Microsoft is currently engaged in a strong public relations battle against Sony, and some would argue it’s winning the fight. While the PlayStation 5 has attracted more attention than the Xbox Series X thus far, the Team in Green has been quietly chipping away at its competitor, touting better technical specifications and adopting a more “open” attitude than its Japanese rival.
Case in point: boss Phil Spencer popped up on an IGN podcast recently to share some of his thoughts on the impending next-gen launch. “I feel really good about how Xbox Series X lines up [with the PS5],” he beamed, before complimenting some of the features in Sony’s console, like the SSD hard drive and 3D audio. “It's impressive, we like that; we saw the work that they did [with the PS5].”
Naturally, though, Spencer thinks his company’s box is better. “We took a holistic view on our platform from CPU to GPU to RAM; the Velocity architecture; latency, back compat. It took us years to get to this point. When we finally saw the public disclosure [of the PS5], I felt even better about the choices we made on our platform. I expected that I would.”
Price will, of course, be important – and it’s starting to sound like this could be Microsoft’s trump card. “I believe we have a plan that can win,” he continued. “I feel good about the price we're going to be able to get to. I feel good about the price and the performance capabilities that we have for Series X. I feel incredibly strong about the overall package.”
It’s likely that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will cost the same, and considering Sony’s system has a disadvantage in teraflops, this could become a marketing headache for the Japanese giant to navigate. It’ll all come down to the games in the end, though, and with rumours swirling regarding a Demon’s Souls remake and all-new Silent Hill, the PlayStation maker still has plenty of ammunition in its arsenal.

Well, it’s true in the sense that Sony’s box this time is a different experience. The XSeX is basically a PC that looks like a fridge, with the advantages and disadvantages that entails. The PS5 is more focused on innovation than the XSeX but seems to be slightly less powerful. It remains to be seen who’ll win the exclusives war, I wouldn’t bet against Microsoft with Obsidian, Ninja Theory and the like all developing for the new console. All I can say is that it’s a good time to subscribe to Game Pass PC.
Smart strategy to keep banging that drum, but I have a feeling that showing off the actual games is what will sway the most people. And there's still plenty of time to prepare for that.
Xbox first, ps later. Never thought I'd say that but here we are.
Demons Souls remake trumps the extra teraflops! No contest for me.
They are both powerful enough to the point where exclusives would be the differentiator.
this site loves bringing up Xboxs Guf way to much.
@bighal no disrespect but I don’t understand why people want this. Demons souls is already in HD format. I would so much rather that time be spent on remaking a ps2 game since those aren’t from an hd gen. I just feel like Bluepoint could do better things, if it’s true that’s what they are making. And it has nothing to do with being a fan of the series either. I’m a huge metal gear fan, and when I heard they might be remaking mgs4, I thought the exact same thing, waste of time. Go back and redo mgs1 if anything.
Well, what did you expect the competition to say? "We're gonna get clobbered?" Of course he's got to say they've got the better product, and specs-wise, they do in quite a few regards.
Games and talent. That's what's going to win the fight. And so far, neither side has shown their cards. Engine demos and BC abilities do not count.
Yea I watched the interview taking shots as PS while Sony was giving funds to help for the virus.
One year ago : 'I'm not going to sacrifice performance for the sake of price."
Now it's all about price. Typical...
No doubt Xbox is ahead on points in these early rounds but there's always that sneaking suspicion that Sony have it's right arm cocked, ready to deliver a knockout blow given the chance
@FearIsUseful
LMAO! My thoughts exactly.
Here's the thing. Xbox needs to decide if they are. Console or a service. I mean think about this- you could hypothetically sell more copies of Ori or Cuphead on Switch opposed to your own box. PC is in its own space to me so i didnt use that example. Just the main 3 consoles. Are you Live/gamepass on whoever's console or are you a console? Seems they gotta pick because doing both isnt exactly lighting it up
There is a typo Sam it should be
We Have a Plan That Can't Win
Latest leaks have PS5 $100 cheaper than Xbox Sex....
@JohnnyShoulder aren’t MS yet to announce a potential lower spec Xbox that might be in line with the PS5s price? Or did I make that up?
This entire discussion will change as soon as 1st party and exclusives are shown.
@kyleforrester87 There's a chance they scrapped that project. We'll see. And if the X Series S is weaker than the PS5, it will be suicide to release it at the SAME price. It needs to be far cheaper.
@kyleforrester87 there have been rumours about a second Xbox but I wouldn't expect it anywhere near launch. Rumours put it around the Xbox One X level of GPU but with many of the CPU and other advantages of series X, probably aimed at the budget market for these things
Xbox are doing and saying all the right things but I’m still buying a PS5 at launch. A strong Xbox will make Sony up their game so really it’s a win win whichever console you buy first.
