With the reveal of the official PlayStation 5 logo, a lot of fans have been wondering whether black is going to be the PS5's signature colour -- much like blue is the signature colour of the PS4. While we're not convinced that the freshly unveiled logo is indicative of the next-gen console's colour scheme, we love the look of this fanmade box art, which uses black as the system's signature colour.
Obviously Ghost of Tsushima hasn't been confirmed for PS5 yet -- at the time of writing it's still just a PS4 title -- but the game's fantastic cover art is a perfect fit for this little experiment. As far as we're concerned, that's a gorgeous game case.
Would you be happy with black PS5 boxes? Or do you think Sony should adopt a different colour for its upcoming system? Give us an honest opinion in the comments section below.

Is it just me that gets unbearable chills just seeing the side bar and top bar not matched up?
OMG That logo looks... just like it looks on PS4 games. Anyway, fantastic mock-up!
Looks good! But also very PS3
I prefer the blue. I think it helps the games stand out on the shelfs. Blue for PlayStation, green for Xbox and red for Nintendo.
No doubt that black looks slick, but blue is a nice way to differentiate from the PS3 and PS2 box arts.
@Deadlyblack @AdamNovice I really like the blue as well, but if the PS5 has blue boxes things are going to get very confusing for the average consumer.
@ShogunRok That's actually a good point. True that the PS3 boxes were gray with the black and PS4 had blue on blue.
Whoah weird! I was just thinking yesterday that they should be black!
It seems boring but after all these years of colored boxes i think its almost unique! And its classy and wont clash with any box art most importantly
Black = PC
Blue = PS4/5
Red = Switch
Green = XBO
Let's keep things simple and easy to find in a shop.
I'm not one to get excited over logos or box colors but whatever they do go with won't look as good as this fan made box art. Hats off to the artist.
Here's the original for comparison.
Now let's see gold trim.
I like it, specially the black/transparent box.
PS3 boxes are not black, only the label is black, box is white.
But they will probably keep the blue boxes for PS5. I think Sony is traying hard to link PS4 to PS5 as much as posible. Keeping the same box with just a different label will help for that.
@AdamNovice I do wonder if they’re going to change it up, though, to differentiate PS5 from PS4.
After all, PS4 will still very much be present in stores for the next three or four years.
Wouldn’t mind if they went back to black but I don’t mind blue either
Well considering UHD covers are black anyways, it seems fitting.
Yes, Make it. Not a fan of the Blue.
Would actually be super cool if their marketing and advertising was in greys and whites. Would look so unique and classy
@PunkRx_Lockly rose gold
Maybe they could make the game cases grey along with the console as homage to the PS1.
Or maybe stick with blue to connect it with the PS4 but go back to the PS1 smaller style of case.
They will have to change the look of the boxes somewhat though, so as to not confuse the general customer and if it's through going black, I would be fine.
Hmmm. That’s going to be the task for the PS5’s marketing team. Never thought that it’ll be confusing if both consoles will have a blue colour scheme. You can make a case also it’s the colour scheme for the PS3 boxes as well. I prefer they stick with Blue, obviously. Blue is a more attractive colour to the human eyes than black.
Black all the way, didn't hurt PS2 games from flying off shelves. I always thought the blue looked a bit cheap & tacky.
Well they need something to differentiate it from PS4. Especially since the new console will be cross platform, and likely support for PS4 will continue for the forseeable future.
Blacks not a bad shot. But I would prefer the inverse.
White with black writing.
No thanks! Little bit bland
I would love too see them shrink too PS1 boxsize we dont have booklets anymore so why waste the platic.
'Ride On Time' is the only Black Box I know.
Would that mean that Push Square would go all black too?
It's pretty good, like ps2 cover.
I think we should stick with the blue, helps differentiate PC to PS4 to XB1 to the Switch much easily.
Also blue is more neutral so will go along with more cover art easier, black suits something like the cover of GOT but would it suit Astro Bot 2 or Knack 3? (hehe) I don't think so.
i just want the cases to look meatier. i like the xbox ones cause they look more premium
@Flaming_Kaiser I was going to suggest this. Reduce to CD case size to save on materials and weight etc...
@get2sammyb Maybe smaller cases like @Flaming_Kaiser said?
I think they should keep blue as the standard colour.
What I do want are consistent spines on the box. NA seem to do this right, with all boxes having a coloured spine and the game's logo. Whereas in the Europe it seems to be a mix of plain spine and logo, coloured spine and generic text or generic text and plain spine. It makes my shelf look weird.
