Update: Square Enix has reached out to us to clarify the comments of director Naoki Yoshida: "While not a confirmation, Yoshida-san expressed a hope that Final Fantasy XIV Online may one day appear on the next generation of Sony console."
Original Article: Final Fantasy XIV Online was always going to be playable on PlayStation 5 thanks to backwards compatibility, but it looks like the team at Square Enix has even bigger plans for what is currently the most popular MMO on the market. A fan gathering for the game was held in London last night, where director Naoki Yoshida supposedly got on stage to officially announce that Final Fantasy XIV Online is in development for Sony's next-gen console.
At the time of writing, the only proof we have of this actually occurring comes from the Final Fantasy UK Fans Twitter account. A profile not run by the company in question, but we find it rather hard to believe that a group of dedicated followers would simply make something like this up. This remains a rumour until we get official confirmation from Square Enix. However, it does look like MMO players will have something to look forward to playing late next year on their new piece of hardware.
Although, you probably shouldn't expect any sort of port announcement in the near future. We assume Sony will want to get its own console reveal out of the way in early 2020 before it allows publishers to casually reveal new titles, remasters, and ports heading to the PS5.
Nonetheless, would you be interested in playing Final Fantasy XIV Online on PS5? Role-play in the comments below.

@LiamCroft wow is ffxiv really the most popular mmo on the market? My brother and several of my friends have told me its really good, but i didn't realize it was that good. I may just check this out soon.
@ellsworth004 It’s really quite good but you have to pay a subscription unlike ESO. Even WoW now you can basically pay for your subscription through in-game gold.
@nessisonett i wonder if u can use ur subscription on pc and ps4?
Miles and miles better than ESO and every other MMO on console that I've tried. I still haven't played through the last two expansions so I will one day return to my bard and monk characters.
I think it's free up to level 35 or similar? Don't know if that's high or not?
I've recently re-downloaded it to try it again as whilst it looks lovely, I couldn't see the wood for the trees when trying to see where I was going when trying to follow a quest. For that, ESO takes some beating and it too was a fine MMO up until the "Kit-e-Kat" release.
Might get the PS5 version but only if the connection/ping is good. Only problem is I'll have to start a new character from scratch.
If anyone is interested in playing FF14, just know that it’s a final fantasy game first, before it’s an MMO.
Don’t go thinking it’s like WoW, or any other MMO, where you grind to max level. No. You have to pace yourself for the long adventure and learn to love the story.
And if you’re a fan of big epics, like the Trails series. Then you’ll love FF14. Because IMO, FF14 is the best final fantasy that came out since X on the PS2.
Wow, 1st on PS3 then PS4 and PC and now potentially PS5? Talk about Cross-platform!
I'm a big Final Fantasy XIV fan, but to call it the "most popular MMO on the market" is not only disingenuous, but downright inaccurate. WoW, for better or worse, is the most popular MMO on the market, and to say otherwise is to live in denial.
@throwmeaname I'd agree with you there. Heavensward was fantastic.
@grahamd Na. I thought ESO was a bit crap. The only thing I liked about it was the leaning against a wall flipping a coin emote. I wish they had that in Red Dead Online.
@throwmeaname that is certainly a lot of praise. i would have liked to try it, but the monthly fees kills it for me. only once the sub model is scrapped will i give it a go. i have almost completely lost faith in s-e ever since ff xiii, but seems like this is the one project that has redeemed them over the past 10 years (other than dq xi, but that is really an enix game and not from the square side of the company).
It's not as good as eso
The real question is, now that Microsoft supports cross platform play, will FF XIV come to Xbox?
Nice. Might finally give me an excuse to try it out. Looking forward to this!
@ellsworth004 You definitely can, I used to do it when I owned it on PS3 and pc before they got rid of the PS3 version. My friend also switches from PS4 to PC if someone is using the tv
@javiboy2 what is the monthly price?
@ellsworth004 $13 a month for the base plan and up to $15 if you want more characters per server. There's also 60 day subscription cards but these days they cost more than just paying per month. Overall I think it's worth it if you end up playing a few times a week.
@javiboy2 So the prices are still the same as it was first launched? I recalled it being cheaper if you subscribed multiples months in advanced.
@WanderingBullet Well yes and no, it depends on the type of plan you get. The entry plan which is what I used to do is $13 a month for 1 character per server. The standard plans are $15, $14, and $13 per month for 30, 90, and 180 days respectively, which allow for 8 characters per server but a casual player would have no need for that many characters so the entry plan of $13 a month is the best option in this case. The 60 day time card is $30 but it's for the standard sub and not the entry level which is already $15 anyway so you don't actually save with a time card.
Thanks. You're right about time cards being more expensive cause I used to use them to pay for the subscriptions.
@javiboy2 thanks for the info!
Great! Might get back to it with the PS5.
After playing ESO for some time .. I think FFXIV is much better.
In ESO I had never the feeling of progression for my character .. maybe because of the monster leveling in ESO.
And I play RPGs for the progression ...
@Porco it’s a shame the sub model is a barrier to most. And I understand why you’d be reluctant to try it.
TBH, after being frustrated with FF15’s base story and my lukewarm impression of kingdom hearts 3, like you, I started to lose hope in SE.
But the recent release of FF14’s Shadowbringer rekindled my hope for the company. There’s a lot of talent and creativity unrecognized in SE, and IMO - all the good developers have migrated to the FF14 project to make it one of the best final fantasy game to date. The fact that it’s an MMO, imo, is just a byproduct of that success.
Trust me when I say, FF14 is final fantasy at its core. And it’s one of the best.
