Earlier this week, Sony announced that it will be restricting the PlayStation Network's download speeds in an attempt to preserve Internet access for as many people as possible, and lessen the impact on service providers during the coronavirus outbreak. Initially, this incentive was limited to European territories, but now the hardware manufacturer has announced that it is taking the same precautions across the US.
In an updated statement on the PlayStation Blog, group president Jim Ryan explained: "Beginning today, we will take similar measures [to Europe] in the United States, and we will continue to take appropriate action to do our part to help ensure Internet stability as this unprecedented situation continues to evolve. We are grateful for the role we play in helping deliver a sense of community and entertainment in these very trying times. Thank you again for your support, your patience, and for being part of the PlayStation community. Please stay home and stay safe."
If you missed the original statement, it said: "Players may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads, but will still enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the support and understanding from our community, and their doing their part, as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone."
Thus far the impact seems largely limited, but we're monitoring the situation and will be sure to update as soon as we learn more about this escalating issue. We can say that with Push Square situated in the UK, we haven't noticed a significant difference in our download speeds on PS4 just yet, but then there may be some time before it truly takes hold.

Eh, just putting the PS4 into rest mode for my big downloads then. No worries.
Well it's only fair that the US has these restrictions like we do. 😤😤
A week ago I downloaded patch for Strange Brigade. While I was always slowed by my connection limits (around 5-6MB/s), that patch 4.8GB downloaded for more than hour (around 1-2MB/s). Don't know if it was because of PSN limit or my provider limit, the thing is it's much slower nowadays. (EU, CZ)
Doesn't bode well for Stadia. Not that anyone's using it anyway.
That's fine, I likely (hopefully) will have work anyway, and can download things while I'm sleeping or doing other things. No biggie.
@Paranoimia The concepts of joy and entertainment don't bode well for Stadia
BS. Comcast can handle the load. PSN is slow already.
So it's going from what to what for download speed
Can anybody tell me what the DL speed will be or what their relative speeds have been over the pond. Im 300mb/sec download from isp. Not like i care much just curious how much throttling will be done
They don't provide numbers though and psn downloads are not that fast anyway.
I'm definitely sticking with my physical copy of FFVII Remake, even if it ends up arriving weeks later. PSN is already ridiculously slow as is.
OK, time to cancel PlayStation Now.
Not a huge deal yet, but online games that require a large patch to continue online play would be an issue.
Had no issues with downloading new Borderlands content
Just as there's new updates for Monster Hunter World and Crash Team Racing.
Guess I will.be playing on my Xbox One then.
My digital copy of FF VII Remake will take FOREVER to download.
I mean my speeds were already pretty lousy on the PS4 compared to my eggbox so they must have been doing this for years. To be fair though the speeds on my switch indicate they're really really doing their part especially when I play splatoon 2.
Physical first when possible always have always will.
@JohnKarnes yes, I agree physical is thee best way to go. But what happens when said physical game needs an update? And the update is 15gb. Not all of us play campaign mode. So I'm stuck waiting 3-4 hours for the game to download and another hour for it to copy...
@Paranoimia stadia is it's own thing. Sony can only slow down playstation network. Not the entire internet..
They already restrict internet speeds on PSN to begin with, so just more of the same.
How does this differ from the normally AWFUL download speeds of the Crapstation 4?
@The_FastLife Thank you, Captain Obvious. 👍
Why didn't they blast that across my console when I get on it. No wonder my s*** was actin weird.
@Paranoimia Ur welcome👍👍👍😀😀😀🖕🖕🖕🖕
@Paranoimia by the way if you were being sarcastic, you lost me. Learn how to write better.
@The_FastLife Oh, I lost you? Apologies, I'll type slower next time.
I'm still getting a 158mbps connection (roughly 15MB/s download speed) - and that's only on Wi-Fi. It's typically 220-260mbps wired. Maybe it only kicks in after you've downloaded a certain amount.
Well last night i had about 4mbs for the 8gig dl of new bl3 dlc then after it another 5gig dl that went about 8mbs so i haven't really been bothered by it
PSN download speeds have always been garbage for me so I'm seeing zero difference. I got 13MB/s before and I'm getting 13MB/s now.
@huyi Oh sure, throw us under a bus too.
I'm with you SONY since Microsoft released their beast of console XBSX, than I definitely decided to switch to XBSX for my main console at Day One and wait for PS5Pro for my PS4 games and for PS exclusive games. I certainly advise all fans of the PS console not to buy the first edition of PS5 which on is everything boosted (CPU variable frequency per all cores, GPU variable frequency for all compute units (just 36 lol), and with only 825Gb of internal storage (that mean just 700Gb for games) without the possibility of a upgrade now and for the next few years, but to think well and remember all the first editions of each PS console. I have PS4Pro and PSVR at the moment, the console is hear stronger than Boing 747 and is unable to hold steady framerate in Battlefield V online mode, but it falls below 25FPS!!!
@Angry_Chainsaw What's this gotta do with the current topic post? If you wanna make this type of comment please do it on a relevant post.
Is not just US and UK, even here in Malaysia the connection pretty much sucks. Thank God I'm a physical gamer and not digital.
@Leon_93 It's gotta do with everything. I have fiber optical internet with speed of download 1Gb/s and upload 300Mb/s, and every time when I go to check internet connection and check the speed of internet in settings if PS4Pro, that speed never not exceed 300Mb/s at best. I pay for this internet monthly only because of the gaming that the PSN does not enable me, I even have a static IP, which I also pay especially, and nothing. Do not deceive the PS will soon be buried after the new console is expelled. Why? Because they just weren't ready!!! And why weren't they ready to ask Mark and Ryan and the other friends, Shawn has retired at least in time...