Xbox Series X Plan, by Phil Spencer
STEP 1:
No exclusives for at least a year
STEP 2:
To be decided later
Their early marketing game has been better so far. It'd take a lot to convince me to go with Microsoft, however, considering I'm not a fan of asymmetrical controllers, the XSeX won't have any actually exclusives for a year or two, their Japanese support will likely be limited, I prefer Sony's trophy system, and I'm already invested in Sony's ecosystem.
The marginal power differences between the two don't matter to me. Price, features, and exclusives will, however.
@kyleforrester87 It was rumoured, then scrapped, and then rumoured to be on again. 🤷♂️
@Matroska that's their main problem at the moment, say you thought Halo Infinite was the best launch game between the 2. You could still get it on PC anyway or pick up an Xbox One X which would be a lot cheaper by then
Phil Spencer, the smuggest face in gaming!
Xbox will definitely be closer to PS next gen obviously with power but exclusives as well.
Thing is I’m still annoyed at how they deserted proper gamers for casuals at the end of the 360 generation and focused on Kinect. Then the same BS with the terrible launch and policies with Xbone, not to mention a whole generation with very little exclusives.
I’m not going to support a company like that and will be more than happy with my PS5 and switch.
Microsoft of listen to their customers and learn from their mistakes last time and produced a machine that is better than Sony in the area that we are decisive last time. Sony have listened to developers moved on and focused on the new technology the SSD. Only time will tell whether Microsoft is the general fighting the last battle or Sony is being arrogant.
Didn't he say months ago that "PlayStation isn't our competition. Our competitors are Google and Amazon?"
That was obviously fear talking as now he says the opposite. This is why I never believe a word this smug fellow says.
The windbag farts out more bad smelling odours.
Xbox has hobbled itself by saying that all new games will be scalable across all Xbox platforms, including the lowest denominator, the One S.
PS5 will have exclusives that will not run on PS4.
It is this that will separate the platforms, as the games themselves will basically be the same as current gen, more Forza, more Gears, more Halo. Prettier graphics, greater resolution and more steadier FPS as they climb up the Xbox ladder, but there will be nothing ground breaking, just more of the same with promises of HDR added to old titles from the 360, while gamepasses barrel gets closer to the bottom.
I do believe the PS5 exclusives really have the potential to be groundbreaking, and I hope third parties use it as their lead platform so they too can produce amazing new experiences, rather then just more of the same.
@Matroska
I'm getting a flashback from 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'
"Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?"
Phil Spencer is beginning to come across like Baldrick these days.
@MedaXbot probably, I'm just commenting from behind my mountain of consoles
You gotta give it to the man, he has a certain charisma.
I mean name me one person in the world, that has made so many empty promises and underdelivered in so many things product related, and yet, most of the fanbase kisses the ground upon which that person walks?
@AdamNovice
He is very contradictory and hipocritical when you look at all the rubbish he's come out with over the years. Most can see through him but major Xbox fans see him as some kind of Messiah and jump to his defence when anyone points out his rubbish.
Hey, Sony? I see what you did there.... And i like it!
Cringe off!!
Of course on a Playstation site, these comments may not exactly go down well and I expect most here would buy the PS5 regardless as they are fans of Sony.
I think Phil Spencer has done a great job for MS and obviously is much more a gamer at heart than his predecessor. You can't hold Phil responsible for the 'mess' of the XB1 - the 'multi-purpose' media device instead of a 'gaming' centred device that also had multi-media capabilities. The mistakes they made were made by a different team. Its like blaming the governments for the mistakes made by previous governments - without getting deep into politics.
It doesn't matter to me in any case as I will own both the PS5 and Series X but I do think that MS has the 'edge' on hardware. We still need to see if their investment in Studio's will make them more competitive with Sony - its not just quantity but quality too.
They have a different approach this generation but as the majority of games release on both systems, they will be used as the metric for which console design is the better for gaming. Visuals (not 'just' resolution) and performance will no doubt be 'benchmarks' - as they ALWAYS have in gaming and no doubt if any has an advantage, fanboys will use that as ammo to fire against the fanboys of the other...
To me, it doesn't matter if MS games can be played on older gen hardware (for the first year or 2), PC's and even Mobiles via xCloud, what is important to me is that I can play them at their 'best' on a home console. Its the same reason I upgraded to PS4 Pro and XB1X - to play the 'same' games but on better hardware for improved visuals and performance. You won't get all the benefits (ray tracing, very fast load times, improved visuals and much improved frame rates) on an XB1S!!
