The humble PlayStation 5 logo, nestled on a plain black background, has become the most liked Instagram image ever uploaded by a gaming company – in 48 hours. Clearly the reveal at CES 2020 resonated with the wider public, but it has attracted some ridicule for its similarity to the PlayStation 4’s logo.
Speaking with Business Insider Japan, as translated by Gematsu, newly minted PlayStation boss Jim Ryan explained the reasoning behind the design: “It is important to give off a sense of consistency for products within the PlayStation brand,” he said. “It is a must for anyone who sees [the logo] to immediately and positively think, ‘That’s PlayStation’.”
Ryan also suggested that, as PS4 will remain relevant long after the PS5’s release, it’s important for all players to feel like they’re a part of the same community – irrespective of which system they’re playing on. “There are over 100 million PlayStation 4 owners – there is a community there,” he added. “We have an obligation to keep them happy, interested, and absorbed [in PlayStation].”

Since playstation is a successful brand I don't think they need to change the design of the logo.
I think ps5 will be a more expensive machine compared to ps4, ps5 at $500 while ps4 / ps4 pro msrp discounted to $200 / $300 sound about right.
I was hoping it would be called the "PS4 U"
I don't really expect the PS5 to feel as 'distinct' from the PS4 as previous generations did, so maybe that'll be a strategy going forward.
@Chlocean They could have gone with Playstation Series P. Missed opportunity, Sony.
Dont care about the noise around the logo. How many other tech companies change their branding between generations? Dont see apple getting ridiculed. The consistent branding makes sense for PS5 . If it sees Sony knock it out of the park again next gen, i'm all for it
One of the most successful and recognisable logos in the tech world. Why would they change it?
Who cares about the logo, the only thing that matters are the games.
I think people are just nitpicking for nothing. What do they expect? something revolutionary and completely new? If it's not broken, don't fix it.
I never would've guessed that the logo would be a topic of discussion this much lol
I thought it spoke for itself really. It makes total sense.
The man speaks sense. I mean, that's exactly what it is. It's continuity. And right now Sony Playstation is flying high.
Why take a risk and change the design when it's so highly recognized.
Simply, good old fashioned business acumen.
You have to remember that this all started on Twitter. Twitter is the most useless platform on the internet. You get idiocy like this, then you get “woke” clowns who try to destroy everyone’s life, then you have the presid... never mind.
The logo isn't important and hasn't changed since the PS2 (much like the controller), so it has no reason to change now, especially since the PS5 will just be another evolution more powerful than the PS4 with few new features unlike Nintendo consoles that completely change between generations.
Thank God they didn't call it 'PlayStation Play Five Station X Series Five Station' Like the other makers confusing console name coming out next year to PS5 Logo is perfect
@thefirst I honestly think that’s the reason. Sony gave people nothing else to talk about.
@Chlocean PS4 Vita
what about the playstation3 community? people still play on that system and are going to be for a long time, i am one of them.
