastered". Though "FF7 Remake Remade" has a nice ring to it too.
Gaming is weird.
@Nyne11Tyme @clvr I think it can work both ways. I’m sure I’ve seen M rated games be both 16 and 18 in Europe, depending on the game (I don’t have any examples to hand). I’d be surprised if this was M rated though.
While I'm looking forward to this, I can honestly wait for the inevitable Complete edition. I rather not think that I have to wait for the rest of it.
They don’t need to put Part 1, Part 2 etc.
It’s a remake, people should rightly expect it to be drastically different. I mean, in this remake they could wrap up the entire story in Midgar if they want. President Shinra pulls a gun on Sephiroth (Or Jenova, if you like) in the tower, boom, game over.
Stop thinking like basic idiots, everyone. You actually make me physically sick. If you want to play FF7, go play FF7.
(That said, I’m not overly keen on the box art, but whatever.)
@KratosMD exactly. I’m not even close to as annoyed as my last post made me sound, but I’m bored of people moaning about the same points. And each time they show it, the game looks better and better. So have a little faith, people.
When I first saw that artwork, I knew it needed to be the boxart.
@FullbringIchigo Not just the UK, that was the actual cover everywhere in the world apart from America. They don't do it as much anymore but they'd always change the cover for games for America, and it'd always be worse. Who can forget things like the ICO monstrosity or the hilarious Mega Man ones.
@Flaming_Kaiser Yeah, but summons that weren't in the original game. I'd agree if they'd removed Knights of the Round or whatever just for a pre-order bonus.
@Wazeddie22 Final Fantasy VII Remake II
@Flaming_Kaiser
I’d guess Square will sell it as well separately sometime after launch. As sure as my bottom points downward, people will pay for materia if they like the game.
@Orpheus79V I like the sound of that!
@kyleforrester87 I'm not annoyed it's only the first part. I just think it's weird it doesn't say that on the box.
I mean, someone sees this in a store and thinks he's getting a remake of FF7, only to discover it's the first part of three/four/many?
@Kunfoostu Selling key items as DLC or as preorder bonus is disgusting. But i see that the publishers got what they want. Convincing the new generation that paying key DLC in a €60 is normal like in a mobile game.
@Octane we’re you annoyed that you didn’t get the last of us 2 in the same box as last of us 1?
@kyleforrester87 Expectations.
If I walk into a store and I buy "Ocarina of Time Remake", only to discover that it only includes the first three dungeons, I'd be disappointed too. Maybe it has plenty of content to stand on its own, but a little warning (Part 1 or something like that) would be nice, don't you think?
@Octane boohoo expectations. Will you also be upset that Midgar is 10 times bigger than it was before? I’m sure it’ll be on the back of the box, anyway.
@Octane I think Final Fantasy 7 remake part 1 looks really weird. And what are we complaining about anyway.
I'm just glad I'm getting the Deluxe Edition with the steelbook so I don't have to look at that. I'm really disappointed that seemingly only the American box art has been recreated. Proper salty. I would've bought a second copy if the box art had been right.
Final Fantasy VII-XII generally had awful box art in America, compared to Europe / Japan. There's just a storied history of awful box art for the American audience (especially Ico - as already mentioned above.) Good god, I wake up to this? I want to go back to bed.
@Flaming_Kaiser I'm not complaining. I just think it's weird that it's called "FF7 remake", even though it's only a remake of part of the game. Most of FF7 isn't remade in FF7 remake
If "Part I" looks weird, what are they're going to call the next one?
@Matroska Its still a terrible move. It starts like this next time they will try too pull out something else.
@Matroska yeah i have seen a few american box arts from back in the day and i think the worse i ever saw was the one for Silent Hill, i don't know what they hell was going through their head when they greenlit that one
of course there are the rare occasions where they had a really good one like FFVII for example, yeah i prefer the classic plain white but 7's U.S one was nice, so was the U.S for DBGT Final Bout
@Octane well to be fair on that one none of the FF games that come in multiple parts have ever had that on them generally the second part will just have a -2 on the end so the next one will probably be called FINAL FANTASY VII-2 then VII-3 and so on
@FullbringIchigo True, but those weren't remakes, right? It's just that to me "FF7 remake" implies that the entirety of FF7 is remade. I can see this causing quite a lot of confusion if you don't pay attention to gaming news all the time.
@Octane oh i'm sure some people will be confused but that can't be helped although i think most people who are interested in this game and are fans of the old one would probably already know about it being in parts
also on the flip side if this is your first FF game then it probably wont bother you that much as this kind of multi part release is par for the course for a lot of games now a days, any game that's called a "Trilogy" for example is pretty much one game or one story split over multiple games and it's not the first FF game to do it either you have FFX and X-2 and the XIII Trilogy, yeah they may have changed up the game play a bit in each but they are one story over multiple games
@kyleforrester87 he’s not wrong though.