Its understandable why Phil feels confident as the CPU and GPU are better and its these that 'run' games after all. I am looking forward to getting BOTH though and I think its great that MS do look to come out fighting this time and that can benefit gamers - even if you are just a Sony fanboy...
@Matroska
Trump card:
The Xbox SS
It's all a moot point since it's unlikely either console will sell particularly well given the economic depression we are on the verge of.
Note to Phil Spencer: I will NEVER EVER purchase an X-Box until you can deliver on exclusives. You could three times the firepower of the PS5, but unless you have quality games I don't give a rodent's posterior. Sorry, I will continue to play my PS and Switch until Microsoft gets its act right.
Microsoft can afford to lose money. But ultimately it is the games that will decide. I doubt the quality of games is consistently good if people can play on game pass. As for me, no matter what is it, I will only buy PS5 as I have digital library of over 300 PS4 games and never a fan of gear of war or forza.
Cant even beat ps3.haha.come on x box.dont make me laugh.word up son
Honestly PS5 and NeXtBoX should be postponed for a couple of years and just focus on one more wave of current generation releases since there are 100 million PS4 owners versus the maybe 1 million PS5 owners by the end of its first year on the market. There is no way that the PS5 will sell well at all during this economic turmoil and will likely fail to reach even Wii U numbers if Sony goes ahead and launches the console this year as planned.
Funny how MS is now considering on treating Sony as their main rival again even though they said their main competitors were Amazon and Google.
@MedaXbot what? Sony are doing plenty. As for Phil Spencer The man talks so much hot air I would not be surprised if he is on his last life at Microsoft.
@nookie_egg sure you did 🤭
@David187 never owned an xbox in my life. Was tempted with the one when Rise of the tomb raider was announced, as well as Cuphead and ori but they all came to steam so never went for it. For me personally, xbox are making all the right noise and coming out swinging this gen.
@BAMozzy I'm puzzled by how 1st party PS5 games can (or can't) leverage the data access speed and, with that, create "something" not doable on Series X. Of course if the game is Mortal Kombat it will not matter, there CPU and GPU are long (having both machines the about same RAM )… but there MAYBE some edge on the kind of design or improvements devs can get with twice the data access speed and how RAM is used etc. After watching/reading several game dev postmortems and gaining insight on how they try to overcome the streaming issues... I don't know, maybe there's something of and edge for Sony. But Series X is a beast, with also a super fast I/O system -maybe it's just OK and nothing more is needed-, in fact when I was reading the Series X reveal I was thinking "This is what we need for next gen..."
This is what happens every generation, the market leader rests on their laurels and underestimates the competition.
@nessisonett well, Series X is not a PC on a fridge case... In fact is an awesome piece of hard, with it's own custom I/O more or less the same way Sony does (although half the performance it seems). The form factor is really an issue? You place the console somewhere and that's it! It's not awful, and certainly it seems to cool properly the hard. As a PS4 owner I would loved a "stronger" PS5 but fact is Series X is just more powerful except for the I/O and maybe that's key for Sony. Time and games -above all- will tell.
I’m of the opinion that in business you don’t ‘win’ against someone else. You set your stall up with a decent product and a polite attitude to your customers, and you try to make more money than you spend.
If success is just about selling more than the other guy no matter what it costs you, you will eventually be out of business. And if you make a billion quid and the other guy makes a billion and one quid, why should you be judged as a loser?
Did you want a Xbox One X with more power then the PS Pro?
Were You happy with your Xbox One X?
If you did great You will want a Xbox series X for more power!
@nookie_egg I find that very odd without one game being shown or anything that you think MS is the go to console considering their dire output of games this gen. Glad when games are running then I will judge
https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OGC.f2aa8cf6ec8e4b4e9d304537fab06e2b&pid=Api&rurl=https%3a%2f%2fmedia.giphy.com%2fmedia%2fZcbqkfX8CE02A%2fgiphy.gif&ehk=fUtwYwqRj%2bQLdQric0W1nHaszaLRQzYcc8oC5Myokcg%3d
It’s going to be a tough one. I want both, but if I can only afford one this year then I don’t know what I’ll pick. Microsoft says that now until Sony comes out swinging with trailers for major first party games coming to the platform, while Xbox will still be catering to the Xbox One crowd when Series X releases. I say the only way Microsoft has a chance of starting off strong is if PS5 production gets hampered due to the virus and doesn’t release until next year, but even then, that’ll just make demand for PS5 go up more and Sony will catch up pretty quick when it does get released.
Games. Games. Games. How many times do we have to say it? It doesn’t matter how powerful your console is, if you don’t have the best exclusives - which Sony clearly does - it will lose. The only thing keeping Xbox competitive now and no doubt with Series X as well, is Gamepass.
