We grew up in the nineties, so we’re not quite sure how we feel about the era being considered retro now. We suppose it has been 30 years since 1990 – in fact, that’s a frightening thought, isn’t it? Daymare: 1998 promises to celebrate the decade at least, delivering a “multi-character” survival horror story “with tons of references” to the period.
“The scene is set with a secret research facility, a deadly chemical weapon, and a special security team tasked with investigating an incident with the potential to become more than a routine security breach,” the blurb reveals. “Follow the steps of an elite soldier, a helicopter pilot, and a forest ranger as they play out their roles in an event that transforms one peaceful small town into a dead-zone and its citizens into bloodthirsty monsters.”
Just like the titles of the time, you should expect “limited ammo and save points, backtracking, collectibles, tough enemies, and more”, so if you think that video games have moved on – well, this may not be for you. It looks very budget in terms of presentation but has received relatively good reviews on PC since launching last year. You can play it on the PlayStation 4 from 28th April.

I assume ‘celebrating 1998’ more roughly equates to ‘celebrating Resident Evil’.
Tons of REferences.
I can consider early 90s gaming like genesis retro, but the decade as a whole doesn't feel retro, especially 1998.
The protagonist looks terrible, almost unfinished. But the rest of the trailer looked fantastic. Very excited to see more of this.
1998 was still 22 years ago and that's a whole generation in terms of families - let alone console gaming. My youngest, now an adult, wasn't alive in the 90's so I guess it is Retro now...
To me, the 90's doesn't seem all that long ago, but I grew up in the 70's and a teenager for the 80's. I am still surprised by watching old movies I enjoyed and then realising they are over 20yrs old. I can't believe that some of the 80's movies are approaching 40yrs old now...
Doesn't look budget at all to me except strangely the human faces.
Looks pretty good actually!!
@nessisonett IIRC it started out as RE3 fan made project if RE3 adopted over-the-shoulder mechanics. I'm sure I read that in an article about it. So yeah, very Resident Evil.
Looks awsome but please change the main character it looks like a really. 😆
@get2sammyb One Two, consoles kneel before you, that's what I said now..."