TLOU 2 wasn’t necessarily going to be a thing when the first one released, it was decided later that the series would go on.
I’m sorry but this point doesn’t make any sense, really.
Here we’re talking about a full game that is being remade and sold in chunks.
It probably will feature a lot of new stuff, as you said, but I don’t think it’s wrong to expect the entirety of the game being remade in a remake.
The Ocarina 3 dungeons thing is actually a very good example.
The original game included a lot of stuff you’d expect to be there in a remake, not the wrongest of expectations.
@clvr To be honest, I am making a somewhat extreme argument, because I think some people are putting way to much stock in to what's written on the front of the box. But my point is, it's an issue of perception - you might expect the story in the remake to follow the original beat for beat, but there is every chance it could be wildly different. I agree it is kind of confusing, as what will they call the next part? But then, they didn't call FFX "FFX-1" in advance of "FFX-2", did they? So the next one will be FFVII-2 Remake. There, sorted!
You can say "Oh, people will be upset when they realise it's just Midgar", but from my perspective any disappointment* will be countered by the fact Midgar is now 30-40 hours of (hopefully) solid video game. It's silly nit picking when SE are apparently doing such a good job, that's all.
*That's if you happen to live under a rock and buy it expecting the full remake on one disc.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Your right, it is pretty shi££y. Its shady as f**k that companies are allowed to do it to begin with. However I’ll still be buy the game and pretty much anything that’s released for it content wise as the original was one of my fave games of all time. I want this game in my life again.
@Kunfoostu I know im the problem as well im really want it. But i left quite a few games from $qaur€-€nix Final Fantasy 15 is a game i did not even bother with. And none of the remake after Final Fantasy 12 as they wont bother too put it on a disc.
@kyleforrester87 the FFX and FFX-2 example is the same as TLOU, the second part probably wasn’t going to be a thing originally (which would also explain the difference in tone, etc.),; how can you name something “part 1” if you’re not going to make a part 2?
I agree that this is not a big deal, but let’s not pretend a lot of uninformed people will buy it because it’s the remake of the game they grew up with thinking it’s all going to be in there. We informed gamers on forums are few and far between, let’s not pretend everyone knows this kind of things.
But as you say, if they compensate by making the first part of the game bigger, it’ll still probably be worth it.
@kyleforrester87 I hope too see a reversable one with the classic logo i loved those.
@FullbringIchigo I dont remember did they do that with FF13?
@Flaming_Kaiser do you mean the classic white background and Logo if you do then yes they did BUT it was only for the collectors edition, not the normal one but they did do it for the standard edition of XIII-2 (oh and yes these are MINE)
@FullbringIchigo Yes that looks great with the white background. Its a pity that they dont release anything retail anymore that is a remaster. My last Square Enix thing i bought was FF12 remastered.
@Flaming_Kaiser yeah physical versions of VII, VIII and IX would have been nice but i'm just glad to have them either way
although a VII and VIII double pack was released physically for the Switch in a few of the Asian regions, which is dumb it should have been world wide
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/09/final_fantasy_vii_and_viii_remastered_are_coming_to_switch_in_one_physical_pack
@FullbringIchigo I know but i dont own a Switch im not buying one for a remaster. I just have the PS4 and that will have too do i can get quite a few games for a console price.
@Flaming_Kaiser true
@FullbringIchigo Nothing against the Switch though. 😉 Great selection of games do you have a big Final Fantasy collection?
@Flaming_Kaiser i have added the 360 versions of XIII-2 and LR, Dissidia NT since i took this, i also have FFIII digitally on PSP, FFV, VI, VII, VIII, IX digitally on PS3, the remasters of X and X-2 on PSVita and PS3 and VII, VIII, and IX on PS4 and i will also be getting the Switch versions soon
i also have the VIII remaster on XB1 too
not to mention i have Afvent Children, Advent Children Complete all 3 Ultimanias, One the Way to a Smile: FFVII, FFXIII Fragments Before and Fragments After plus i have a few Play Arts Kai models and the Cloud Amiibos
@FullbringIchigo That where the days when you payed and played a full game. Final Fantasy 15 is nothing compared too the classis. The movie i have it 3 times CE DVD and two different Bluray versions. And those Beautifull Hardcover CE playerguides. Now they release games in a horrible state. Let you download the real ending on KH so it wont spoil the ending. Im so dissapointed in this generation.
@Flaming_Kaiser i have a load of guide books too oh and the Type-0 Manga
Type 0 Collector's Edition with a Book. 😆
I have not bought anything after the Remake of FF12 plus they have the worst store ever preorder never works. 🤣