At this point, Im too invested in a PS4 digital Library to swap over (hope Sony can sort out proper BC for PS5). I also really went off the Xbox brand after the 360, their attempt to block used games at the start of the current generation was bloomin' awful. If I didnt game on a Playstation, Id just get a PC.
PlayStation still has a few bullets it can fire, and in the end price will be a huge factor as always, but I will say the early messaging has been much better from Xbox. Aside from Gears and Forza Horizon I've barely played games on the Xbox One since the end of 2015 and I've always been much more of a PlayStation fan, yet right now Series X is looking like a much more enticing product than PS5. Sony needs to get its marketing act together, its not nearly as on-point as it was heading into this gen and there's no excuse for that. I stand by what I've been saying until I see otherwise. The guy who replaced Kaz Hirai has utterly no clue and giving the reins to Jim Ryan was beyond stupid.
@David187 I think they are certainly much more consumer friendly currently (let's face it they have to be with how far behind in sales they are), the play anywhere stuff is useful for when I'm dog walking, the "buy this version and get the next gen upgrade" system is good and if absolutely nothing else, game pass is a lot better value than anything on Sony side of things, and will allow me not only to play through newer titles but also the huge amount of stuff I have not experienced from previous generations. To me, they are doing everything right. I agree it is the games that matter, but if they play better on the sex than the Ps5, so be it. Obviously Ps5 will still be for hzd 2, Spider-Man 2, gow 2 etc etc.
MS has the console sure but will that get that players that's the question.
I can guess The Plan... it's a second low price SKU.
Not a good plan in my opinion.
It’s all about the games for me.
@MattSilverado Of course first Party Devs 'could' do something and maybe in the latter years of the generation, when more PC gamers are using SSD's with similar bandwidth speed make it more worthwhile for multi-platform devs to utilise it in a way that is significantly different to anything we have seen and that Xbox Series X could not do - even with compression and machine learning.
Its difficult to assess exactly what it could offer that we don't see now. Essentially, it could mean that everything you can see is streamed in so fast and as you turn around, its streaming in new data, swapping out the old data so you are always getting high quality assets and textures at great distances. We have seen great distances in games now but often, the assets and textures of more distant objects are not that high quality, they get swapped out for higher quality as you get closer.
Whether or not Series X, with its 'slower' data is at a disadvantage, we will have to see and they may have some way to offset that advantage - much like DLSS can offset the resolution difference. Maybe ise something like Machine Learning to use lower quality assets/textures that are streamed in and make them look much higher quality - and therefore offset that advantage.
The point I was making though is that games have always depended on CPU/GPU for the benchmarks that games are assessed on - the graphical presentation and frame rates. You cannot necessarily compare some Exclusive on Sony vs an Exclusive on MS because you have different Developers with different game engines, different API's and different vision so it will come down to the multi-platform games - the games on different systems BUT built by the same devs, same engine etc.
An exclusive dev can change the vision of the game to suit the hardware. For example, if a certain area is 'difficult' to run, they can literally change that area, maybe put a building to obstruct a view and thus make it easier for the GPU workload to get the performance they want. On multi-platform games, they are much less likely to change that area and more likely to reduce the Graphical settings - drop the resolution, reduce shadow quality etc to reduce the GPU workload on that system because it needs to be the same on ALL systems.
That's why its going to be very difficult I think to ascertain whether the SSD is an advantage in Sony's first party games and you won't know for sure whether the Series X 'could' run the game as designed, whether it would run better/worse.
Any perceived difference could just be down to different developer visions for their game. The reason its got 'X' or 'Y' is more down to developer choice than the difference in SSD.
I tried to keep 'Exclusives' out of the conversation for that reason. As we see with the XB1S, Gears 5 (whether you like the game/franchise or not) is a great looking game from a technical perspective and runs at a native 1080/30 yet we know multi-platform games struggle to reach those metrics. We saw the same with PS3 Exclusives too - looking and running much better than multi-platform games.
The only way we will be able to really assess which has an advantage or where any advantages may lie is to see how they compare when running the SAME games, built by the same devs etc. The Devs can claim that 'x' or 'y' allowed them to build the game they wanted in that way but you don't know if that game would still of worked on the other and what compromises may well be needed to get it to run. Like I said, the PS5 games 'could' run on Series X but may have to use lower quality assets/textures for more distant objects to reduce the amount of bandwidth needed to stream in that data. Unless you actually get that game on the Series X, you cannot conclusively say that its a game changer - especially if all multi-platform games look and/or run better on the other system (not saying they will of course)
Again to use the PS3 as an example, some may say the Cell processor (despite only have 1 general core compared to 360's 3) was superior and the first party games were 'proof' of that - it didn't help for the majority of multi-platform games.
