The PlayStation 4's back button attachment doesn't release to the public for another couple of weeks, but it looks like certain outlets have already gotten the go-ahead on posting their impressions to the internet. Reviews are popping up all over the place, and the feedback generally seems to be overwhelmingly positive. The device hits stores in the US on 23rd January and 14th February in Europe for a price of $29.99/€29.99. But let's cut to the action -- here's a selection of reviews for the PS4 Back Button attachment.
IGN
Whether the Back Button Attachment is a sign of a PS5 future to come, or just a neat, additional offering from Sony, I’m very glad to have it. Its arrival may be as odd as first trying to plug in the attachment, but after a few days playing with it, it already feels like an integral part of my PlayStation playtime. And if it’s here to stay, I’d welcome a world where it’s built into the controller.
Polygon
This attachment won’t sink all of the companies selling high-end pro controllers — those products still offer way more flexibility and customization options than simply adding two rear paddles. But for folks looking to dive into the world of back-panel buttons without having to spend more than $100 on an entirely new controller, the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment does its job admirably well, and at a fraction of the cost.
Venture Beat
The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is an easy way to add more functionality to your PlayStation controller. The idea is to free up your other fingers by programming common actions to fingers that are normally doing nothing. This is useful for shooters where you may want to keep your thumbs on the analog sticks at all times. Now, you can jump or melee without having to move to the face buttons.
Mashable
If you're looking at this thing and struggling to think of any games where back button commands might be helpful, then sure, this probably isn't a product for you. But Sony's first attempt to offer fans a cost-effective option for adding back buttons to the DualShock 4 is a big success, and a no-brainer purchase if you've ever shopped for that feature and balked at the third-party prices.

Have mine on pre-order. Playing the Witcher 3 is a great use case... Holding X to sprint means no control over camera. Can't wait to test these
Good to hear. Had a bunch of points/coupons at Gamestop so I will be picking one up for free, can't wait to try it out. Really hope it somehow works with the DS5
I have one pre-ordered, figured it's worth a shot.
@NathanUC Oh man, that’s a great use of it, Dark Souls and Bloodborne would be so much easier to play if you could run and move the camera. Currently employing a method of using my thumb to move the right stick with my ring finger on O 😅
It reminds me of the Wii motion plus, which was included in later versions of the wiimote. It could be a nice addition qu'en ou need an extra trigger without taking your fingers off the sticks
@NathanUC Same with the Batman games. I hadn’t thought of that. Thank you. I went from not caring to being sold on it with that once comment.
The only issue I have is they are not a new input command. They simply move a input you can already use on the controller to the back. Its possible the DS5 could use a B1 and B2 command on the back side for a new input and not just to remap current commands.
They should add an analogue attachment to the move controller's
@nessisonett Wait... what? 😂
How is that even possible? Are you pushing the O button with your knuckle?
@Th3solution I use the tip of my thumb to move the right stick while my ring finger’s tip is pushed against O. It means I’m basically holding the controller just in my left hand and is hugely uncomfortable but I beat the Dark Souls trilogy employing that method!
Can't wait to try it, I hope ps5 have this as a standard 😃
@nessisonett Most impressive. I’ll keep that method in mind when I go back to play Dark Souls again. 😆 It can’t end up much worse than I usually play.
Pre-Ordered it a while ago for 25.99 GBP
@nessisonett I literally created an account just to tell you how I do it because your method seems very uncomfortable. I use my thumb fully on r3, index finger does X,o,square and triangle, middle finger on R1 and R2. I will use my index finger for attacking if I'm locked on though.
IGN 10/10 Impressive expensive
@LiamCroft I'm really curious about this. Please make an extended review as soon as you can.
I didn't want to invest more money in my ps, since the ps5 is on it's way, but.. Also, it would be nice to know if this is compatible with the new ps5 controllers or if they are already coming with feature build in, before buying the back buttons.
Poorly written article which does not mention what it is nor what it will cost. I have heard of the back button, but was unclear of what it does. Thanks to the comments, I read it is a self-mappable extra button for games. I'd be interested in this as well. Again though - poorly written piece here, Pushsquare.
@Party_Cannon It helps if you read the introductory paragraph where the price is displayed. You're also welcome to search for more information on the device using this very site.
Noice but i'm still not getting one
not while that piece of **** company GAME have it exclusively
I like the idea of the back buttons. I really hope the DS5 pads have them built into them
I dunno if this is for me...only game I think it's useful is maybe OW but I'm playing that game less and less so I don't know if I should buy it
i have enough buttons to press, so i definitive dont need anymore.
I use an xbox elite 2 controller with a brook dongle that has 4 paddles but just use 2 so this will be perfect for gamers it makes games to much better and more skilled.
Like the division i can run while looking round and switching or reloading guns at the same time with out having to take my thumb off the stick to press Square or triangle as they work though the back paddles.
I think this might have use for me in Breakpoint but not in ESO. Wish it would’ve added just an extra button function that would allow for not having to flip bars in ESO.
@DonJorginho - You can do that anyway by remapping the button inputs in the accessibility settings of your PS4.
That said this add-on is a great budget intro to pro type pads. I bought a 4 paddle Scuf Impact last year and the extra inputs make a huge difference. Being able to dodge and reload without taking my thumb off the stick in Destiny 2 for instance makes for a much better experience.
I'll definitely be picking one of these up as a backup for when my Scuf is charging, I really miss those paddles when I use my stock DS4.
@Shigurui Really? Jesus christ how did I not notice lmao, maybe the rage made me stupid lol.
Tbh I don't think it would help me mapping to another button rather than the paddle as I struggle when I have to take my focus off the battle to heal, so to have the paddle where my fingers rest normally without having to think about it is perfect.
But I can see this work well for FPS games aswell as games like The Witcher 3 where I find it hard to look around whilst holding down X when running.
@DonJorginho - Hah, I think it escapes a lot of people even though its been an option for a long time now, really useful feature.
I use an xbox one elite 2 pad with a brook dongle it has 4 paddles much better using 3 at the moment.
One for reloading, changing weapon , moving from place to place X button in the division 2. So i can look around as i am moving and reload while looking and change weapon while running.
