PS5 Console Revealed, Standard and Digital Only Edition

Looks great and looks unique.

It kinda looks like a router, but I like it. My PS4 pro has always been vertical, so that's how I'd have this anyway.
Big fan of the all-digital version. I've bought zero physical games this entire gen. Hopefully it's a bit cheaper than the one with the drive, and I can add a bit to the difference to get an expansion.

A bit bulky but still impressive. Comparing the the size of the drive slot, the console seems kinda big overall.

I was worried that after the beautifully minimalist geometry of the PS4, Sony would pull a PS3 and go for gaudy curves again... and they outdid my worst fears with this monstrosity.

Like, this industrial design actually looks so over-the-top bad that it dampened my interest in Horizon Forbidden West.

It'll probably grow on me as time goes on, or when I get it in my hands.

I think it looks dumb. The white colour fits my entertainment center but wish they’d kept it simple. Looks like one of those concept cars that never become reality because nobody wants something so awkwardly ‘futuristic’,

It would probably look okay if it was all black, as it is it just looks like Astro Bot or Gizmoduck. While all those different shapes and forms looks great on paper, keeping this thing clean will be hell. Hope they’ll release a simpler design.

I found myself buying physical less and less this gen.

Give me the feature to sell on my ps5 games to other peoples accounts for some store credit and this is the version im getting.

At first it took me off guard but i now love it. I thought it was going to be huge and bulky like the Xbox X but its not. Im still not sure how they managed to get it so thin.

That digital only version will need to be considerably cheaper for me to consider getting it, since it cuts off the possibility of buying used games.

I don't know about you, but I look at the screen while playing.

I think it looks amazing it's so different from people's expectations were I think a lot of us was expecting another black console. Gray for PS1 black for the 2, 3 and 4 so they changed it and spices things up a little at least this was an event worth watching. And the cost to Sony would have been nothing Horizon 2 looks fantastic and the new Spiderman is that 2 or a filler before 2???

I predict the disc drive version £550 but disc less version £450, it's going to be bigger it's for a high end AMD Zen 2 chip inside with a Navi GPU and the SSD I'm interested in how it cools it's self and how that works..

Can it be opened up to be cleaned out I assume the SSD internal is you can't upgrade it because it's unique for the system like the system won't work if you say upgrade it to 2TB

Just get a black blanket and cover it if it bugs you guys enough XD, I always put on the floor so I don't notice it much

499 diskless. 599 with disk. That would suck. luckily I just pulled this from thin air.
I like the design. I will put it horizontal of course but it looks way better than a stupid rectangle box.

Quick calculation tells me that, if the controller is the same size, the PS5 is almost 40cm high in the stand.
EDIT: if drive slot is 12cm (as PS4) console is 38cm high in stand.

I'm hoping the design language gets toned down for the rev.2 units sometime in 2021, because I really don't want to have to wait until the compact version redesign or the PS5 Pro to not have this wavy concept car parked under my TV.

I like it even though it looks like someone's tried to wrap a present with white wrapping paper only to realise they don't quite have a large enough piece. But very futuristic and daring unlike a the XBSX which just looks like one of those big black blocks you get on some power supply cables.

I'm somewhere between "Love it" and "Hmmm". Once I've painted everything in my house white to match, I should be sorted

@ankehuber I'm glad I saw this because I was wondering the exact same thing!!! Glad they likely have a horizontal mounting solution. I hope the cooling solution is just as good sitting this way though. Thanks for that!!

Really surprised by the comments that the digital version will be cheaper. It will most definitely be the more expensive one as it will require a bigger HDD right off the bat. And that does not come cheap.

Actually, i don't hate the design. But, i still hate the color scheme. White doesnt go with black and vice-versa. It looks ugly on the console and the controller.

With that said, i'd like to see pricing and HDD sizes/versions if there are any.
I'm going with the drive version. No reason to limit myself. The digital version will undoubtly lead to storage problems. I will pass on that. I'd rather have my physical games there for when i need them than risk them being gone forever at any time.

The console itself is as ugly as it gets. I didn't think Xbox Series X could be matched in terms of lame but Sony pulled it off. Hopefully there will be an all black color scheme, white can get scuffed up too easily.

I'm going to be interested in the pricing. If the all-digital is $100 less than the standard I might just go that route. I'll always prefer physical media but discs are nothing more than a license now anyway, some of them have no trade value at all because of how certain games are handled by the devs.

It's fine, it's different. I just hope those edges sticking out don't just break off by some minimal pressure or people are gonna get paranoid.

I bet retailers are overjoyed with the prospect of selling a digital version. Or not.

And seeing it took me 20 hours to download the day one patch of Arkham Knight on my cruddy Internet, the prospect of downloading entire higher definition games is even less appealing.