You can only really assess the situation in hindsight too so we will have to wait to see what devs create and whether the difference in SSD's have more impact in the actual design of games. Its still a massive jump up for both consoles - like the CPU/GPU is on PS5 too....
Has Ms got the console? Reading a few in depth blogs, they are not sure thats the case, lots of talk of major bottlenecks on Ms, Sony Ssd being revolutionary and new 3d sound being a game changer, then add developers in Sonys portfolio, big job for Ms. I think theres still some info from Sony we don't know, Cerny talk was for actual people in the game industry after all, Microsoft has blew their load 😂
So they keep banging the drum about backwards compatibility... but do they have a back-catalogue worth playing?
Microsoft have lost ALL Gen's so far so good luck with next Gen to Even when they had the whole internet on their side SONY still managed to out sell the Xbox 360 in the end and have better Exclusives in the end to + PLEASE Gamers DON'T trust Microsoft because they tried to DRM their Loyal Fans at the beginning of this Gen.
The Xbox looks great no doubt, and as a Sony fan, I've got to say it burnt a little when I heard the teraflops number. However, the longer I look at it, the teraflops difference isn't really so huge, both machines are beasts and will easy give us 4k 60. Also, the more I understand about the potential advantages of the PS5 SSD, I'm actually pretty excited for it. I played through God of War on "Give me God of War" difficulty. I'm not a great gamer, so some battles took me up to 30 attempts...lol. Instant respawn after death will be like gold for me. Another thing, probably more important, is the possibility that the SSD will reduce the reliance on the GPU and CPU. The Xbox has a lot of power, but possibly, the PS5 just won't need that much power. We'll know soon enough!
@BAMozzy yes, of course on multi plat Series X has the edge (I think in all but loading times), we need to wait and see how both platforms perform... that's the fun part.
@nookie_eg Think maybe Xbox is best if you prefer playing old games from the orginal xbox & 360. If you play on steam though do you need a Xbox? The game pass works on PC? So does every Xbox game. But Like I say the consoles will do the talking in the wild you will know then if you made right choice.
Games library selection and BC are the most important aspect for me, not the gigantic specs and power.
I'm sure PS5 will have more appealing games selection than Xbox series X.
If PS5 games also supported by Limited Run Games / Strictly Limited Games / any publisher from digital to physical games, PS5 will win. Physical collectors will choose the games on PS5 version than Xbox series X version that have NO physical release.
@Nyne11Tyme Phil has made it clear before that player count (subscriptions) is what matters to him, so he started taking Xbox 3rd party. Now he's backpedalling because that didn't get him the traction he wanted originally. The proof is in his recent interview where he says he's tired of hearing about whether this game or that one is coming to Switch. Xbox Live and Gamepass were supposed to at one point too, and honestly, Xbox is best as a service while being a terrible place to play games. He doesn't have a plan, they still have zero exclusives, something that has hurt them since 2015. The Series X has no incentives for upgrading aside from playing X360 in ultra shiny mode. As a gamer who owns all consoles, my Xbox gets used about once every 4 months. I buy games for the consoles they 'fit', but I don't buy games on Xbox to justify its existence. When my PS4 and Switch have 3x the unique library when compared to Xbox, I'll continue buying for those platforms to bolster their library. Why wouldn't you?
Next gen will be a repeat of the current gen where MS flops around again like a fish out of water while Sony and Nintendo continue to supply gamers with the only thing that matters; Games.
It's only a problem for Sony when sites like this repeat the same tired nonsense that terflops actually mean anything in terms of performance. You will not find one developer who will say tflops mean anything. Second of all 52 compute units at 1.8 Ghz is virtually indentical to 36 compute units at 2.23 Ghz save for a few percentage points. With all the extra silicon to remove bottlenecks on the Ps5 as well as the revolutionary ssd/IO throughput could give the Ps5 the performance edge. As we all know it is about the games. And Sony's Worldwide Studios absolutely destroys Microsofts.
Lolz. Everyone knows XBox will finish last. That's just how it is.
"It’s likely that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will cost the same, and considering Sony’s system has a disadvantage in teraflops, this could become a marketing headache for the Japanese giant to navigate."
Well Nintendo is the underdog now and will be even further behind once the XBox Series X and PS5 launch. That hasn't hindered their continued success. I feel this is a premature statement based upon pure speculation and only one side of the entire picture which is far from being completed yet. Lets see what happens when these consoles finally launch. We may find that with the difference in business strategies the two companies may end up complimenting each other rather than competing. Also the gamer lovers and fans will most likely end of up getting both.