@ThroughTheIris56 I think the logos on the spine make it look like a mess. I prefer the plain text. But I don't mind a few exceptions here and there. Actually, I don't really care that much about it
@nessisonett just you, pal
when you go black you never go back, lol, i just had to..
I could imagine a white banner with a blue PS5 logo on it.
Black is the new..erm..black?
It’s not going to matter all that much seeing as more and more people are buying games digitally these days.
As long as it compliments my ps3 collection on my shelves I’m good.
@DonJorginho This would likely cause a nightmare for parents and such for purchasing the correct versions of the game.
PS4 is likely to be supported for quite some time post PS5 release. Having identical boxes with only the 4 and 5 switched around it bound to cause selling issues amongst uninitiated family members or people purchasing gifts for friends etc.
@Shellcore And it looks cool 😆
Would make this remake a lot more special
@Octane Ill rewrite it its a mess. 🤣
@Grindagger Maybe a Black and Blue colour scheme perhaps?
Make it exciting and force the users to look up the colors, I say! Go with puce text on razzmatazz...or perhaps gamboge text on Caput Mortuum.
Nah. I work on a printing press, and I can say from printing experience that luxor red foil on a flat black background is absolutely stunning (on flat, smooth white paper looks great, too). Every time you turn that package—even slightly—and the light will reflect on the foil and provide a PS5 pop that’s so beautiful it’s impossible to put into words.
@Rhaoulos nobody buys PC physical anymore anyways
@Octane Fair enough. Obviously some logos work better than others, and it can be a pain when it's hard to read.
Smaller packaging, less waste.
that looks very slick I like it.
That looks very VERY clean
I say either stick with Blue and physically alter the boxes to make them stand out from PS4 boxes (like make them smaller), or inverse it to a White color scheme with Blue lettering.
Matte bubble gum pink all the way.
I buy everything digitally so not focused on box colors. But the black looks great.
That's seriously badass.
I remember when a Switch title shipped in a Black Case...
People went crazy for Darksiders and the price shot up through the roof.
I like blue background more, they could change the lettering color to Red or Black
@rjejr The PS4 one you posted is on the PlayStation website. Not sure if you meant that was fan made?
https://blog.us.playstation.com/2019/12/12/ghost-of-tsushima-launches-on-ps4-summer-2020/
I like the blue, but they do need to design it so people don't accidentally buy the wrong version (reduce the chance, at least).
I think it might be silver in colour, similar to the original PlayStation platinum games boxes, if I’m remembering right of course. And with it being 25 years, maybe silver or gold. Either way whatever they choose, I’ll be over the moon I’m already saving for the new console and release day titles...and quite frankly, I cannot wait!
@Gravity_Bear I thought the one I posted was real and official, but reading my comment now it is a little confusing.
From now on all my posts are just going to be - I'm so glad we're still getting box are and everything hasn't gone all-digital yet. It's probably only a matter of time. Or box art, but only codes inside. Though if discs go away and get replaced w/ carts instead I'm ok w/ that, as long as the price remains about the same. Nintneod seems to have a price problem with their carts. And we all know what happened with Sony and it's Vita memory cards.
Future is all digital though. And streaming, urgh.
@rjejr You're fine, I just wasn't sure if you meant the art work or the cover as a whole (in regards to the black article version). You gave everyone the original image to compare to, which is nice.
Admittedly, the black PlayStation borders and case do look a lot better than the original for Ghost of Tsushima. It's nice when they change things to match the cover.
My second paragraph about the blue borders was just about cover identification in general.
Boxes?... It's 2020, don't be wasteful.
I've decided that any games from 2007/2008 onwards isn't logical to get on disc anymore, unless it's like some kind of special edition or whatever. At least for PlayStation games I've gone all-digital for the PS4, because what's the point of messing around with cases and discs?
"Resellability"? - Better make sure you know you want the game before you impulse-buy.
And don't even bring up "I want it on disc so I actually own it physically and can use it for the rest of my life." argument, because it's heavily flawed in this day and age. (Not only will you stop playing the games anyway, but whatever you have on your precious discs is immediately outdated. The vast majority if not all will probably need an update for whatever reason. Why would you buy that?)
I'm from the late '80s, by the way, so I've been through the age of boxed and cased games. Cute and nostalgic and all, but that's for the old games of then.
Add a resolution for this year to ditch physical copies of games and save materials, space, even time. Oh, and demand collector's editions with download-codes. Why hasn't that been a thing for like a decade already?...