I'd really like a price. I'm sold between Oddworld, Ratchet, Spider-Man, Resident Evil VIII and Ghostwire...IF the price is $500, maximum, but rumors i'm hearing aren't giving me much hope.

@MrGawain It will be interesting to see how the 2 versions sell and which regions they sell in. I'm in Canada, and like the US, internet coverage varies in rural areas and can often be quite slow. There will be a cost difference between the 2 as well. I'm getting a disc version of course, but it will be interesting to see where these things get picked up.

Surely it sits horizontal as well as vertical, that has been the design choice since the PS2. I'm sure in the reveal they showed it briefly horizontal zero down.

I don't love the design, I wouldn't even say that I like it but it's not that big of a deal to me. The color scheme on the other hand I really don't like, hopefully there will be other options that aren't just limited to special releases that coincide with the launch of a video game, though I doubt very much that will be the case.

@Loftimus that was the first thing i noticed about the console plenty of air vents, hopefully this time around there will be no overheating issues like the og ps3 had.

Xbox 360 with a black belt. It looks better without the disc drive, the designers have made it look like a disc drive is an inconvenience

Hi there Playstation fans. I actualy realy like the design. It´s sleek, modern, futuristic even. Dual color scheme just like the controller. But mine is gonna be laid horizontally. And with disc because I still prefer physical media. Great reveal. Cheers and happy gaming to us all.

I only have one disc, rdr2, and that was because it was a gift. I get all my games online during sales. I'm not a day one or preorder buyer of games. So I'm good with a digital version.

@Netret0120 That will never happen. If you want anything like that or there not be a monopoly on pricing you'll the standard edition that plays physical discs.

It's so different I think even non gamers will know they are looking at a games console when they see that alongside someones TV. I really like it.

@Nem I too will go for the disc version, you can play ultra blu-ray but really aside from copying it's only used for the rights management/licence. The disc installs the full game to the HDD so I will be interested to see what expansions they offer. Sony are not going to make an SSD with superior I/O to then rely on optical disc read speeds.

This is suprising, I though it's microsoft that'll have discless console right at the beginning of this gen lol. The design is great although maybe it's too tall for my tv cabinet, it looks like futuristic router, which remind me of that playstation ps4 router video lol.

I want the disc version if the price difference isn't too great (max $100), more than $100 I'll take the digital version, and buy most digital games discounted a couple of month later. I rarely buy disc on ps4, especially ps4 exclusive since I rarely want to sell them.

Beautiful looking piece of modern Art. Not another square box. I have held out a a 4K blu-ray player because if PS5 knowing I would get one. Vertical has a smaller footprint. The PS4 stand is very stable for Seven years it has never got knocked over.

I want to know what they have done different this time with the fan and eradicating the noise as its similar in size to ps4 pro and thats loud? It looks great and funny enough i have already said many times i would like a launch white console so I guess my wishes were heard silently.
I would like to add that it was a shame that no price, release date and to be honest they could have at least told us if we had options on ssd choices but the two versions of the cknsole is a welcome but psychical is a day one for me.

The disc drive looks grafted on! I wish the ps5 looked like the digital version with a better integrated drive. The digital model is not for me as I have 85 ps4 discs I want to play boosted on my ps5. And lets be honest they need a black version as an option

@Speedy-R Hmm... not sure you understood what i meant. Even the ps4 doesnt read from the disc. It installs the thing on the system.
My point is that when you need storage space, you gotta delete some games. If i got the disc, i can re-install the games when i want to play them again. With the digital version i must re-download them. While the games aren't on my hdd, i run the risk of them being removed by the publishers or Sony at any time and lose them. Also, no resale value. So, yeah, i prefer not to take chances.

So Xbox's new console looks like a speaker and Sony's looks like a router. What happened to making consoles that look like consoles?

It certainly looks stylish and futuristic, least it’s not boring and ugly. It’s the design of the controller which is a big improvement to me, I’ve never liked the past controllers.

@AdamNovice The thing is we don’t know if Lockhart is going to be a digital-only console. It could very well still have a disc drive and still be cheaper than the digital-only PS5. And we have to assume that the digital-only PS5 will still have the same specs as the one with a disc drive and how much cheaper do you really think it’s going to be? Not much I bet, whereas Lockhart will have lower specs than the Series X (it will have even less teraflops than the Xbox One X) and I can see Lockhart or Series S as I’d like to think it’s going to be named, selling at least £100-£150 less than the Series X.