@Anti-Matter Who said Series X won't have Physical Releases? It has a 4k Bluray drive and the expectation is for Physical releases. The advantage of Digital purchase though is that you could also play your games on PC and mobile via xCloud but nobody has said games will NOT be getting Physical releases.
@MattSilverado I am looking forward to BOTH. They are both a big leap up from my Pro and X. The most likely advantage for PS5 does seem to be loading times (in multi-platform games) but again that could be negated by different approaches. Sony, for example could have 'higher' quality textures on more distant objects but MS have higher resolutions, higher graphical settings and/or more rays having many more shaders they could allocate for ray tracing.
With things like VRS and DLSS, let alone the methods we have seen this gen to create the look of higher resolutions, these differences could be hard to spot - even when side by side. Having seen DF's breakdown of DLSS on Wolfenstein, 1080p DLSS looked as good as native 4k - perhaps cleaner/sharper too when zoomed in at 200%. Any advantages, from 'either' console could be negated by clever workarounds that make it incredibly difficult to spot - even when zoomed in and side by side, let alone when actually engrossed in playing.
This gen, it was incredibly obvious by the visuals (and often the performance too) which console was which - from the XB1S to PS4 to PS4 Pro to XB1X. You could clearly see how much more blurry the XB1S was compared to the PS4 because of that resolution gap but next gen, even if there is a gap, it may well be incredibly difficult to see when looking at a still, let alone the game in motion but you know that some fanboys will still use any metric to try and get 1-up on the other group of fanboys.
@BAMozzy yes, that's my take also. There's a lot we don't know from Sony's side also, like VRS... it should be there, right? Anyway, going for multiplatform games XSX is a no brainer, even for PC gamers... price/performance will be awesome. Here were I live things (like consoles and stuff) are really expensive so having both consoles is not much of an option.
One thing I though it would be missing from next gen is RayTracing, yet there it is... and XSX seems to have a nice advantage there, although we have yet to see how/what devs can do with the hardware implementation etc. Then you have things like World Of Tanks shadow RT implementation done on the CPU (via Intel's Embree), really nice... if there are some spare CPU cores on the consoles, who knows...
@BAMozzy
I mean the digital only games that goes physical.
PS4 have a lot of digital games get physical release by LRG / SLG / eastsoftasia / etc while Xbox One have Nothing (their digital only games are still being digital with No physical release).
I play physical games, not digital games.
Not interesting with XCloud, Digital games at all.
#physicalgamesrules 🤟
Hate to say it to Phil and MS but their "marketing" so far doesn't even matter. Only us gaming nerds are paying attention right now. 99% of people don't even know these consoles are coming out or what a Tflop is. I brought the PS5 and Series X argument up at work the other day with a group of guys I game with, none of them had any clue either system had been announced.
@BAMozzy You have nailed how this next gen will be. Both consoles are going to hit the 4k 60fps mark fairly easy, the rest of the stuff will just be icing on the cake. Even if the series x or PS5 can hit 4k 120fps, how many of us have tvs that will display it? Hardly any, I have 2 higher end tvs only 2 years old and they only do 1080p 120fps, no way I'm playing on my monitor... If there is a little better ray tracing on series x, the only way we will actually know is by watching digital foundry break it down in ways we will never notice. Series X also won't have any "exclusive" games for it, you can keep using your one x, no need to upgrade immediately. Sony will most likely dominate this gen too. Maybe not here in the US, probably be close to 50/50 but everywhere else it will.
They are both going to make an absolute killing on you lot.
I do wish you would all open your eyes. It would make the whole process a lot faster and a lot less wasteful... See you in cloud gaming.. hmm.. about 2021 Summer I'd say. We'll be happy to show you around then 👍
@Eldawso Just God of War is enough to make PS5 the console I buy.
@Real_Obsi yeah that way when my internet is down, I can't play games at all. Sounds awesome....
I might take my time this gen and wait until both consoles get plenty of reviews, true RRP prices of consoles, games, subscription costs and peripherals. Wait until at least 2-3 exclusives with 90% plus scores within 12 months. Until both consoles are physically on the street I'm not gonna be an early adaptor and risk my hard earned corona-cash safety net.
I only got swept along once to get a Xbox, I will never again do that. For me the company seem to always give off the wrong vibe of arrogance, hyper bowl and excel in putting the boot into other company’s. This guy Spenser gives off this same old vibe and it just turns me away. I like Playstation because they are more humble and give us new games that wouldn’t have ever been considered on Xbox because of there being no profit in them. Now where did I leave my wet fish to slap this mans face
In the end it's always be the games, and this generations sony got all the (10M selling) games 😃
While their box seems impressive sony still got all the advantage in the form of games, all their 10M selling games will get a sequels on ps5 that will attract casual gamers to ps5 while nearly all microsoft games this gen are declining in popularity/not selling as much.
