The Witcher proved to be a gigantic success for Netflix, and with a second season confirmed for the future, that's not the only tale we'll be getting from the world inhabited by Geralt of Rivia. The streaming service has just announced The Witcher: Blood Origin, but this spin-off won't feature the famous monster slayer.
The tweet confirming the announcement states: "1200 years before Geralt of Rivia, the worlds of monsters, men and elves merged into one, and the first Witcher came to be. Announcing The Witcher: Blood Origin, a 6 part live-action The Witcher spin-off series from Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich." The former wrote one episode in the first Netflix season while Hissrich is the overall showrunner of The Witcher. This prequel appears to be in pretty safe hands.
Besides the tweet, details are extremely scarce. Given the popularity of the first full season though, we reckon Netflix will have another winner on its hands. Are you looking forward to this prequel series? Toss a coin to your Witcher in the comments below.

They're going to — ahem — bleed this dry, aren't they?
@ShogunRok I believe milking is the correct term; bovine defence force milk to be precise.
I think it’s fantastic news! The setting has so much opportunity!
The first Witchers were conceived due to the appearance of monsters after the conjunction of the spheres and the discovery of magic. They knew nothing about the monsters so this would be them just learning how to fight all these strange new creatures.
Could make for some excellent shows.
Why not, as long as they do a good job. I'd rather they manage to adapt the entirety of the books though. Just finished seasons of storms and I'd love to see that adapted.
Well as long the quality is there I don't mind!
Let's go! Another one
I actually once suggested such a spin-off and everyone laughed whilst saying anything else they (or CDPR) come up with is going to be better.
I guess we'll see. lol
As a lover of all things Witcher, I'll be eager to see it. I thought they did a great job with the first Witcher series. The period of the Conjunction of the Spheres could make for some really interesting stories.
I think they're going too heavy on this too early. Whilst The Witcher was hugely successful, it was due significantly to the popularity of the game series, and the lofty protagonist Geralt Of Rivia.
Creating a new series so early on after just one season to introduce the Netflix viewing public, to then announce a spin off series set 1200 years before the series most beloved period seems a huge gamble. Not sure it will be watched by as many as they may hope.
Declan wrote the Striga episode, which is arguably one of the best, so this is good news!
@Grindagger what worries me more is if they decide to axe after a few seasons, just like pretty much all their other shows at the mo. Lost in Space, Sabrina, Dark & and others are coming to close way too early. We'll be lucky if Netflix's Witcher gets to cover half of the books, let alone all of them.
Interested. Never played any of the games, but enjoyed the series.
I thought they pretty much butchered a few of the stories and some characters they were adapting from the books but the fight scenes in Blaviken and of Geralt versus the Striga were excellent.
how about pumping all the money into one great series Netflix!? this is why I'm starting to go off the model a little. I could only imagine how bad games would get on a model like this after a few years.
@sikthvash dark wasn't cancelled. It ended it's three season run.
@tameshiyaku maybe a bad example then, but there's been quite a few others that had either a restriction or been cut short in its prime, despite having both critical and audience acclaim.
@sikthvash From what I have heard, Sabrina's upcoming/final season should wrap up most loose ends, so I don't view that as a cancellation, more so the show's plot concluding.
Do I wish they had kept the show going? Sure, but at least the show won't get stale.