I personally think it looks fantastic. And i didn't/don't like the look of the dualsense. Very happy with that. Difficult to know how large it is without seeing it in a real world scenario though

Anyone who's been saying that the digital version will be cheaper isn't looking at the bigger picture. Sure the initial purchase will be cheaper (maybe) but the games sold digitally are always more expensive (unless you only buy games on sale)

In the long run it will be more expensive if you're the kind of person to buy games day one or within the first few months. Not only all of that but if we continue to support digital sales so heavily eventually it'll leave only the big shots like xbox, ps and Nintendo in control. As there will be no market for video game retailers. Potentially leaving us with some intensely pricey games.

Just being a pessimist and the fact that I love having a physical collection and seeing a digital only console strikes fear into my soul.

@Netret0120 Regardless whether it would be cheaper or not if you bought the physical version, the disc drive isn't getting in your way. You could simply not use it and it wouldn't affect you at all. If the online services for Playstation were down or you had no internet how would you buy your games? Your system would be nothing but a paperweight. I don't understand why anyone would buy this besides the possible cheaper cost.

@Nem I did misinterpret what you meant, I can see your point and I prefer physical media also, now if only the games that were on the disc didn't need massive patches. That's the danger, Publishers/Sony could pull the downloads/patches at any point.

@lacerz Imo, the disc version actually lots a lot better now seeing it on the horizontal, with the optical drive being underneath, I thought it sat above when I saw it vertical.

a blu-ray drive isn't worth an extra 100, the manufacturing cost is a fraction of that.. if the standard edition is more than 50 above the digital edition, i'll pass.. i'll just be resentful, and feel i'm getting ripped off. the fact the digital only edition is available right-off the bat suggests it's going to be pretty expensive, otherwise i don't think sony would feel the need to offer a cheaper alternative. i've purchased very little in the way of digital content, and that's not going to change anytime soon. so if the standard edition is stupidly more expensive, then it's the no-edition for me.

Hmm actually the PS5 is one huge console, the curves are there to hide its size, look at the controller, it’s four controllers high, thick and who knows how deep. Cool looks come at a price.

@finalstan - Why on earth would the all digital version need a bigger HDD than the one with an optical drive? Physical copies fully install to the HDD, they don't run off the disc or get magically smaller than a downloaded game. Install size is identical regardless.

I like black consoles, they blend into my entertainment center. But in the end I buy consoles for the games not their looks; and Sonys got the games I love.

All over it. Big fan. I was hoping it wouldn't be a huge Square brick and this is above and beyond what I was wanting. It clearly looks related to the PS4 but has enough unique features of it's own. Untimately it's the games that matter but that design, I love it.

Did they say anything about what is unique about the console? Obviously new games, more power, faster loading, etc. But is there anything distinct about it?

The one without the disc drive better be cheaper not just the console but the games as well otherwise there's no point in getting it over the standard version.

@Flaming_Kaiser You'd just be running into more issues compared to having a disc drive. Not to mention it would be more convenient. For example you have DVDs but you can't play them anywhere cause you don't have a DVD player or your PC doesn't work but oh wait my PS5 has a disc drive! I can watch it on there.

I hope the digital is is the same cost as the standard, but with a larger ssd installed.

Original PS4 design > PS4 Pro design. Here's hoping the PS5 Pro is better than this. Preferably in black without bits of plastic that could snap off if you catch the console while moving it.

Digital is out of question for me, I want to play my PS4 games and they are mostly physical. And +1 for plain black. I really dislike the flashy white. But end of the day it the games that count so I will be a day one buyer, even if I'm finding the console hardware under whelming.

Explain the difference between standard edition and Digital edition ?

Does that mean Drive is included for PS5 physical games, right ? Digital Edition is for digital downloadable only and no physical games are possible, right ?

@Shigurui Ah yes, you are right, forgot about that! And yet, something tells me there will be a difference in HDD sizes to differentiate the models even more (I guess I was trying to piece together the various rumours about two HDD sizes, one 800GB-something and the other one with 2TB - would make sense for the digital model to have the bigger drive to compensate for the lack of bluray, even if it will drive the price up).

I love it! Something completely different and innovative! I have every intent to leave it vertical standing next to the tv either on the floor or a small end table. It may be able to go horizontal however they are marketing it vertical a lot which makes me think it will perform more efficiently in a vertical position for cooling purposes. Me and the wif could careless if it matches the furniture lol! It looks awesome and plays badazz games! How can you not love it! Digital all the way baby!

I think it looks pretty cool...would be really neat if they released skin covers in the form of possibly Ratchet and Clank (as it almost resembles something from it). Honestly, can't wait to see how it will stack onto my shelf next to the other consoles and probably the next X-box as well. Honestly, this console looks great an I also think Microsoft's looks pretty interesting too. Will be neat to see what Nintendo's next console will look like too, since we know that will be coming up next to keep them up with the currents.