@nessisonett There's really high probability that sony will wins agains microsoft in exclusive games. Microsoft ninja theory just released an avarage online only games that nearly everyone forget, their next games is still a long way, obsidian next games is another online only 4 player games like ninja theory (it seems microsoft really like online only multiplayer titles). Microsoft can buy games studios but their track record is not good (bungie out, lions head closed, rare died creatively, etc).
I do hope microsoft do better compared to this gen, I rather have 2 strong console rather than 1 good 1 bad console like this gen.
@Mjonk2pc Again though, its not just about the ability to play games on older systems. I could play ALL my PS4 or XB1 games on the base consoles BUT I upgraded to the Pro and X to get the best looking, best playing versions of games. Same reason People choose to upgrade their PC's to get better gaming experiences.
I don't want to be playing games at sub-HD level, up to 30fps, minute long loading times etc etc - I want to play games at their 'best' on console. I don't want to game on PC either. Its not 'just' about being able to play a game on a 7 yr old hardware with blurry visuals and struggling to hold 30fps. If you are 'happy' to play games like that, just because they are available, that's up to you but I upgrade to play games at their best with all the advantages new hardware offers.
The vast majority of games released in the first couple of years are on older generation consoles. The PS3 was still getting games like CoD and Fifa several years after the PS4 released. CoD and Fifa are also the BIGGEST selling games on PS4. If all the exclusives games are just SP, then you can wait a couple of years to buy a PS5 and play the vast majority of games on your PS4 - no need to buy a PS5 for the 'few' exclusives that interest you when everything else will be on PS4
Of course you want to get the PS5 because all those multi generation games will look, run, load etc much better on PS5 and who wants to play games that don't hold 1080/30 consistently, dynamically dropping below that standard to try and be more stable, waiting for a minute or so to load up, graphic settings set to medium at best etc when they could be playing on PS5 with much ray traced, high quality visuals and a minimum of 60fps.
A lot of TV's, unless you bought one with HDMI2.1, won't handle 4k at over 60 fps BUT the game can run at 4k 120, you still get the feeling and input lag of 120fps but the video out is limited to 60fps. It essentially drops a frame - doesn't send it to the TV so you get a 60fps visual but 120 fps gaming. That's handled by the 'video' section of the console - its similar to the Video section handling the upscaling to 4k or supersampling down to 1080p on the Pro - its NOT the GPU as that's running the game at whatever resolution it can and leaving the video section (usually where the HDMI controller is mounted or connected to) to upscale/supersample to output at the resolution you have set in consoles settings.
Like I said, I will buy the Series X to play games at their best on console and couldn't care less if someone on their XB1S can also play a version that looks and plays mediocre (at best). Its all about getting the 'best' experience on a Console because I don't want a PC for gaming!
@BAMozzy hopefully they can reduce screen tearing then.
@BAMozzy Honestly, if you told me that 10-13 years ago i would totally agree with you.
But looking back at the past 7 years, especially the first 4 years the graphical gap between all platforms (be it Xbox,Playstation or PC) has really gotten smaller in comparison to previous gens (besides 60 fps that will likely change next gen) to the point that for a lot of mutliplat games, people noticed little to no differences (yes even watching the uncompressed video comparisons).
That gap will even get smaller next gen.But there is one undeniable advantage PC gaming has for me, it's modding and THAT will never be the main thing on consoles. Granted most of the modding is revolved around Bugthesda games, still there is fair share of them for other multiplats to aknowledge them.
And one undeniable advantage console gaming (or more specifically Playstation has) has is exclusives, and if the rumors are true that all of those will come to PC eventually, i changed my mind from buying the PS5 day one to maybe in 2-3 years to most likely will not be buying it and instead invest those 400$-500$ into my upgrading my PC.
My only regret is ''losing'' my Playstation library, cuz i doubt my PS4 Pro will last forever...
@David187 I don't like to play on pc, I much prefer console. Also, in order for me to upgrade my old pc (i7 2.8ghz 970gtx) it would cost me a hell of a lot more to get a rig as powerful as the xbox (not forgetting monitor upgrade and all the rest of the stuff) , so it makes sense from a price point of view also. I'm eventually be getting both of them but the x first.