I can't speak for everyone, but if losing some download speed means that more people will have access to the service, then I'm all for it.
If people don't start keeping their asses at home, and taking this sh¡t seriously, we're still gonna be fighting this thing six months from now.
If I'm waiting for something to download then I'm generally watching something else on stream so how is this going to make any difference?

Username checks out
You know if they are going to pull this they shouldn't be charging for PlayStation plus in the us or the uk. I mean their wireless nic card at least in the first gen sucks enough and limits download speeds too much already (was getting 10mbps with a 100 mbps connection from my isp) now they are throttling the internet speeds too. I think they have just made up my mind on which next gen console I'm going to get.
@Matroska your math is way off. 158 Mbps is approximately 19.75 MBps. Sony PS4 NIC's are extremely optimized for latency and not download rate. I have a 110Mbps internet connection speed, and even before the restriction PSN wouldn't allow downloads faster than 19Mbps on a wired connection with an original release PS4.
Also, if you could use proper nomenclature, it would make your post more helpful to others reading them. Megabits per second is Mbps or Mb/s and megabytes per second is MBps or MB/s. Internet data rates are measured in Mbps and file transfer rates are measured in MBps.
@Toypop Reducing the service level does absolutely nothing. It doesn't save them money, it simply pisses off customers.
@Angry_Chainsaw PS4 NIC's aren't optimized for data transfer rates. They are optimized for latency. While the download speeds suck, and it's frustrating, I've never had latency issues with online gaming on PS4 but neverending latency issues on XBone.
@ChipBoundary I distinguished between them with mbps and MB/s. And I said "roughly" because the quick and vague way is to divided the megabits by 10, just to get a general ballpark. Yes it's more accurate to divide by 8, but 10 is far easier to do and gets you the general gist. I mean this non-snarkily but it seems like you have Asperger's or similar though, so I know that people being non-specific and vague can be frustrating. Just bear in mind most people don't have a problem with it.
@Broosh but with people with gigabit (like me) are getting bottlenecked but also don't need to be in rest mode, lol.
Kids these days... I remember back when Al Gore invented the internet and it’d take at least a half hour to download a single four-minute song through Napster. 🤪
@ChipBoundary this isnt about saving money. Its about making sure everybody gets to use the network, at the same time.
@jgrangervikings1 I remember when my older brother downloaded the Quake 3 mod called Bid for Power on our old dial up internet. It was in 4 parts, each 120 mb and it took from Friday to Sunday to download it all.
I don't miss that at all.
@Loftimus that was exactly my point. So I'm not sure what the point of your response was.
@ChipBoundary yeah, it looks like we're in agreement about that (my apologies) but, it shouldn't piss anyone off. We're all in the same boat.
@Loftimus I'm saying that them throttling the speed would serve no purpose other than pissing people off under normal circumstances, because it wouldn't save them any money, contrary to what the person I responded to implied/said. I know they are doing it to prevent the systems from crashing.
13MB/s before, 13MB/s after.
Virgin media, UK.
Like PSN isn’t slow enough already. 😞
@Angry_Chainsaw
Yes, buy the console that has ZERO exclusives for 2 years, has every game available on PC, and has been rubbish since the brand launched in 2001. Good plan. Smart chap, you are.
Yes, I can already see this. But necessary.. But many online games are having problems. Right now grand turismo sport is down.. This is not acceptable..
And this is why Stadia fails straight away not because they stuffed up the launch and it's not got features they promised. But if any ISP slows down the connection which they can and do at certain times of the day streaming as a perm gaming solution doesn't work and it won't for 10 years and then when connections get faster content gets better and connections will always be slightly behind to deliver that content for all at the same speed
@Ralizah That won't help. We'll see between 50 and 100% of the game files as dl only. Pretty standard for games near or over 100gb. As well as a day 1 patch which can be in the 5-15gb range.
That's why a game that normally takes me about 30 minutes took almost 3 hours to dl last night.
It's annoying, but I understand.
Also, Xbox fanboys, just go away. MS probably doesn't need to lower speeds because no one is playing on XB anyway.
HAHA this isn't affecting me at all!!! Cries in slow, middle of nowhere internet
I'm from Saxony in Germany. Still PSN connection 610.1 Mbit/s | 51.3Mbit/s on my PS4Pro
Yes I have noticed and it sucks, i cant hardly play firewall anymore. Please fix it.
I've been downloading the 1.18 update for Call of Duty MW and it's restart over 5 times even in rest mode.
I have noticed when playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare. Online there were alot of Glitches during Game play. where the game would freeze up.
And then I would get a Network connection Error stating I wasnt connected then I would immediately get kicked out of the Game. and then I would have to close out and restart the game from my Group.
This happens intermittently during game play with my selected group
I downloaded a couple games from the backlog just in case this weekend and it did seem a few tics slower (I believe the files were around 9 GB) but since I did it in the background while I played a game it wasn’t too noticeable. This will require a little advanced planning. Here’s hoping this situation passes quickly 🤞🏼
TY America for that make me happy America cares
Michiana here. Ran my speeds yesterday, 20+Mb wifi, 50+ hardwire. I also run a 200Mb connection from Xfinity
Welp... looks like I'm not playing COD MW for 2 days with my 48 hour download.... thanks psn for making me be productive! [Smiles and gives a thumbs up sarcastically] You can go f*** yourselves. [Big smile with 2 thumbs up] lolz. Slight sarcasm btw. Haha
