Star Ocean: First Departure R has a release date on PlayStation 4. This is a remaster of the PSP remake of the first Star Ocean, and it comes equipped with crisper visuals, newly recorded voice work, rebalanced difficulty, and an all new "speed mode".
Here's a more in-depth breakdown of the remaster's new features, taken from the press release:
- Full Voiceover – Players can choose between the original full voice cast from the PSP system version of the game in either Japanese or English, or the newly recorded version, featuring the voice cast from the original Super Famicom version in Japanese, which was previously released in Japan only.
- New Character Illustrations – Players can opt for the original character illustrations utilised in Star Ocean First Departure, or brand-new versions drawn by the famous illustrator Katsumi Enami (Star Ocean: The Last Hope).
- Speed Mode – Players can speed up movement to traverse the world more quickly.
- Adjusted Game Balance – Adjusted battle difficulty enabling players to enjoy more challenge in combat, a signature quality of the Star Ocean series.
Star Ocean: First Departure R is out on the 5th December in both Japan and here in the West. Will you be doing some retro JRPG adventuring? Explore the stars in the comments section below.

I’ve learnt my lesson. This time I’m going for the lowest available difficulty setting.
Great, looking forward to this!I never had a PSP so this will be completely new to me.Love the cute graphics.
It's got to be better than Integrity And Faithlessness..
Is this digital only?
Hmm loved Star Ocean 2 on the PS2 but I have never played another in the franchise, perhaps I will revisit the first......
@kiki3400 You Mean Star Ocean Till the End of Time? Star Ocean the Second Story was on the ps1. Also if you haven't play any of the others you can buy the 3 of them on the PSN
@Areus no i meant Star Ocean the second story. I played it on PS2, even though it was a PS1 game, Should have been clearer. Still have it in fact. Might dig it out.
i love this game and still own the PSP version but playing on that little screen can be a bit of a pain so yeah, this is a day one buy for me
also that reminds me i STILL have Integrity and Faithlessness to finish
Yet we still have no update on Second Evolution R releasing west, and it came out in Japan 4 years ago. -_- Once FD releases, SE will be the only title in the series not released on PS4 outside of Japan. I'm going to play the crud out of this, of course, but "we have no plans to release outside of Japan" is still the only info we have on SO:SER :/