@DominatorV93 I'm in the same boat this time round, I'm svaing for my pc upgrade because I feel my 2600k rig is starting to see it's end of life for new games. I always wait for consoles 1 year or 2 before purchase but it might be 3 for me because so have plenty of PS4 games to get me through the next couple of years. And the money saved I'd rather upgrade now because again I love modding my games and I've been guaranteed 60fps for years but I still buy consoles for exclusives but this time it will be even later
@Nakatomi_Uk Tell you the truth this might be the first generation of Playstation i actually skip. I don't know, we shall see how it plays out.I will keep an eye on Sony/Playstation for the next 3 years and see what they have planned and what they have to offer.
Until then i will enjoy this last year with great games, like Ghost Of Tsushima and TLOU2. It will be a proper farewell to console gaming for me (whether or not it is temporary will depend on mentioned things).
"When we finally saw the public disclosure [of the PS5], I felt even better about the choices we made on our platform. I expected that I would."
xbox have already won, sony f**ked up big time when they didnt do full bc with ps2 and ps3 games. all they talk about is that ssd that will not be ready to buy before one year after release. its gonna cost a fortune at release and very few will buy it since its gonna cost half the price of the ps5. so people are gonna be stuck with the internal 700gb (after system updates takes what it need) ssd for games on the ps5. and we know that ps5 games will be over 100gb each, thats the norm. no one cares about loading games in seconds when its good enough to load a game in 1 or 2 minutes, people care about storage space, bc and noise. when it comes to noise sony praised mark cerny for the ps4 design, and what did we get? jet engine noise deluxe when games started to push the ps4 to the limit. the new xbox was designed around to avoid noise and being all about power, and they have shown the whole xbox in pieces for all to see. sony on the other hand have not shown a thing, and all talk is about this fast ssd, it says a lot about the ps5, its gonna be a rushed system with a lot of fails, if its gonna be released this year.
@TheBuzz April 1st was 3 days ago dude.
Sorry, but until Xbox bring our software that innovates they'll always be behind. Sony have pushed the envelope this gen unquestionably.
Until MS births an IP that creates the impact of Horizon Zero Dawn or crafts an experience as complete as God of War they'll always just be the CODbox.
@harchibald 👏 well said. Humble is and accurate approximation of what Sony are trying to do. Trying to give us new horizons and experiences not possible.
Tell me this if m$ is so invested in their xbox division why was that division up for sale not so long ago. I'm sure of the money was right it still would be!
Idk. It's weird. I read many comments about how SeX is soooooo much more powerful with less than 2tflops difference and dont realise they screwed up big time with the SSD speed and proprietary upgrade.
If it was the opposite and Sony went with a Vita like situation, everyone would be claiming ps5 is doomed no matter how many flops it has.
For that matter there was an article here a few months ago about GT aiming for incredible framerate (was it 120fps or even more) and guess what? All the comment were downplaying and laughing how most TV cant do more than 60fps....🤔
People really think ps5 wont be able to do 4k 60fps while xbox 1x already does supposedly 'true' 4k?
M$ have shown nothing except a 12 teroflop gaming rig. PS5 seems to be the smarter machine with it's unique cooling system and custom SSD, plus Sony has a amazing record of AAA exclusives. M$ haven't made a decent game this generation, that is actually a fact.
At the end of the day it'll be down to games and possible brand.
I always trust my instincts and I don't see M$ leading the way in the next generation of gaming, why would they? They will possibly come last after Nintendo, "again".
@JJ2 I admit even i was sceptical about GT running 120 fps, but if anyone can pull it off it's definately Sony.
Does it involve games? Does it involve VR? Does it involve taking risks in ideas and IPs to bring gamers something different?
The XB1X had around a 2 teraflop lead over the Pro as well.. but the lack of anything unique to play on it meant that it just smoothed things out a little more over the Pro for multiplat games. But oh man.. those Sony exclusives really gave me what I want.
Feels like MS is going into next gen with the same Pro vs. 1X baseline but the games are what make these things chooseable.
@carlos82 well they did say they're going to get a big crouch down for a big jump
The only reason MS are more vocal is because they have another crap year on xb1. While MS is making all these promises (oh how their good at that!), Sony is still delivering. This year besides some good multiplats ps4 fans can enjoy Dreams, granblue fantasy versus, mlb20, nioh 2, yakuza like a dragon, ff7, persona, granblue fantasy Relink, TLOU2, ghost of tsushima and probably more that i cant think of. It was already confirmed 2 years ago that most Sony devs already moved in to make ps5 games. I don't blame MS for revealing series x so early because their actions are empty until next gen. But honestly what next gen gameplay did they show us?
This site has made this article to stir the pot this type of behaviour is on Eurogamer daily looks like they want it here now as well to go with The Xbox Ads In the corner 🤯 sorry guys but you are dragging this site down it is sad
@nookie_egg PS now Xbox never i knew i would say that. 😆
